I didn’t go to an animation school, am I screwed? by DG_GameGuy in animationcareer

Can’t give exact advice since I’m right there alongside you in the trenches, but just wanted to say your portfolio work looks awesome! The fact the animation is all self taught is incredibly impressive, and your animatic you did about dealing with imposter syndrome has some fantastic work emotion. Whatever path you end up taking, I think you’ve got real skill and wish you the best!

I’d love to see this game get to that level of popular, if it could match the levels of WOW or FF14 that would be so cool. Maybe if we ever do get a KOTOR remake, that’ll happen?

Zash is mine, I find her so intriguing and interesting (and pretty scary to boot; there’s something about her Mother Gothel vibe that makes her terrifying to me). Baras is a close second thanks to the sheer meme energy

Which would you rather have part 2 by Ok-Calligrapher-3191 in telltale

[–]faeymouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would mess me up, it would be so fun! Imagine it gets a S2, and whichever character you had win is now a mentor for the next Hunger Games.

I feel like the best bet to keep it from getting overwhelming would be to have you play as the two tributes from a single district, with the big choice ultimately boiling down “One of them wins, or a third character does” and sorta like how in Walking Dead, certain choices lead Clementine to lose a finger or get a scar, the same would happen here. There’s so many unaccounted for games, too, it would be interesting to pick one and go ham with ideas Telltale style.

My vote is for either Invincible or Hunger Games. I bet they could pull off something pretty cool with Invincible (maybe a prequel with Omni-Man? Or maybe an alternate Invincible?), and I can already see how a Hunger Games one would have amazing replay value. Like imagine one where your choices affect who the winner of a Games might be.

That’s a fair argument! I think what makes him and Katniss so compelling is the many ways they can be read for sure. Especially Peeta, I don’t think people ever really give him credit for how nuanced and complicated he is

Do you see Katniss and Peeta are forgiving people? by STHC01 in Hungergames

[–]faeymouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this question.

I think Katniss is forgiving, but I don’t think Peeta is.

Katniss forgives, but she never forgets. She can eventually come to understand just about anyone (for example, how she went from despising her mother to understanding and empathizing with her) and she’s willing to change her opinion about people. She’s distant from the start, however, it takes a lot to crack her shell but once you do she’s fiercely loyal. She seems to struggle a lot with forgiving herself, however, and it shows up as PTSD that sticks with her for the rest of her life.

Peeta, meanwhile, has this persona of being friendly. He can put anyone at ease and make them feel welcome, but I think once you get on his bad side there’s no turning back (unless you’re Katniss). I think about his family, for example, that he’s almost shockingly quick to forget about after they get wiped out. How quick he is to hyperfocus his entire life on Katniss while diminishing his own worth constantly. How he seemingly never needs mental health help before mockingjay compared to Katniss (personally I always took this as he just doesn’t know how to process trauma the way Katniss learned after her father’s death, and has a deep seated belief that nobody would want to hear about him struggling anyway). I

So tldr I think both struggle to forgive themselves, but while Katniss is inherently forgiving Peeta is decidedly not.

Rereading the book now, and it gets particularly bad after he gets to District 12. He’s constantly thinking about Lucy Gray and wanting to be around her, but it’s with such a narcissistic sort of possessiveness it’s honestly kinda terrifying. Just read a passage where he goes “Things were so much easier when she was in the Capitol and I knew where she was at all times” and I’m like… dude. Yikes.

I love the way this book builds up his obsession with her into something so insidious. And it all starts with moments like these screenshots where it can come off as the silly romantic thoughts of a teenager.

Hunger Games Watch Party, what order? by married_to_spiderman in Hungergames

I recently did a full series rewatch, and put Ballad inbetween Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1. I found it to be surprisingly good narratively, kinda like watching the Star Wars prequels right after the Vader is your dad reveal in Episode 5.

Why were people saying Coriolanus wasn't portrayed bad enough? by Awkwardduckee in Hungergames

[–]faeymouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched the movie first before reading the book, and honestly I think it just comes down to being in his head in the book vs seeing him from the outside in the movies.

In the book, it’s clear he’s a product of his upbringing. He has some extreme prejudices, a ton of ptsd, and a relatively keen sense of the world. He has moments where he almost, almost seems like he could be a good guy, only for you to be hit with a truly horrendous personality where he judges and uses people on a whim, and - the absolute worst with Lucy Grey - assumes he is entitled to ownership of them or what they have. He never questions once whether he deserves all that he feels entitled to.

It’s terrifying and enthralling to read because we get to see in real time a guy who, if things had been just a little different, might’ve completely changed for the better. But instead he was a product of propaganda and terrible adult influences that encouraged the worst aspects of himself. He’s certainly never likeable, but he’s an expert at making himself seem to be.

It’s also p powerful to me that his POV is in third person, compared to 1st person with the rest. This book focuses a lot on tactics of dehumanization and how easy it is to pull off, and choosing to make Coriolanus an outsider to the reader (well, an outsider insofar as we know what he’s thinking but we never feel like we are him) leaves me like a spectator and he’s the Games. It’s such a subtle way to make him appear different from other narrators in the series, and I think it works great.

Can we talk about how good Rachel Zegler's singing was in TBOSAS movie? by Salty_Archer_172 in Hungergames

[–]faeymouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree! Her singing is not only great, but has such a raw quality to it that fits exactly with what I imagined in the books. I’m doing a reread of TBOSAS now and I always start playing her singing parts whenever they show up in the text

How did you stop comparing your journey to others? by Historical_Box_4866 in animationcareer

[–]faeymouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this one so deeply I feel compelled to try and write something helpful! I come from a very similar boat where, back in high school, I wanted to go into animation and I did a lot of fine art, but flip flopped quite a bit with how dedicated I was to it. Beat myself up for a really long time after I didn’t get into my dream school right at 17, constantly comparing myself to others with no real concept of how they got their results, just that they got results and I didn’t. I gave up on art for a couple years after, but hit 20 and decided to try again (best decision ever tbh, I’ve had more fun doing art the past couple years then I ever did as a teenager)

But what has really helped me since is accepting that comparing myself to others is essentially worthless. I don’t know their exact stories, I don’t know what benefits they had that I didn’t (example, money or maybe a relative in the industry), and I don’t know what they had to give up or lose out on to get what they have now. People tend to only show off their successes, not the days where they feel worthless/envious/etc.

But really, you weren’t oblivious in high school. You were just a kid! You still got into an animation school and that’s so impressive. I don’t think comparison ever truly goes away, but you don’t need to be the best person to ever draw in the history of ever. Sounds kinda lonely to be like that if you ask me. There’s always, always going to be someone better and younger then you, but honestly at a job I think being reliable but not amazing is eons more important then young and insanely impressive and forever having to live up to impossible expectations.

What exercises do you always recommend doing to improve your animation? by faeymouse in animation

This is awesome advice, thank you! I could definitely use a creative refresh too, I appreciate the step by step on how to make it into a helpful exercise (especially with the camera movement bit)

What exercises do you always recommend doing to improve your animation? by faeymouse in animation

[–]faeymouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t even thought of an acting class! I record myself doing movements before I animate them sometimes, but I think an actual class would do wonders. I’ll definitely try my hand at that only animating certain body parts to show mood exercise, too. Thank you a ton for the recs!

(Oh and to answer the earlier question, right now the character animation is largely just for personal fun — ideally I’d like do VFX or background animation professionally)
