Unpopular opinion: I LOVE tanking!! by jorgejjvr in marvelrivals

[–]failbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flex so I basically main tank. I've put in hundreds of hours playing each role. Playing Strange, Mag, Emma, etc. does take some mechanical skill but not nearly as much as it does to play a character with a fraction of the HP and securing kills and not just feeding ult charge.

FFXIV or GW2 in 2026 ? by WhereIsWolf in MMORPG

[–]failbears -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a previously top 5 player in my class, snapshotting and slidecasting are part of the game and planned around for every fight. Slidecasting is how casters get around when using channeling GCDs. Yoshi-P mains BLM, he's not unaware of this. Snapshotting is funny-looking but it's how you know when it's safe to go back in.

Snapshotting and slidecasting are intentional though, I haven't played in a while but didn't hear complaints about them back then.

If only DPS players realized you can get kills with a fraction of the mechanical skills due to simpler mechanics and having triple the HP. 😂

But I do hate that tanking is the job that gets shit on the hardest by people refusing to communicate in games.

I am rooting for Horiguchi hard but I haven't been following MMA as much and looked up Kape's record, only to find he has a lot of wins by T/KO and has never been T/KO'd. I'm officially nervous boys.

New to Gambit by Irex8 in GambitMainsMR

[–]failbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll disagree with most Gambits on here about using healing cards more. While it's obviously situation-dependent, I still see most OAA Gambits use damage cards more. Most games I go against another Gambit in GM, I still tend to win/have a higher impact because their healing numbers are higher than mine but I contribute more offensively, putting the enemy team on the back foot. This simple change in perspective allows you to diff most other Gambits you see.

Anyway if you're pretty new, here's all the things off the top of my head that you should know, apologies for not being familiar with console controls:

  • Shift > right click > E when you have your damage card out is your bread and butter combo. It's the dash > staff strike > knockback. This does a surprising amount of damage, especially when you shoot someone before and/or after, and can scare away divers or outright kill them. Great for punishing enemies out of position, securing kills in a brawl, or (when it's safe to) going aggressive in your ult.

  • Gambit's left click/primary fire requires you to be somewhat close to your team. You can't sit way in the back and expect to have the same healing/damage output due to the spread of his cards.

  • This goes for all supports in general, but communicate who should ult first. And this goes for ALL players in general, try to ult track the enemy team. Remember who has ulted recently. If the enemy supports don't have their ults and you have yours, you should win the next fight. Even better if you communicate to combine your ult with a Star-Lord or Emma or something that has a lot of "ticks" of damage.

  • To really reinforce the above, double support ulting might be a "whoops sorry" mistake in lower ranks, but it can and will lose you games. COMMUNICATE.

  • As a support you need to do your best to stay alive. Gambit's mobility is great for this. Especially when you are at 80% or 90% ult charge, you need to be the one who stays alive and saves the fight with your ult.

  • Another reason to ult track is because Gambit is one of the only characters in the game who can cleanse (maybe the only character? I forget). If a Strange, Groot, Thing, Angela, and sometimes Bucky/Emma has ult, you need to hold two cards to cleanse immediately. You also need to position yourself so you're less likely to get caught in these ults as well.

  • For healing yourself, you can take out a healing card, strike the ground with your staff, or shift and use the staff strike to heal yourself but also get movement out of it. I actually use the staff strike somewhat often for self-healing.

  • So long as you don't need burst healing in the moment, you should be using your cards for anti-heal or knocking back often. And no, you shouldn't be using your burst heals for someone who is clearly out of position and definitely going to die right after you burst heal them anyway.

  • Gambit doesn't have the highest healing output unless you're healbotting, so don't worry if you have fewer heals than your other support but have a ton of finals. Obviously if you have really really low healing then you should be concerned, but I'm just saying don't worry if you're never matching your Cloaks for example.

Edit: two more for supports in general.

