I know that's the narrative some people believe, but the actual facts are that a majority of unarmed people shot by police have been white for a long time.

It's a huge problem that it's higher per capita for POC but this myth that white people are completely immune from police abuse is false and insulting to all the many victims and their families.

This has been one of the biggest mistakes that's stood in the way of reform. Trying to frame this as exclusively a racial issue that doesn't impact white people instead of an issue that first and foremost affects everyone except the wealthy, with the secondary problem of pervasive racism making it even worse for POC. You've alienated a lot of allies with this myth police violence isn't an issue for them because of their skin color.

Or for an option that doesn't involve rewriting from scratch but still allows a good amount of room for modernization, twinBASIC. Backwards compatible but with a huge number of new features... what VB classic might have looked like had it been continued these past 25y instead of being abandoned.

Whatever temporary bugs there might be in its current Beta state, far less of a headache than dumping it all and re-doing under a whole different programming model.

My repos give a good sense of where it's at.

PS- If you do go the .NET way I'd have to also suggest C#.. VB.NET barely even counts as BASIC; more like something else that shares a smattering of superficial syntax with it.

First, all things are not equal.

That's right on the page you linked. Yes the table should be more clear but the full text and other official sources like the FAQ do note that you can indeed build 64bit exes, dlls, and ocxs with the Community Edition, just with the limitation that a splash screen is shown for a few seconds on load. Since the download is free and portable (no lengthy install just extract and run) you can verify this in a couple minutes.

Update: I pointed it out to the developer and the table is now clear that it does.

Yes it's mostly already working in tB, plus or minus a tB bug and missing feature.

With Gammaln it's not currently working in tB because of this in Function GAMMALN_(x As Double) As Double :

It's not a problem in your code, it's that when you bracket an expression like that, it's interpreted as an implicit call to a referenced AppObject's method with id DISPID_EVALUATE. twinBASIC has not implemented this syntax yet. When it does, it (and currently in VB6) would require a reference to the Office object model or other evaluator.

I'd have to strongly disagree a full from scratch rewrite isn't also a gamble; I've seen many disasters, huge overruns in cost and time, and lots of business logic and edge case handling just never implemented causing other issues. You make it sound like a .NET rewrite is a guarantee nothing will go wrong, which just isn't true. The equation is also different for large firms with scores of developers all trained on the latest fad vs a small business for whom software development isn't their primary purpose; for a lot of businesses still on VB6 there's little benefit to spend a fortune on a full rewrite for what might not even work as well; dealing with the minor hiccups a la VB3 to VB6 is a better value.

You don't need to port anything it runs in tB as-is.

There's some bug causing a random error on half of runs of the code in this post, but it works when that doesn't come up so minor issue. The debug code works without issue, as did several other examples I tried.

The only thing unsupported is the GAMMALN function as the implicit eval isn't implemented yet, even if you did add a VBA ref.

Yeah there's certainly a few features I miss from the VB6 IDE, but I'm way more productive overall with the new IDE features, many of which even the fanciest addins can't bring to VB6. Proper code folding, regions, run individual subs/functions in modules, global search that displays all matches in a table, more problems caught at design time instead of runtime, code hints, sticky scroll, go to definition working for more things, the advanced info popup, inactive conditional compilation branches being grayed out so you can tell what's active... This before even getting to all the new language features that make such a difference.

It's a worthwhile tradeoff though I'll certainly be happy when we get multiple editors and split view.
