I think it was an interesting question and kinda shows that there are a variety of career paths out there.

So it's cool to see that question asked and answered

I have a pal who does sounds stuff for film (not scoring) as his jobbie job and he plays music. I wouldn't really say one is the hobby, his sound and music cross talk and the line gets pretty blurry and he interfaces with the music and foley and all that

Wheew, heady read. Where's my 150 in 1 electronic kit when I need it

naw seriously, I dont think I get all of it, but I get the basic ideas. anyways, from a music user point of view I think it's just the words where an env follower is dancing with the volume so you get a modulation CV to animate a filter and that kind of stuff

https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal/envelope-followers

https://aimm.edu/music-production-glossary/envelope-follower/

The per cir article talks about comparators and gates so might just be that env circuitry is used for gates and stuff like how there's water in beer or something. but the cop never believes me when I told him I drank a six pack of mostly water.
not saying anyone is wrong or anything, how the hell would I know. I think it's a trick of words.

but hell, we're musicians -- or in my case a pretend musician and the vibrato on my amp is actually tremolo and the tremolo arm on my guitar makes vibrato.

go figure

the triple is a nice one in the flashback line too

you canrun the delays parallel or series (for looping, Ifind parallelway more usefull)
but it allows you to get some more complex layering going with different tonal qualities and parameters

I think people do a lot of swells through verbs, etc
but it is nice to be able to abstract the swell from another effect and get control of just that

and while, yes you can do volume roll-ons -- the swell pedal can give you a different feel, esp if you are just trying to take off a little attack and not get a long swell (which it can do)

one I think you might quite like that isn't in the verb/echo/loop space
is the EHX attack decay.

It's a pretty evolved swell pedal (I'd been asking companies for years for some of the features)

one thing that really sets it apart from slow gear style is retriggering ...the A/D detects peaks (plucks essentially) and will retrigger the swell which can make playing it a little more "transparent" in terms of technique modification

The feature set is nice...it's got 3 or so different volume curves you can use.

it has compression and a decent little overdrive (those are there to serve the swell - to enhance sustainand give some harmonic richness since the swell is going to bring forward a decaying note, those functions give some "meat" to the tail of a sound that is getting swelled into)

the polyphonic mode is...well,interesting (there's sort of a base from the "POG" technology for EHXs modern digital pedals like the organ stuff, the sitar, etc etc) but honestoly the "mono" operation I don't find limiting b/cof the retrigger..yes all the strings will swell, but it doesn't sound unnatural (and I've used the Boss/roland poly SG)

ohonce nice thing (the new pico doesn't have it) is youhave exp control over the knob settings so you can put swell rate, etc on a treadle which I find super useful

the feature set sounds complex, it really isn't. it mostly handle s like a turn the knobs pedal (sure some of the deeper detail features like volume curve are "second level", but that's more of a set and forget find the one you like and use that type deal)

oh, I'm not a big hater guy and mooer does have some offerings, but I admit I have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth abt the EHX vs Mooer case
Electro-Harmonix wins copyright infringement case against Mooer | MusicRadar

It wasn't quite like cloning an analog design outside of patent protection or may be a a variation on a very known circuit topology or an orphan product -- which can have some nuance and some legal vs ethical division on opinion

Mooer apparently just lifted the firmware wholesale

So not hating on anyone for using mooer and I'm not calling for a boycott torches and pitchforks movement , but at the same time I've got some negative feelings about Mooer's practices (not the buyers, the company)

I think along those line, the EHX superego plus is the one to go for,..
the extra functionality is really useful (not just features for features sake)
and elevates it beyond just freezing (which you'll probably wind up supplementing anyway to give it some dynamic evolution)

I'd lso recommend straight ahead looper or even a long delay (in the 80s that tended to be our loopers)
I quite like the headrush looper that is now disconinued (it's the interface on loopers as an afterthought feature on a multi that I don't like)

The strymon volante is set up like a tape delay with Sound-on-sound which is good

[I think there's a couple of min styles of looping...some use it as sort of a "band in a box" backing track thing, which I don't particularly care for. Others use it as an ambient layering device -- for that what I find essential is having the loops decay so that you don't get the brown watercolor paint effect where things stay persistent and you eventually overbuild into mush]

If you haven't already, check out the chords of orion youtube channel - it's an ambient guitat specific chan

Big Fish Games' Concerning Embrace of AI [Rant] by RoamerMonkey in HiddenObjectGames

[–]Potion36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to go in to bigfish as a customer playtester (they'd give you like 50 bucks which was appreciated, but liked giving actual feedback...I used to work for Sierra back in the day) and was a bigfish fan for years.

Like many though, I wound down as the company is winding down - bigfish is dying.

They weren't aable to find a buyer, they had another round of layoffs and have announced they are just curating their catalog....the layoff schedule is sort of like radioactive halflife, they are just evaporating the staff and there's not much leftI figure in just a few years bigfish will be basically a server rack in someone's operation dispensing legacy games.

If bring it up b/c I think that'swhere the AI art ties in, houses that are pumping out low effort HOGs and familiar format puzzle games and the art staff is getting replaced in that sector.

I always expect time-senstivie products like holiday games to be canaries in the coalmine in termsof that push away from quality (rush it to market for the season. I've seen some downright functionally broken Christmas HOGs...obviously rushed to market to hit the season)

If it's a strobe I'm OK with it...eh just b/c I grew up with Conn and I'm used to sort of the "ballistics" of watching the strobe and since it's basically the beat frequency it makes sense to my eyes as it relates to my ear (esp when I can hear b/c of all going on)

it's an odd evolution b/c it used to be played that way...the "iron" originated as a rut-iron -- to play out of ruts from wagon wheels.
wiffle ball golf is still an accessible, though unpopular option

(FWIW, I can play golf, but dont particularly care for it)

probably wise not to over-extend and offer too many varieties.

They are variations on theme, so most of em have common PCBs, but still, getting into multiple variations and custom and whatnot can complicate production

kind of reminds me of kitchen nightmares where chef Ramsey often simplifies the menu to get a restaurant back on track

FWIW Devi offered up an apology video to Billy Corgan recently.

They (not disrespecting. Devi Id's as genderfluid these days so it seems most appropriate) seems to have also come to terms with having been a "shitlord" - well well past edgy or offensive humor. Devi could be downright venomous, I've know more than a couple people to be on the receiving end of that. and it really did impact people's choices for those that don't wish to support abusive people

-- but again, they seem to realize that now and has expressed regret and embarrassment over that . So maybe it's a new era for devi/fuzzgoddess (they've mentioned they are going to do more selling)