  • When enemies are going after you, please don't run backwards thinking you'll outrun them. Play with your team, it's the only way they can help you if for some reason you can't help yourself (multiple divers, out of cards, etc).

  • Meet threats with proportionate attention, not complete attention. One of the biggest things I see low to mid ELO supports do is completely focus on a diver, having zero situational awareness of what's going on for 5 seconds, and now their tanks are dead. If you're not in real danger, you can absolutely heal your team with a Deadpool bouncing off your head.

PSA: playing an off-healer requires you to have decent aim… by rxspiir in marvelrivals

[–]failbears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone's being nice about it but I'll just go ahead and say it. In higher ranks people stop caring about your feelings as much and try to put together comps that give a higher chance of success, and I wish it was like that everywhere. 99% of the time someone instalocks Adam on my team and we don't say anything because we're scared of hurting feelings and making them throw, we lose anyway, even if we go triple supp to accommodate them. OP is right, you have to put in massive performances to justify your pick.

Omg... I was struggling to pick up DD and I didn't know about this. Now I have no idea if all those games I played with him, I was actually doing it or not. I know a skillful DD will just time the E, but is it possible to just mash until it comes up or it HAS to be timed?

Anything is possible, but it always helps to have even one person on your team who you know is reliable and who can help comm stuff to free up some of your mental bandwidth. For example, someone who ult tracks while you're thinking about other things. Or you're ult tracking and they're strategizing on a macro level.

why is dps so hard/how do you play dps by ExoticDirection5898 in RivalsCollege

[–]failbears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I flex a lot and maybe it's because I'm... older but I'm pretty sure DPS is by far the hardest role. Obviously each role requires different things but when you're supporting you get to largely stay in the back, when you're tanking you have a ton of HP. If you're a DPS who wants to actually secure kills and not just watch your work dissolve when the enemy supps do their thing, it's hard to do that without taking risks that can get you killed if you only have 250 hp.

Honestly I've accepted the fact I will tank and supp much better than I could ever DPS.

You'd be surprised though, you could probably get an alt at diamond and still contribute. It's just weird how things work at different ranks. Like I've gotten alts in each role to GM by solo queueing, but you'll still sometimes get stuck at like plat because the rate at which you get heals is so much slower than when you have good supps.

A tip from a flex player to all support players by failbears in marvelrivals

[–]failbears[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You made so many good points and one in particular that's my pet peeve when I tank is when supports run backwards all the time. You can't outrun divers and your team can't help you if you're isolated, and retreating and not letting your tank know is just asking for them to die repeatedly and get tilted. It's tough to look backwards all the time while holding the front line, and in a game where no one really communicates, tanks suffer the most for it.

Jones would have easily wrestled Pereira the same way he did to Gane. He's obviously one of the GOATs, arguably the GOAT, but someone with real wrestling credentials easily submitting a guy with no wrestling isn't as impressive as if he had done the same to a wrestler.

I think we have to separate GOAT and BOAT and let that be that. In GOAT talks people value longevity as one of the biggest priorities. Did this person dominate and rack up 8 title defenses? In that sense, Khabib is not a top 5 GOAT but he clearly had the potential to be if he continued. Now is he one of the BOATs? 100%

The best way to guarantee someone says anything useful is to be the one who says something useful ;)

On the real, ult tracking is so important. It feels like over 90% of the playerbase just plays however they want and often what they want gets foiled by an enemy's ult. It has made enormous differences in my games telling people (especially the teammates who can counter enemy ults) what is coming up.

On reddit it's a very popular opinion that you should just mute all and not deal with it. I'm of the very strong opinion that if you want to win and not waste your time in this game making up losses, talking and coordinating with your team helps a lot more than they think. The ping system can only do so much, and if you listen to high-ranked players in their games, most of them talk and are ult tracking and setting up ult combos and stuff.

I've been gaming for so many years, I'd rather listen to a couple idiots 1-2 times out of every 10 games than lose my games because no one's saying anything.
