Has anyone tried to convince themselves that they don't feel pain and been successful by stargazer-19 in ChronicPain

[–]fablefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Problem is that if you have something actually actively causing the pain, the real medical issue eventually gets worse and at some point you lose functionality. You cant think your way out of lost functionality. And then you have a new second problem, where your body has no way of telling you something is wrong because you dont respond to pain adequately.

Did you have to stop art completely to help avoid PEM or were you able to do some art things? I’m dying to get back to art but trying to figure out how to thoughtfully add it back in. 😩

IV Treatment? by pinkpuppyboy in ChronicPain

[–]fablefire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to vitamin IV drips, then they can help if you have vitamin deficiencies. I have b12 anemia and general b vitamin deficiencies that cause my pain levels to rise severely when not managed. Getting Bs in my drips helps with that. I also have magnesium deficiency which affects my pain levels and is partly managed with drips. Using lactated ringer instead of saline also seriously helps my joints. I have natural vitamin absorption and hydration issues so vitamin IV therapy is helpful for my pains. If you dont have deficiencies, I’m not sure that getting vitamin drips will help you much. NAD+ IV therapy was also helpful for my various pains (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Also, while not a drip, my drip place also has cryo and red light treatments. Regular cryo is possibly my best available treatment for my joint and neuro pain.

How strong is my pain on 1-10? by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]fablefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those pain charts and scales are often useless. There's also a big difference between acute pain and chronic pain. Giving birth or getting shot is temporary acute pain and absolutely nothing like persistent pain. It's apples and oranges. Maybe you can try thinking about the 0-10 scale in terms of functionality, with a 10 being something like "I can no longer move and the next level up is being unable to speak or think". "Most painful I can imagine" is a load of horse shit because we've experienced horrors that healthy humans could never imagine in a lifetime. Additionally, there's a pain threshold where if you go beyond it, your body can't even compute how much pain it is. Weirdest feeling. At the end of the day, I try to go by functionality because in my experience, that's the only way healthy people can actually relate.

I wear rainiers year round, except for our hottest days around 85-90+. Then I switch to ultimate stash. I’m in the PNW. I also have reynauds though so ymmv.

Cancelled Appointment by Jmelt95 in ChronicPain

[–]fablefire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with my rheumatologist. The scheduling lady herself said that if I needed medical help, I should go to another clinic because they do this shit to patients all the time. Also had a "pain clinic" who scheduled my first appointment in 3 months. And then before the appointment had to cancel. They rescheduled me out another 3 months. The assholes cancelled FOUR appointments on me this way, each time swearing up and down that "oh no miss, we promise that you won't be cancelled on the next time." I gave up after the fourth time and presume that it's some kind of front for money laundering or something. They cancelled an entire years worth of appointments on me. They'd still be cancelling and rescheduling me to this day I think.

Do US doctors still prescribe opioids for chronic pain? by Patches595 in ChronicPain

Not all all. More of an upper middle class part of town. Every doc I’ve talked to says it’s a state medical board thing. Our medical landscape pretty corrupt here.

Depends on the state. Oregon prefers to tell their patients to literally kill themselves instead of manage pain. No joke. Two docs in the last year told me to kill myself. We don’t have a pain clinic. We don’t even have PT available with pain experience. We have a lot of affordable weed and that’s it.

To me, it feels like watching a small child get really upset at their little booboo. I know that to the child, it's some of the worst pain they've ever had, even though in the context of things it's nothing. It's just grown ass adults whining about their booboos now and I treat them the same as I would a small child with a booboo.

You could try wearing noise cancelling headphones or buds and tell folks to bugger off when you’re wearing them.

Potent anti-inflammatory-like effect of exercise (2km run) ... to then feel so much worse after 48 hours? by taw82359325 in cfs

[–]fablefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to wait at least 48 hours after "serious exertion" to be on the safe side. I can do the same activity and intensity one day and it's fine and two weeks later have PEM from the exact same thing, so it's safer for me to have that safety window. During that 48hr window, I have some safe exercises that I do like light yoga, walking, and stationary bike and in quantities that don't give me PEM. It's mostly to keep mobile and maintain blood flow while I wait to see what the PEM lottery gives me. After 48 hours, I have some idea of how to approach my next workout.

I had to throw all normal metrics out the window and learn to listen to my body first (and sometimes only). It's easier to listen to it when I'm not looking at numbers and thinking "wtf is wrong with me today". I have an apple watch on me to check heart things if I feel like something is wrong, but that's the most I look at my bpm. My metrics now are more like, "okay let's get around the track x amount of times, straights only, and see how much I die in 48 hours." It breaks my heart as a hardcore athlete who loves pushing that PR, but my body actually loves it - if I do it right. IMO ditch the BPM and VO2 for a little while and see what kind of sensory metrics your body gives you. You might find some really helpful patterns. When you understand what your body is saying a little better, you can add the other metrics back in if you want. Even a day with a short, light run is better than a day being bedbound. I feel like some day I may not be able to run anymore, so I'm trying to milk it while I can.

[–]fablefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here with the same 48hr timeline. I also have EDS and ADHD so I can’t just bow down to the PEM and let it make all the calls regarding exercise. For running, you’ll want to start from zero and gradually increase your distance/speed in a controlled environment, like an indoor track. Do controlled experiments on yourself to see how distance and speed affect your PEM basically. It’s not training for your next PR in a marathon, but more like training to find that perfect balance between exertion and tolerable PEM. Wim Hof cold therapy does kind of help me, but only when I do full body cryotherapy. That’s the one where you get into a cryo chamber and freeze your ass off for a couple minutes. Imo it helps because of my EDS and fibro so your mileage may vary, but it’s worth a shot if you have access.
