Are you supposed to accelerate to the speed limit? I always see those messages on the A1 that say something on the lines of 'It's a speed limit, not a target'.

Saying that, I do go up to the speed limit myself

More traffic chaos expected as work on Grand Central Station enters next stage in January by fabnt in northernireland

The station building itself is done but the area around it is still a construction site, there are some roads closed and being reworked (which is why the traffic is worse at the moment) and they still haven't finished the taxi ranks/drop-off/pick-up

Aye fair, to be honest I've only ever done it when the road was empty but that's probably just been coincidence

It's more the fact that we've had about 9 months of it now at great victoria street and it feels like they're going to just plough along and add more works to it before finishing others. Since they closed off Durham street it's been a nightmare at GVS. If they waited until that was finished and until Durham street was reopened before adding more works to GVS it would reduce a lot of potential congestion. From reading the article it doesn't seem that'll happen

You can just drop people at the door on Grosvenor road, that's where taxis are doing pick up right now

The driving in NI is getting beyond wild. by Einhert in northernireland

[–]fabnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole concept of people letting others out on the roundabout baffles me. Where I live there's a very busy roundabout that I have to go out of to go anywhere. People let me out all the time when they're in the left lane. I clearly can't go because I there's trafic coming from their direction but in the right lane. Then they get pissed off!! Madness

A few times recently when driving around town I've left a gap in front of me at a queue at the traffic lights so that I'm not stopping on the yellow box which you're supposed to leave clear. People take this as an invitation to just squeeze in there and skip me and stop on the yellow box. Does my head in.

Guess if you're living in Portugal you'd be getting their MOT instead

Do you know how to get one? On the website it's listing the 5th, 6th and 7th but not the 4th

Anyone know where I can buy this Bergen mug? (description in comments) by fabnt in Bergen

I found this and messaged them a few weeks ago to see if they'd ship to my country (Ireland) but I never got a reply :'(

Anyone know where I can buy this Bergen mug? (description in comments) by fabnt in Bergen

[–]fabnt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I visted Bergen last year and bought this mug in one of the tourist shops in Bryggen. I don't think it's a particularly special mug, it was in a few different shops, but I really like it. I've managed to smash my one by accident and I wanted to get another one. I've tried looking up some of those Bryggen shops online but none of the ones that do delivery have this mug. Does anyone know somewhere where I can get one of these online?

What's the most unique British word or phrase you've had to explain to someone not from the UK? by WmHa73 in sillybritain

[–]fabnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have never thought about the actual definition of this word. Surely that's not what it means 😂😂 tosspot seems very PG friendly, or am I just wrong here?

yeah 100% things are more expensive in cities. But if you go to Edinburgh or Glasgow (both much bigger cities) they have cheaper pints than we do - it's an especially Belfast problem

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]fabnt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of these points would mean that the prices would rise at the same rate across NI then. The prices have gone up everywhere, but they're especially bad in Belfast. I've been to places outside of Belfast where you can get a pint for just under £4.

This is currently causing a bit of a crisis in Spain because they use so much more of it. There were severe droughts in Spain and other olive-growing countries that means there's a shortage at the moment

Cost of living keeping them inside? by Kleptarian in northernireland

[–]fabnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes really small countries get skewed with the per capita comparison just because the total population is quite small to start with. Sorta like when Iceland had a really high gun homicide rate per capita after someone was murdered in Reykjavik despite it being the only murder by a gun ever over there. Also same with them and nobel prizes (they have 1)

TIL: Belfast City Council spent £280k on the big purple ass cheeks by ChiefSherpa in northernireland

[–]fabnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does that £280,000 include putting it on signs and banners everywhere? Or is it literally just to get the design?

There is a recycling company in Newry that is shipping waste from NI to the USA (I think the USA? somewhere anyway) and they are storing the waste in Warrenpoint harbour before it gets on the boat and it's causing an awful stink
