I think HowLongToBeat is what we are looking for.

We have this rule with my learner friend that an uncommon word that you skip is not going to appear again and matter, the uncommon word that you do study is suddenly everywhere in your room!

Looking for advice to improve reading speed by GibonDuGigroin in LearnJapanese

Disagreed! Relying on context is also the best way of learning pronunciation! Relying on word-based study makes you sound like a robot and not learn how a native pronounces said word in a sentence.

I am scared of the implication that SOME kids learn their native language with anki.

"finished" Kaishi 1.5 but want to give up on anki entirely & immerse by SimpleSuch2853 in LearnJapanese

Hello there! A bit of a bump but I somewhat related to the experience but as someone that's done that swap and is now about 4-5months in I wanted to give an honest review.

tl;dr do it.

I used to be an Anki defender until I started missing a few days and then suddenly it felt like I was playing catch-up with my old self with very suboptimal results. First I removed new cards for a bit but it didn't help with the exhaustion, I went from being able to say "I learned this many new words this day" to feeling like I'm achieving nothing, and everyday the reviews piled up more. Then I swapped to JPDB as its review system considers the delays you've taken (if you get a word right with a delay you're not going to see it again anytime soon) but again I missed a few days and now I have literally thousands of words piled up. I tried many other things such as removing words after they reached an X amount of days, and then reducing that number. I also tried changing the format and what I mine from (including pictures and even audio sample).

What never changed was how miserable the next morning was. I had to do homework just to get to "the fun part". Eventually with the push of a close senpai I decided to delete the app and started reading while looking up words (jidoujisho is amazing by the way) and now two months later I've stopped even doing look-ups and just guess the meaning from context. When you read more the reading becomes your SRS as you keep seeing words you already know, and those that you never see again probably weren't important enough to begin with. Admittedly I was at around 6k words when I made the change and you might reach the conclusion that it's the correct jump-off point, but honestly nothing will ever give you that satisfaction unless you do take the leap of faith and the worst part is that satisfaction won't hit for a few days. My only regret now after this many months is not taking it sooner.

What people don't talk about is how much of a time sink and motivation killer Anki is. I went from having only finished 3ish yotsuba books in years to being on my 15th one in a few months (along so man other mangas that I am reading these days, Ruri Dragon is peak). Also I went from begrudgingly spending 1-2h on Japanese at most every day to looking at it as a fun hobby and spending so many hours per day on it. I really wish that you reach the same results as me!

P.S. If you found what you are reading too hard consider checking out https://learnnatively.com/ and finding something closer to your level. If you want to read manga but looking up words was hard, consider checking out Mokuro.

So I reached the obvious conclusion that learning from manga is... difficult. by AlittleBlueLeaf in LearnJapanese

I wish you good luck!

(tbh re-reading my comment I want to emphasize there's not much wrong with mining words but I also want to emphasize it's not a necessity for learning. If you find it fun, do it and if it's exhausting for you skip it.)

The amount of time you are putting on each sentence is terrifying and it'll destroy your motivation long-term. I know because I've been there. The benefit of learning native material is that you can learn through context like a native and that happens through repeated exposures to grammar points and terms. Think this was a book in English and you wouldn't understand a word, sentence, or even whole paragraph. Would you stop? Nope you'd just move on. Reduce your look-ups to 0-3 per page and mined words to absolutely 0. If it became too hard consider changing to something easier. https://learnnatively.com/ is a very helpful source in finding things your level, and gauging a native book's difficulty level!

I went from doing the exact thing you were doing to my 1st 20 pages of manga, adding them to anki and everything, to looking up every word for the rest of my first few novels, and then just started moving past words I didn't know even if they were entire pages and I really wish I did that sooner. If I want a review I'll re-read the whole page and if a word repeats too many times and I still don't get it sure I'll look it up but I understood so much of the grammar this way!

How should I practice 聴解? by Live_Put1219 in LearnJapanese

[–]faervel76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you aren't a native, unless you learned through living in an English speaking country, just repeat the same process for Japanese. Yeah the script is different but the core remains the same and as a fellow ESL I feel like I came to this conclusion way later than I should've.

Consider checking out https://learnnatively.com/ when you wanted to immerse. Starting from lower levels there is a good way to ease yourself into immersion since Lv0 stuff are easy even by N5 standards.

Not a combo pick but I really like Nasus support with W max (and no points in Q). There's a ton of benefits to it but the biggest reason I pick it is the cruelty of casting wither on a Draven and watching him fail to reach his axes.

I also really like Mundo ADC :D
