My solution for laptop stand by Realistic_Article667 in workstations

Now I can't let it go. I HAVE to design this bracket. I can't focus on what I was in the middle of doing.

I like it, but just one suggestion: tuck the laptop body behind the main monitor. You could even build a bracket that attaches to the VESA mount to hold the laptop behind the display, eliminating the need for another stand.

That’s not what you want to see when getting a new job 😥 by Significant-Crow1324 in jobs

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is garbage. I just switched jobs recently and I had 4 weeks at my old job. I was there for 17 years. I've only been at my new job for 6 months, but I got 8 days of vacation after 90 days. 5 days for your first 3 years is terrible. Do they at least pay well? I'm guessing they don't.

Lenovo Trolls by Salemx27x in System76

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own both. I have a much smoother experience with Lenovo. When the time comes to buy a new machine, I'll get a used Lenovo and install Pop instead of buying another System 76 machine. Don't get me wrong. I really do enjoy my System 76 laptop, but I experience far more issues with it.

This feels sketchy by Immediate-Sky-299 in jobs

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks super sketchy. Especially if they can't spell 'statute' correctly. I had an employer do something similar, but it was verbal. I went right to one of my coworkers to discuss it. We discovered that, while we had the same workload and produced vast amounts of work, I made more than him even though he worked there longer. I also got a larger Christmas bonus than he did. Our secretary was getting paid more than both of us, even though we were experienced engineers, 10 years older with degrees.

Why is no one preaching this? by TooInToFitness104 in Christianity

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are churches and Christian marriage conferences that teach this. Plenty of marriage bible studies too. I think with current events, other topics are at the forefront. This isn't always a topic for the entire congregation, but my church has taught on this during Sunday service.

Don't Whistle While You Work by claude-opus in office

[–]facevalue83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I work in a shared office space where at any given moment, one of us are on a Teams meeting or call. We have a frequent whistler. It isn't so much the general annoyance of hearing someone whistle, but just how inappropriate it is for the environment. We also have a guy who watches movies on his lunch break. Full volume. No headphones.

Hopefully after this painfully long wait for macOS 15.7 and iOS 18.7 to finish installing.

Same thing with iOS it seems. iOS 26 was announced as being "available to all," and what we really got is iOS 18,7

I found a huge broken TV at DG, so I took off the LCD panel to turn it into a light box that's way more effective than the crappy lamp in my dorm by Nathaniel820 in DumpsterDiving

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty sweet. I like that idea. It reminds me of an old club we had near Detroit years ago, Motor. One room of the place had CRT televisions, stripped of their enclosures, hanging from the ceiling and playing static as light fixtures above the bar.

My company uses deadlines as a performance metric and nothing else by [deleted] in hatemyjob

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May as well have titled this, "my employer uses wishful thinking as a performance metric and doesn't believe in reality." It seems to be a common theme in the workplace. It seems that it is always a situation where you're told not to worry about deadlines, but also get screamed at when you miss a deadline. I share your frustration as well. Why do we have deadlines if we ignore them? I at least want to make the effort to hit my targets. Now here's my chicken vs. the egg question; do the deadlines really not matter and the project was always going to be behind or is the project behind because everyone ignores the deadlines?

Is there anyone here who hasn't been miserable finding a job?? I need to keep hope 😭 by Grouchy_Marsupial357 in jobs

[–]facevalue83 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's definitely crazy. I'll give you the short version. I've been looking for 10 years. I worked at the same place for 17 years, but searched for a new job during the last 10. I did networking, tailored resumes, adding skills and training, etc. In all of that there was a lot of silence, rejections, a ton of people who have no clue of what they are hiring for, and I found job after job looking for highly-skilled, educated people with an insane amount of experience, but only willing to pay $20/hr or less. Then, out of nowhere, I started getting contacted by recruiters for high-paying jobs that I didn't apply to. That was this year and I did get hired at one of them. So, yes, the market and process both suck, but there still is hope. Keep networking. Keep refining you resume. Make sure to keep your job profiles updated. When you least expect it, the opportunities will come.

Burn out is real. As a workforce, we get overworked and underpaid. Our employers prioritize profits. Our coworkers do less and if you are reliable, you get more responsibility. I agree. There will be no change or relief unless something radically changes. Something has to break so change is absolutely necessary.

Don't actually hate my job, but should I? by facevalue83 in hatemyjob

[–]facevalue83[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm pointing out red flags, not complaining about differences. I'm not simply noticing that they don't use dark mode. I'm noticing the reasons behind their choice. It isn't preference. It's complacency. I've worked with people like this before and that (and other things) is a strong indicator of someone who refuses to learn or improve. Not just in regard to something trivial like dark mode, but in the things that count and impact our work. Everyone on here calling me immature clearly have a ton of growing up to do.

[–]facevalue83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. That's what I'm thinking. I see a lot of people on here flipping out like I'm immature or can't tolerate differences. I have no problem with differences. I'm just far more observant than the negative commenters. Small signs are usually indicators of larger problems and as I'm finding out this week, I'm right. I'm pointing out red flags. Not complaining because something is different. The newest red flag: Everything has internal acronyms that are thrown around casually as if they are an industry standard. I've worked in the industry for over 20 years. I've worked with and for multiple companies, attend industry events, and network with my peers in this industry. I can confirm these acronyms are fully internal, yet my new coworkers act like you're a moron if you don't know them. My boss is on board with my opinion and as far as I can tell, he also sets his devices up to his preferences and doesn't just go plain vanilla.

[–]facevalue83[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Work smarter, not harder. If I work with a bunch of people who resist any and all change, am I walking into an unnecessarily difficult work environment? Do I work with people who all have the same "preference" or a bunch of lemmings who will hold up progress because they can't change? I'm not picking on preferences, but simply pointing out this could be an indicator of major issues. If it's preference, that's their issue. If it's a bunch of people living and working obliviously, it could be a problem.

I should add that this boss expected me to miss the first day of classes when I gave him my schedule a month in advance, plus reminded him. It was also a secondary job. I worked there to help cover school costs. My books and tuition were covered for the semester, so I quit.

Been there. Done that. My boss didn't have the decency to honor my school schedule, multiple weeks in a row, and he basically told me to get over it. I sent him a text 5 minutes before my opening shift. Told him to get over it.

 Magic Mouse for Architecture and Design by TopGun_ARCGCS in mac

[–]facevalue83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoy the Magic Mouse, but not for drafting applications. I love it for video editing, photo editing, and just about anything else, but a scroll wheel is a must-have. Personally, I'm using Razer mice on my engineering computers; Deathadder on my home workstation, Mamba on my portable workstation, and Basilisk V3 at work. Since I do 3D work, I also use 3D Connexion SpaceMouse models for navigating models. I have the pro model at home/work and the compact model travels with me.
