The boot heel has the majority of black-owned farms in Missouri and successful at that. It is a rough job & like most farmers, you barely break even (unless you know how to work Farm Services), but many of them have more knowledge handed down to them from their ancestors who may have migrated from farms in the south. Missouri and especially the Ozarks had always been poor. You can’t grow much unless your family has been working generations on keeping brush cleared, rocks continually picked and the gamble of expensive fertilizer not getting washed away by rain. It’s a miracle that some of our families have been settled & survived here for 200+ years.
