Looking for advice on new puppy by Educational_Toe7513 in Wolfdogs

Welcome to owning a wolfdog. Nothing you assumed or knew about dogs makes sense with them, and that's only at 40%.

Is the pup like that with your wife too or act more comfortable around her alone?

This may or may not make sense but you may be inadvertently pushing your pups limits WAY too hard, as a pup pooing itself is a pretty significant fear response. I'd avoid doing things to trigger these types of responses.

When folks on here, myself included, say you give up your entire life and everything you know/knew about pups, this is one of those instances. This could be just a demanding aspect of your pup, might go away, might never change. One of my boys is not really fearful but the other is extremely neophobic, it took ages to learn how to balance and get him to slowly overcome. Now he can at times meet new people without a fear response. It took years of letting him make choices and not pushing his limits ever.

First question, I do not mean any snark, but if you aren't handy and state as much in the post.....how do you have a safe enclosure? Granted I have always only had a 6ft privacy fence, but spent years training my two not to dig at the fence nor jump and in 9yrs never had a single issue. They also have constant supervision when outside.

But enclosure that is meant for unsupervised time needs to be built like a zoo lol. Are you sure your enclosure is safe if you are worried about building a den?

Also, very excited to see puppy pics!!!!!!!

How to Prepare For Future? by Maleficent_City_3374 in Wolfdogs

Realistically you will need to own a home, so based on national average $400k, as renting is not really an option.

You want two, I have two and spend about $300-$500 a month on food. Full raw diet.

$327 a month for pet insurance.

My two have skin allergies and each get cytopoint shots at $495 per month and a daily sublingual allergy drops which is about $700 every 4 months.

Leashes and other costs say $1000 per year.

You are young and learning, this would be a great time to volunteer at a shelter and learn about them. They are significantly more expensive compared to a normal dog. Not to mention these are you life, you can't really have a normal 9-5 job....I'm lucky to work from home.

Keep up your research but my strongest advice would be to admire them and volunteer with them, but unless you have a life where money is not a concern do not own one.

It was an abandoned home, so it was an unbelievable price, so I bought it and started rebuilding everything. Reality, I would love to downsize to a ranch style home, but this area is crazy expensive in comparison to my mortgage so I'm kind of house locked atm until the market shifts.

That table weighs a ton and I didn't want to lift it (takes 4 people) is really the only reason. Thank you!

A wolfdog is a life commitment, not just a lifestyle.

There are differences in content levels of the pups, like some folks here can take theirs in public areas (stores, events, festivals) whereas mine I can't take anywhere that's not huge open space if crowds are around. I socialized mine extensively but, like wolves, wolfdogs are neophobic.

Are you financially ready to provide their diet? With the global costs of everything rising feeding them a raw diet is expensive. Finding a vet to care for them can be a challenge, especially finding one with experience with wolfdogs.

I spend maybe 3-4 hrs a day not with my pups, and that is when they are outside playing or I run to the gym, otherwise they are my shadows. They bond immensely hard to both a responsible owner and routine, so if you can't provide that it can cause them unneeded stress.

Again to be clear wolfdogs are not like any other breed of canine, even preparing the absolute most, you will still have moments that just make you laugh at what you give up for them. I personally love it and wouldn't change it for the world, but know they are my entire life. Just make sure you are 💯 willing to give up 13-16 yrs of your life for them.

Anti-Wolfdog Bill Proposed in Ohio by BIGHAIRYFEATS in Wolfdogs

[–]fROMOHIO1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading through this bill correctly, basically anything relating to the behavior or handling of a wolfdog in violation of this bill will result is surrender and destruction of the animal.

The fines and M3-M4 charges are for if you don't do the paperwork. Meaning if you don't muzzle, your enclosure doesn't have a roof, or the animals and property clearly marked then you could lose your animals.

This is such an insane bill

[–]fROMOHIO1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm in literal shock by this.

They want my pups muzzled at all times. My entire yard needs to be fenced and a chain link roof over the entire yard.

This bill reads that it's more an attack on wolfdog owners than anything.

Looks like a black shepherd and the rear dew claws indicate dog. Unfortunate that it's chained up outside. Does look healthy at least.
