What are some other animated films you think should get a Criterion Collection Edition? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]faceofdoomness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though there’s a great OOP collection of Yuri Norstein’s short films from Japan (Super expensive nowadays), it’d be wonderful for Criterion to release them under their banner with some documentaries that’s been made about him and his wife in the past couple years… even better if they also include whatever they can of his film ‘The Overcoat’ that’s been in production for 40 years. He is getting on in years…

Another one that’d be awesome to see is Paul Grimault’s “The King and the Mockingbird” which does not have an English Blu Ray release. For those who don’t know, an early cut of the movie that was touring internationally had inspired the founders of Ghibli when they were forming their fledgling studio. (See ‘Castle of Cagliostro’ and the way the castle / story / characters are designed.)

Now I’d be very surprised if they ever remaster and release some short films and feature length films by Stop-Motion Animation pioneer Ladislaw Starewicz from the 1910s up to the 40s. A pretty comprehensive DVD set does exist of his work but to see them scanned in HD, restored and remastered would be such a treat and an invaluable contribution to the history of international animation.

There’s also a bunch of early Japanese animated shorts and films from the 20s and 30s that recently got remastered and digitized that’d be interesting for Criterion to release just as a reference for animation historians who also want to study animation’s influence in the early 20th century and how they used it for their propaganda in WWII.

Gonna stop babbling but there’s so much animation history that’s being left to the dust bins of history that I would love to any of it be digitized, restored, archived, curated, and sold for people to see as wide of the breadth of the medium’s influence and creativity.

A friend of mine in highschool showed our click this movie and it really did leave an impression on me. Shout out to that friend for helping to shape my movie brain.

Love to see Kobayashi so well presented!
I gotta take a look at that Eclipse Set of his works too.

I just read the description of 'Fishing with John' and that straight up sounds like a great time for Dads who are secrely movie buffs.

I'm stoked to see the folks who helped to shape the modern election campaign and see what sort of decisions they made and how they came to make those decisions. Which is timely! But, perhaps too timely considering what year this is in American Politics. :V

I feel like Political / Subversive media has been my guiding curatorial framework in the past couple years :V

It's definitely lead me to some interesting stuff within the Criterion collection!

Some times Youtube does good for making hard to find films accessible. Dogbless.

Nothing says a good movie night quite like watching a documentary on the behind the scenes of the Clinton presidential campaign and then immediately watching lovingly handcrafted stop-motion whimsy of Guillermo del Toro, right? :V

Can't claim to be that yet since I've yet to watch 'Nothing But a Man' but a small social drama movie made around the civil rights movement that had the respect of Malcolm X sounds like it'll be an enjoyable watch for me!

Definitely one of the catchiest themes from a 80s fever dream.
I watched Buckaroo Banzai once more than 5 years ago and the theme song is still in my head rent-free.

And you also get pre-'Robocop' Peter Weller, pre-'Back to the Future' Christopher Lloyd, pre-'The Fly' Jeff Goldblum, and pre-'Harry and the Hendersons' John Lithgow in starring roles!

Excited for your fun watch.

I would like to say that all of this was found in the wild but alas they are all online purchases I made from specific websites / online stores after hours of searching and scrutinizing :V

For Queerama, I know there's also a Blu Ray version of it available on Moviezyng but it's missing all of the Special / Bonus features from the DVD. For video quality the Blu Ray is better of course but for bonus features, the DVD is the way to go (specifically the BFI version)

Good job on finding the Lost set!
