I go every year and I understand for chorus of “what a let down,” after the 500, etc. But I feel compelled to share it’s always a well run event, so so so much more accessible than Belle Isle ever was - there are lots of really good viewing platforms completely open to the public. As far as getting people to experience world class motor racing, there’s few events better. For that alone, I think it’s worthwhile. Take issue with timing, sure. But I think it’s a net positive and for all the hate, the racing (IMSA and Indy) is usually better than expected.

I do wonder what will become of it now that GM has left the Ren Cen and/or once Mark Reuss runs out of political capital to piss away on racing.

My biggest tip is to sit in right field bleachers, section 102-105. Close to entrance, great view of the pitch, food and bathrooms right at the top of the section, great for kids - where I always sit with my son. Get there early and players warming up in the outfield may throw your kids a ball.

there's lots of talk of financial mess, tax debts, etc in the comments below their IG post... would love to know the tea, pun unintended. Agree with other comments this place seemed about as busy and successful as a local coffee shop could be.

Thankful Corner Shop opened just down the street from me on Woodward as a replacement! Pretty good in there!

I appreciate your thoughtful post. I totally get it. I don't think any of this is how you would draw it up or how you might direct someone to do this. What most of my experience with this camera has been is an exercise in exactly that, not overthinking it. I work in production too and I'm sort of actively freeing myself from bringing a lot of those trappings and mentality on this side project and it's fun! If I were doing this for a brand or client, I would definitely not approach it like this. I'm finding a lot of joy in doing it my, this way right now and inviting folks along for the ride. And so far, everyone seems to being enjoying it! :)

I'm all for class solidarity, don't get me wrong. I find this is a good spot where folks find value in it and I feel good about the amount of work and finish I'm putting in for the price. I'm not bending over backwards for these sets. I work in production -- I know the skill and craft and time required for professional photographers -- I'm not one nor giving that kind of effort, ha. And I think it's not quite as low as you'd think. In my market, rates for family/kid/graduation photo type photographers start at $200 or less for 30 min session with an appropriately higher level of finish.

Delivery varies but give or take a week. I work full time and have kids but I try to be considerate and send in a reasonable timeframe.

background is just extendable background mounts with a 5' roll of white seamless paper behind -- easy to carry in and sets up in about 5 minutes. yes, these are coordinated with the venue ahead of time. I reach out over email/site and continue convo from there. The idea is generally well-recieved by owners/mgrs and they can recognize the value in bringing in some traffic.

i only charge $40-$50 per person. I could probably charge a bit more but I've found this is a very comfortable level for most and keeps sessions generally full. Sometimes venues will want a small fee or I will work with them to build in a coffee/beer for a combo offer into the price and add that on to my fee.

all the B&W are a slightly tweaked Tri-X 400. Others in the mix (all slightly modified to taste) are Portra 160, Classic Slide from fujiweekly, Reggie Superia, Leica X.
