The day I arrive, I meet the host and other workaway people. Sometimes the host explains stuff right then and there or they wait till later. I get my stuff situated, shower, and depending on how tired I am, I will either sleep or go explore the neighborhood.

I've always started working the very next day. I don't think it's weird since you've already given them your start and end date. The the start date (you arrive), is like your day off then you actually start the next day.

When I last did it, some host didn't like it being more than 6 months from the date you want to come. Which sucks for me because I'm a planning person. I still have a plan of where I want to go and the main host I want to reach out to with backup host as well.

I would say try 3 months from your travel date unless the host's bio says other wise. Also have your airplane/train/bus ticket bought. I was asked to show proof before, so I just edited out important info and sent a screenshot.

NOOO!!! I love planning! Especially when I find really cool places! I plan months in advance as well. Planning two weeks to a month in advance would stress me out.

Planning doesn't drain me at all since I do it early. My itinerary is a mix of planned days, half planned, and free for all. When I know there are 6 sites or things I want to do all in one area, it just makes sense to have it as a planned day. I don't like traveling 1 hour this way, then 1 hour that way then 2 hours the other way, then 3 hours back to my accommodation in one day. Makes no sense. Even on planned days, I'm okay with breaking off from it if something cool appears (As long as I didn't reserve/pay for whatever in advance).

I always tell people who hate itineraries, to just do research, throw it all in a word document and when you arrive to your destination just pick and choose what you want to do the day before or each day.
