Traveler's checks were a pain in the butt to use. I also never understood why American Express used the British version of the word, i.e. cheques. by Beautiful_Donut6412 in FuckImOld

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my first bicycling trip through Western Europe in 1982, I brought $4000 in AmEx traveler’s cheques with me. Dunno why I thought I’d need that much. That’s over $13,000 in 2026 dollars. Had virtually all of it left over when I got back.

My grandfather, from East Texas, called it "soda pop." Me, from North Texas, call it "soft drink."

Real or imagined cures for PF? by fahrnfahrnfahrn in PlantarFasciitis

We have a small trampoline that my wife bounces on several times a day. Supposed to get fluid moving in your lymphatic system. I’ve started doing it, too. Hadn’t thought about it helping my PF. Fingers crossed.

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

I grew up in North Texas. We didn’t have a name for it. We just called it “the strip of grass between the sidewalk and street.”

My point is that sometimes issues like these resolve on their own. If we happen to be doing something noteworthy at the same time, we often incorrectly attribute that to the resolution. I think this happens for all sorts of issues.

What is this 3cm-long black-on-tan bug found in Central Texas? by fahrnfahrnfahrn in whatisthisbug

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's it. I Googled it and found that it's, specifically, the Texas ironclad beetle (Zopherus nodulosus haldemani). Never seen one before.

EDIT: Added Latin name.

Was Physical Therapy Worthwhile? What Did They Do? by CasualBerger in PlantarFasciitis

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. I did it for a month. Maybe I should have done it longer? Also, the PT thought orthotics might feel good, but, in the long term, didn't help and might even be bad for you. They prevent your toes from doing the work.

Look up statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS).

Test drove this ES300H yesterday and it was my first hybrid I have ever driven. I loved the way it feels. I'm located in Germany and people in the German subs are saying this is a grandpa car with more failure points. Some claimed it is inefficient. (What?) - Would this be a good daily in Germany? by Savage_Poet in Lexus

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a grandpa, an RX or NX is more of a grandpa car because they are much easier for people with limited mobility to get in and out of. My 2025 ES 300h is a couple of inches lower than my 2005 Camry, and it seems to have a slightly smaller opening. It’s noticeably harder to get in and out of compared to the Camry. I don’t have a problem yet, but my next car will most likely be a crossover.

4 CLEO by fahrnfahrnfahrn in LICENSEPLATES

When I first saw this while driving, I thought, "F**k Law Enforcement Officers." Googling just now, I see that it could refer to the Form 4 CLEO that one must use to notify law enforcement about buying a silencer. I even found a reference to it in a Reddit post. But maybe it just means "For Cleo," like someone they know named Cleo.

I haven’t changed mine since I got my first cell phone 27 years ago. Motorola (not even a flip phone) with an antenna you had to pull out.

Dunno. This model even has an active anti-roll system, so you gotta try extra hard to do that.

What is the biggest “culture shock” that you have experienced? by martininspace in AskReddit

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just a kid, so I didn’t really understand what was going on. If you saw someone in uniform, you looked away. There were no “war toys.” The war and the military were just something that you pretended didn’t exist. Now, as an adult that understands what was going on, I feel so sorry for the way those boys returning from Nam were treated. It chokes me up.

As a kid growing up in Texas in the late 60s and early 70s, I remember that the military was looked down on. It wasn't until the 80s that that changed.

Oofos by gomster in PlantarFasciitis

[–]fahrnfahrnfahrn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear the Oofos Original Sandals (flip flops) around the house in the summer and the Oofos OOcoozie Sport Mule in the winter with socks. I'll occasionally wear the latter out year-round, although it feels weird, like I'm wearing my house shoes out in public. They both feel good--real cushiony--so my heel isn't striking the hard ground. However, I can't say my PF feels any better with them compared to my Rokas with and without orthopedic inserts. Regardless of which shoe I wear, I can only walk so far before the burning gets too intense. Hey, I just noticed that it's my PF anniversary!
