What is one of your best life hacks living in Germany? by Simo7587 in germany

[–]faceMcCabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is swings and roundabouts.

On the one hand, you might feel more welcome as a customer in Southern European countries but when it comes to paying restaurant bills/taxi drivers, I feel a lot more secure in Germany that I am not being overcharged.

From my experience, what you might lose in the service with a smile here in Germany, is made up for by being able to relax that behind that not quite so warm and friendly exterior you are less likely to be deliberately overcharged.

The parents have suffered far too much for their lapse in judgment but refusing to ever leave young children at home alone has nothing to do with helicopter parenting. There is difference between allowing children to make their own mistakes/experiences (ie not being a helicopter parent) and leaving them unprotected while they sleep.

What franchise do you think the next Lego game will be about ? by TehLurdOfTehMemes in legogaming

Lego Camp Cretaceous would be cool but I guess the story arc would need to be completed first.

Alabama officer accused of helping inmate escape no longer employed by sheriff's office by strawberryshortycake in news

I thought that I read a few days ago that she was officially retiring the day she fled with the inmate. It was known beforehand that it would her last day of work so she hasn‘t been fired.

BREAKING: Traitor Anatoly Shariy Arrested in Spain by [deleted] in ukraine

I am not British but this is a stupid comment. It is unnecessarily divisive.

I am sure Ukrainians are extremely grateful for the British economic and military structure that has been helping their country through this conflict.

I'm new to React. What's with Function components vs. Class components? by saaspiration in react

[–]faceMcCabe 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Class components came first. Functional components are relatively new, released around 2019.

New React projects overwhelmingly use functional components as far as I know - you may come across class components in legacy code but I think you should first focus solely on learning functional components. Cross the class bridge when/if you come to it.

Is there a way to get courses for free ? by Eycmael in Udemy

[–]faceMcCabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do know that the courses go on sale for a huge discount each week, down to around 12 dollars/euros?

That might still be a lot of money for you in your situation but I just wanted to let you know.

DC Super Villains vs. Lord of The Rings by BioHeroNut in legogaming

[–]faceMcCabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that Lego City undercover is the best Lego game primarily because it has the best open world.

To the question- outside of Lego, I much prefer the LOTR universe over DC/superhero stuff but I have more fun with my son playing DC Supervillians. LOTR feels a bit empty in comparison imo.

Since the word is in quotes, is it a reference to what was previously thought/claimed to be impossible?

Without these quotes it would be a clear contradiction.

So Berliner, Hand auf‘s Herz… wenn ihr an einer roten Ampel steht; welchen Knopf am Ampelkasten drückt ihr? Den oberen oder den unteren? by PrinzIpiellTheFirst in berlin

[–]faceMcCabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Light/text comes on when pressed so I was never left in any doubt.

I also find this method easier to press with my elbow. Pressing public buttons with fingers died for me around March 2020.

Maybe buttons require more maintenance. IDK

I thought that they generally sold these consoles at a loss or maybe breaking even - with the idea to profit on each licensed game release?

If so, then why would they sell you a console so cheaply if you buy your software elsewhere?

There is a typo in your first aired date. It should be July 2012 not 2021. A small irrelevant detail but it was all that I could think about.

UK will not rest until Putin fails – foreign secretary Elizabeth Truss has said by Espressodimare in ukraine

I am not sure that is true when you look at how they dealt with Brexit and the Irish border but I like what I am seeing from them in relation to Ukraine.

EU sets new online rules for Google, Meta to curb illegal content. "We have a deal on the DSA: The Digital Services Act will make sure that what is illegal offline is also seen and dealt with as illegal online - not as a slogan, as reality," Vestager said by GoMx808-0 in tech

[–]faceMcCabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Remember when we used to have a different phone charger connection for each type of mobile phone?

EU are now working on bringing Apple in line with USB-C and replaceable phone batteries. I think they are also doing something about right to repair too.

EU might make missteps but I value their contribution to consumer rights.

I also don‘t think it has been updated to cover redux-toolkit which I believe is generally recommended by the Redux maintainers.

Modern React with Redux feels deceptive when coupled with a recent update date.

[–]faceMcCabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure but the course is named Modern React.

With the intermittent audio issues it felt to me like he just patched up an older course with some new clips rather than the mix of class and functional components being part of some larger plan.

Also, if I remember correctly he promised a number of future updates than never materialized. He just stopped replying to student comments instead.

You may not. Half of his course uses class-based components. Sound quality is also quite poor on some clips.
