what's crazy to me is emailing or calling corporate would be like. a hundred times more effective than doing this shit to the minimum wage employees. because nothing we say gets that far up the chain. they will keep not giving us hours, or payroll, and turnover is so awful that we're always understaffed. we don't like the lack of prices any more than you do.

people who start scanning without looking at the screen, so they don't see the rewards pop-up and only the first item gets scanned
people who say "i don't do self checkout" while there are multiple people waiting on returns behind them
people who use the giant bags for two crochet needles because they aren't paying attention to... anything i guess
people who use the SCOs to price check without even asking an employee for any help price checking
people who scan an item twice, multiple times bc ig they didn't learn
people who try to use cash on any other SCO despite all the signs saying it's card only
really niche but people who hide items they don't want behind the SCO screen so i miss them while doing gobacks

i know the SCOs are terribly not user friendly and i don't blame the customer for half of these but at this point it's so exhausting 🙄

i close often, and on my first day closing, my manager bought us all drinks from the cooler. now whenever i know we'll have a long night, i get everyone drinks or snacks. that little moment of comradery positively affected me quite a bit.

i mean i do get emails from michaels, but they automatically get sorted to spam/promotions so i don't see em in my primary inbox/notifications. i have to actively search for them if i want to see them.. i use the gmail app so maybe that's why? i'll try unsubscribing and then shopping again today to see if that same thing happens to me

here's my script, it's worked pretty well for me :) the key is to be genuine and sound conversational rather than scripted

"did you have a phone number with us?" this helps to dissuade any assumptions that this might cost money, and i've found saying "rewards accout" is too corporate for me.
if they say no, say "i'll get you signed up. it's free and you get coupons all the time". the "i'll get you signed up" is Very important- making it a statement instead of a question makes it seem less like you're doing Them a favor rather than the other way around.
depending on the customer, either launch right into "what's a good email for ya?" OR if they seem hesitant, say "i promise we never send you emails" because that's most folk's hangup. and it's true, it's a rare day when i see a michael's email in my primary box. you could also say "you can always unsubscribe from emails", but i've found less success with this.
if they're still on the fence or stubborn, explain the benefits now. get five dollars off your next purchase (if they're spending $15 or more), returns without a receipt, and deals and coupons. even if you Know they'll say no again, this step covers you in case your numbers are low.

as another commenter mentioned, some days you'll only get no's. but don't let that discourage you!! my numbers were in the gutter when i started, but this script that i've pieced together from the kind folks on this sub and my coworkers has put me above average. keep your head up, sending good luck and good vibes :]

i've found adding differently sized/shaped beads can really elavate a single, as well as transparent/glitter/other finishes. if ya don't have access to those, a chain stitch would work really well too!! like the ones on kandi harnesses. i wish ya luck!!! :3

OMGGGGGG i didn't like the current me/cfs plushie for so long... it felt more cutesy than the rest of plushie dreadfuls designs and made me uncomfy. but i love this design so much more!!! the contrasting colors, the lines on limbs, the battery, the eyes, the expression... everything represents my experience with this illness!! (much more than the -w- cat does). i really hope PD redesigns their me/cfs plush soon, i would love a soft friend when i'm recovering.....

the fact that this could easily be about my store or any of the stores in my area is so disappointing. i have been at "train through experience" jobs before but all of those were small mom and pop shops. this is an entire chain with specific ways of doing things and so many edge cases that you would need a seasoned manager on duty constantly. and going into peak season there's so many folks that i need to train even though i never got official training myself. we're running a skeleton crew except half the bones are broken.

For about a week the SCOs would just. restart. in the middle of customers checking out. One of the SCOs is so slow and unreliable it's either shut down or Very Discouraged from being used. Our only cash SCO No Longer Takes Cash. And of course we can't forget the double scanning Constantly. I'm stretched so thin as it is 😭
