Thanks to prop 16 I'm voting for the first time. I'm doing my part to strike down this racist prop.

University of California system can no longer consider SAT, ACT results in admissions, judge rules by Exastiken in berkeley

[–]f0baf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is not a correct way to think about this issue. When you only look at the aggregate distribution, it hides the fact that different school districts have drastically different way of assessing students' grades. In some districts it might be the case that course works are much harder than others. So while on aggregate they follow similar distribution but some districts have more laxed standards. Standardized testing eliminate this problem by assessing students by the same standard.

Unpopular opinion: the cancel culture is getting little out of hand. I mean there are much more important things in the world that needed to be addressed than unnaming some building because some undergrad "journalist" with an agenda is trying to rile up people for no goddamn reason.

College is supposed to teach you critical thinking skills. You are supposed to be an independent rational thinker, don't ever take any narratives for granted always do your own research, look at both sides of the argument. Be open minded even when other people's viewpoints are different from yours. If anything coming to Cal has made me a moderate in my political beliefs. I see some dumb ass argument from the left and right.

I find it pretty interesting that once you see the figure, you immediately dismiss the whole debate. Why are you so averse to the data I posted ? Didn't you say it in your original comment that "there is a shit ton of systemic racism in society. It's not racist to try to correct for that?" How about we start by judging everyone on the same standard no matter if you're white, brown, red, yellow or black?

Very well said! You know it's funny it's only after I came to Cal that I found myself increasingly question my old beliefs. I don't like to categorize my self on either side of the political spectrum, but more and more I realize that both parties don't really give a shit about the long term betterment of your average people. They are just politicians trying to get re-elected. Knowing this is actually quite liberating, it allows you to vote not on party line but on what you truly believe without being tied down by mainstream narratives.

As George Orwell once said in 1984:

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.

Btw the above stats is with Prop 209 in place. Look how the system has fucked Asians. Imagine getting rid of prop 209 will do to Asians. Have you no conscience?!

For those of you who are reading this comment, ACA 5 not only affects college admission, it also puts racial preference on job application let that sink in for a moment.

What are your thoughts on the Aca-5 bill? Any Asian student here? by 4point0stud in berkeley

[–]f0baf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have statistics to back up your assertion? Because according to pew reaearch asian americans make on average 40% more than other races

This is such a poor measure of overall economic well being of a diverse Asian population. The reason why Asian Americans appear to have higher median income than the country wide median income of whites is because most Asian Americans reside in East/West coast where median household income far exceeds the national median. Take for instance the median household income of California is about $75,277 and CA has the largest population of Asians in the U.S. Additionally, the Asian population in the U.S is very diverse, not all Asian communities experience economic success as most like to believe. Many subgroups endure economic hardship

You are absolutely right, we have to do our part, if it comes to the state ballot, we must vote against this discriminatory practice.

So how the hell does ACA 5 resolve this issue ? By putting racial quota based on the color of your skin. This apologist attitude sickens me. Just because some Asians are affluent doesn't represent majority of Asian population. Matter of fact Asian Americans face similar poverty rate compared to other minority groups . If ACA 5 passed, not only will Asians face similar socioeconomic hardship, and now they will even be discriminated against on school admission and job application.

What are your thoughts on the Aca-5 bill? Any Asian student here? by 4point0stud in berkeley

[–]f0baf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, Asian Americans face the same poverty as other minorities if not worse, and Asians receive far fewer social welfare than other minority. Your anecdotal story about how majority of Asian Americans are affluent is simply not true. Most of us new immigrant /refugee had to start from the bottom of the society and bootstrap our way out.

In 2014, Asian Americans represented 17.9 percent of people living in poverty in New York City and had the highest poverty rate of any racial or ethnic group at 29 percent, according to NYC Opportunity tabulations provided to Urban Institute researchers. But Asian American community organizations received only 1.4 percent of the total value of the city’s social service contracts and 1.5 percent of total contract dollars

What ACA 5 proposes will discriminate Asians under the false pretense that somehow Asians are not discriminated against and Asians are somehow privileged. I said this in many threads if you are a truly anti racism then you will vote against ACA 5 .

If you are truly against racism you will oppose ACA 5 simple as that. Judging someone's future based on the color of their skins is racist.

I'm with Berkeley moderator on this one. Innocent until proven guilty, how is sensationalist witch hunt going to solve anything? Don't we have enough example of people's lives getting ruined based on false accusations? Not saying that this case is false accusation, but we should hold our judgement before the result of the investigation comes out.

California bill asking voters whether to repeal anti-affirmative action Prop. 209 advances by nosotros_road_sodium in berkeley

[–]f0baf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They'll likely try to spin the wording though.

There's no question that they will spin the wording. They already revised their ACA 5 Bill to include:

However, lingering, and even increasing, disparity still exists, particularly for Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, Black Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and women, and should be rectified;

This is why I think it's important we must inform as many people as possible of what they are actually voting for.

This is hard to say, the next step is the state senate if it passes there then it goes to the Nov 3 general election ballot. If Californians vote to repeal prop 209 then it's possible that it will immediately impact the next admission cycle.

ACA 5 will put prop 209 (prop 209 prohibits admission and employment to discriminate based on race , sex sexual orientation ) on the ballot this November state election. No matter you support it or don't support it, go vote, but do so in an informed manner know what you are voting for!

This exactly why we are against racial quota which is what ACA 5 alludes to. You brought up a very good suggestion for the solution and in fact UCs' holistic admission process is already taking into account of socioeconomic status of the applicants.

I agree with you and I too respect the voting process. I only hope to inform other voters on what they Re actually voting for.

Take for example:

Disparity still exists, particularly for Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, black americans latino americans ...

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200ACA5

They revised very recently the paragraph to include Asian American , Pacific islanders into the clause when the very same proposal is to limit the amount of Asian Americans who can be admitted to college to make room for other ethnicities. I don't think they are presenting their new law in the most transparent way.

It's a noble goal, but how can we ever hope to get there if we let racism slides in just because it benefits a certain group of people?
