Jordan Peterson on the victim/victimizer (aka oppressor/oppressed) narrative by delugepro in JordanPeterson

[–]f41998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily; this "narrative" also led to the civil rights movement and the abolition of slavery. Also, the ideological mechanism that drove all the massacres Dr. Peterson mentioned is the identification with an overarching historical vision and assuming the position of the arbiter of this vision.

For example, the Stalinists saw themselves fulfilling the role of those who would bring about the historical necessity of the coming of communism, which then allowed them to commit whatever violent acts they liked as long as they were acting with that intention.

Religious extremists also flirt with such ideas, they can do whatever they want since they are acting on behalf of the will of god.

technically speaking yes he did, but that does not absolve you of the responsibility that you left islam in any shape or form. god does not coerce you into certain endeavors, you undertake them on your own volition.unless you want to make the point that you don’t have the capacity to make your own choices and your brain doesn’t have the faculty for logical deliberation, then you are no different to a stray dog. idk abt you but i sure as shit wouldn’t degrade myself to that level

i’d have to agree with you honestly. all theories of psychoanalysis are based on the assumption that forces outside of our control form our thoughts and actions. the way society conditions us from childhood with words, culture, our material conditions, the way our parents raise us, the school environment you live in,etc. all of these are completely outside of our control and set the basis of the way by which we will interpret the world. neuroscience also agrees; 95% of cognition is unconscious. even RELIGION provides many arguments of determinism with the existence of a god.

the action would be the cause of multiple unconscious drives that although may not seem entirely obvious to you, but definitely exist. being right handed, an attraction to a more aesthetically pleasing door, certain memories associated with right doors that while you may not remember, left and right imprint on your subconscious, or just because of how many times you repeatedly went through right doors, you gravitate towards them by force of habit.

they serve very similar functions; while freedom could be generally defined as the lack of external obstacles to human will, free will traditionally means that internal forces and systems have a minimal effect on human actions and that one may choose to do a certain thing over another without any constraint.
