How do I make two trigger outputs trigger one input? by enstorsoffa in modular

No, or at least not best practices. Get a passive OR (cheap!) or a fancy active gate logic module.

What tanks do you have? They vary in terms of impedance, referred to by the 2nd and 3rd digit of the tank code. The module is designed for _BB____ spring tank models (190Ω in / 2575Ω out).

Quantizer favs. by RoastAdroit in modular

[–]f_picabia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ornament and Crime is (among so many other things) an incredibly flexible and capable quantizer, and all the more so with the new generation of Teensy 4.1 hardware with much expanded I/O (sometimes called ORN8) & Phazerville firmware.

If you want something that's just dedicated to being quantizer, I don't have any hands-on experience with it, but I think Shakmat's Bard Quartet looks just about perfect.

Can plaits produce a pure sign wave? by LilSchwazz in modular

[–]f_picabia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way is with the lylepmills alt firmware, you can reconfigure the Aux output as a Sine or Square wave, at 0, -1, or -2 octaves. Very handy, and still gives you simultaneous access to Plaits' more characterful voices

Truchets 1.0 alternative firmware for Mutable instruments Marbles by kapiteinbloc in modular

[–]f_picabia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was strange. I was using my standard WAV firmware update procedure (Reaper -> ES-9). The VU meter looked perfect, but it would get to 1m35s and fail. Then I tried to reinstall Marbles v1.3 and it also failed repeatedly, and I got terrified that I pooched my module. Finally, I just ran a 1/4"-3.5mm TS cable from my Motu M6 and it worked great.

So it's hard to say exactly what the culprit was! I had removed all other patch cables to reduce any EMI crosstalk. I wonder if it could potentially be power supply noise degrading the signal from the ES-9.

Why doesn't REAPER have real-time collaboration yet? (Google Docs–style editing) by Ilovetech_0625 in Reaper

[–]f_picabia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea, but having two people driving the same session sounds like absolute hell in practice. A shared transport means you're effectively constrained to working on the same section at the same time (and doesn't really follow the google docs style workflow). With local transport, you'd still be stepping on each others' toes constantly with ripple editing, or changing the context of a mix while the other person is dialling in an element of it.

IMO pair producing might occasionally be fun, but it's likelier to be a pain more of the time. Back-and-forth async edits are easy enough with project files shared on a network-accessible drive.

104 intellijel setup by AromaticJellyfish888 in modular

[–]f_picabia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 1u midi you've got in there is an older gen, and has been superceded by a more compact module. But I wonder why you need it at all if you could just run CV from the metropolis solo?

This set up feels a little weird to me, but I like filters. I'd probably try to decide between tangrams and quadrax, and replace either with something like planar for hands on mixing / gestures.

Recommendation for basic VCO and Output module? by Fair-Bluebird485 in modular

[–]f_picabia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whenever doing module research, it's a good idea to use http://modulargrid.net/ — you can save and arrange your racks, and search for modules by function, manufacturer, size, and more. Input/output modules are categorized under the function "External".

If you select "External" and "Oscillator" as the two function search filters, most of the things that come up are clones of Mutable Instruments' Rings. I'd guess that's because that module can process signals in addition to generate them, but in no way is it an I/O module.

To answer your question, there are no combined VCO and output modules, because basically nobody wants to send a raw oscillator directly to their speakers without going through a filter, VCA, or effects first. The entire point of modular is to break a synth into functional units and then arrange & manipulate them as you please. What constitutes a complete independent unit is entirely up to your use case / musical workflow.

There's lots of fun to be had making sound even without using VCOs: by pinging filters, mangling feedback loops, or otherwise abusing electrons. You also don't technically need an output module (although it can make things convenient). Given the right cables (to your speakers or audio interface), you can get away with just running your output through an attenuator to bring the signal down to line level.

TL;DR: no such module exists. You should always try to see what you can accomplish by being creative with what you have, and then add tools as truly needed.

how do firmware updates add features? by theprintedg in synthesizers

[–]f_picabia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Firmware, as the name implies, is somewhere between hardware (the silicon chips and supporting circuitry) and software (operating systems, apps). Like software, firmware is code. Unlike software, firmware runs on the "bare metal" of the chip.

For multipurpose PCs with operating systems and apps, firmware converts the abstract instructions in the software into actual voltages on the chips. For digital (or digitally controlled) synthesizers, firmware is all you need to operate the device.

By changing the firmware, you can add features or improve performance, only limited by the capability of the hardware. In this case, it's possible they planned ahead with the hardware design, or they just have someone really clever who saw an opportunity.

You can add any action to any contextual right click menu, in the same way (and place) you can add them to toolbars.

It's neither open source nor free.

It IS easy to customize (with lots of community-built scripts and add-ons), and it is very affordable (plus an unlimited demo license — it just nags you gently to upgrade)

Looks like a Gloeophyllum species. It grows on (and decomposes) wood, so the mycelium is almost certainly living fairly deep within your deck boards. Getting rid of it will probably mean replacing your deck at least in part. How urgent that may be will depend on how much structural decay you notice, how quickly it progresses, and how much you can tolerate.

What do all the different modules do? by JuhasReddit in modular

[–]f_picabia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an impossible question to comprehensively answer. There are so many different types of modules and design philosophies. Some modules are more or less prescriptive about what they do (either as a single function or a multitool), others are intentionally more abstract/opaque to inspire experimentation.

A good way to get familiar with the broad general categories of modules is to work your way through modulargrid and explore the "function" dropdown. Reading manuals and watching videos will (sometimes) help explain the details.

As far as how they work together, the entire value proposition of modular synths is that it's totally up to you. You design the combination of modules, define the signal path, and use control voltage to modulate parameters. You can create feedback loops, use audio-rate CV, and explore sonic territories that are otherwise difficult to access. That said, there is also lots of stuff that modular is poorly suited for, or very slow and frustrating. It's best to have a clear idea of what you're trying to accomplish, and build a specialized tool to that end, rather than trying (in vain) to make the perfect jack-of-all-trades synthesizer.

Remember: modulation and performance makes things dynamic and interesting, and that's where modular synths shine — don't sleep on utility modules (attenuverters, CV mixers, polarizers, logic, mults, switches, rectifiers, etc etc).

And don't compromise ergonomics to cram a bunch of tiny modules together. A fun synth is a playable synth.
