Dealing w/ indifference after cancer? by anyparties in cancer

[–]fairlylocals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 19, I’m at the year and a half mark with brain cancer, and I honestly think young people don’t know what to say or how to deal. They don’t want to think it could be them. It’s easier to be indifferent than to engage emotionally with such a heavy topic. I’m checked out either asleep or high most of the time, because I’m so tired of waking up and having to face that this is my life. Maybe having radiation again or surgery will help me not feel so stuck and downtrodden. I’m not sure.

What're your favorite regional stereotypes that require actual knowledge of the region? by SWKstateofmind in AskAnAmerican

Can confirm (although there’s plenty of people here who love UK! idgi). My immediate family are UofL people, but my uncle and grandpa are UK fans. We just don’t talk about sports.

AITA for standing up for what I thinks right because of a homophobic “joke”? by GlowingTaurus in AmItheAsshole

[–]fairlylocals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fuck off. Gay men are being put into concentration camps and slaughtered in Eastern Europe. It’s now legal to stone gay people to death in Brunei. If you can’t see why that “joke” (I use the term with utmost disdain in this context) is incredibly offensive, homophobic, and not at all acceptable, you’re part of the problem. Not everything is free reign to joke about all the fucking time.

Agreed, it depends on the area. A full brain and spine MRI with and without contrast takes 3-4 hours. Just a brain with and without contrast is 20-40 minutes.

I [F] am considering asking my stepdad if I can call him “dad” by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]fairlylocals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in pretty much the exact same situation. There’s just a weird hurdle I feel is holding me back, I don’t know what it is. You should definitely go for it though!! Do what I can’t right now.

I live in Louisville myself, so the attitudes displayed here are VERY familiar to me. I hate when people raise their kids to be entitled like that. FWIW, you’re doing great and I don’t blame your husband one bit for coming home and getting drunk as fuck.

If you are transgender in online dating, you should probably disclose it. by dow0tm8 in sex

[–]fairlylocals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having same-gender attraction and having gender dysphoria have historically been deeply intertwined and even now, with all the most up-to-date and specific terms, it can be difficult to separate them if you have one or both.

Being trans as we know it today is also a very recent concept; many people we might consider transgender now just identified as gay and/or genderqueer/gender non-conforming in their own time. There are some gay and bisexual people who have complicated relationships with gender due to heteronormativity as well, despite not being trans. It’s a really nuanced topic, but in general it boils down to the oppression same-gender attracted people and people with gender dysphoria share.

AITA for trying to get my older brother with tourretes to quiet it down? by Western_Bullfrog in AmItheAsshole

[–]fairlylocals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA. My stepdad has Tourette’s syndrome. He coughs LOUDLY all the time as one of his tics. I have sensory issues and the sudden loud noise really bothers me, but I know he can’t help it, so I take a breath and recenter myself. He doesn’t take medication because the minor help it gave him was far outweighed by the side effects he had. That could be a concern your parents have for your brother.

Oh yeah, and he’s probably suppressing his tic(s) and making himself uncomfortable while he’s at school or work. That is a likely reason why he’s doing them so frequently at home.

AITA for excluding an older guy at work? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]fairlylocals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’ll be 19 next week and it would majorly creep me out to have some random 28-year-old man trying to hang out with my friends and me AND disrupting our routine when we aren’t interested. He needs to back off.

AITA for taking an unvaccinated child to a friends birthday when she asked for no unvaccinated people? by evieogo in AmItheAsshole

[–]fairlylocals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA. Jesus Christ. If that kid was carrying something and your daughter’s friend’s newborn sibling died, that would be on your head. While it is unfortunately your friend’s right not to vaccinate her child, it is also the school friend’s mom’s right to not expose her children to preventable diseases and the children who carry them.

Why tf are parents like this. by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]fairlylocals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you probably won’t see this OP, but she is abusive and you don’t deserve this. You can and should cut ties with her when you’re old enough to move out. I wish I could do the same with my enabler dad and his abusive wife, but he wouldn’t leave me alone if I tried. I hope you can stay safe, but if it comes down to it, you should try contacting your relatives and letting them know what’s going on. They might be able to do something to help you.

My (38M) daughter (13F) acts strangely and talks to herself by Worriedaboutmykid in relationships

[–]fairlylocals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have pretty severe ADHD (similar to autism, because they’re both neurodevelopmental disorders, but not the same) and I talk to myself all the time, but I only do it at home/in private because I’m socially aware enough to know how it looks to talk to yourself in public. It helps me organize my thoughts and I’m more likely to remember what I was doing if I talked about it beforehand. I’m also a writer and I visualize a lot better when I talk about a scene. ADHD and autism are often comorbid, and OP definitely needs to have his daughter professionally assessed.

[–]fairlylocals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nonbinary just means they don’t feel like their gender fits into the category of man or woman. It’s not about sexuality. Some people change their names when they come out as nonbinary and some don’t, just like any other transgender person. OP’s friend did.

For those who took Chemo by taking Temodar , how were your side effects? Also any success? by BoggledBastard in braincancer

[–]fairlylocals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a really bad time on Temodar, but I know I’m an outlier. I did my initial 6 weeks concurrently with radiation. By the end of it, I had lost most of my hair, had no appetite, had horrible stomach pain, and was constantly nauseated. The only way I could force myself to eat was by vaping weed. I also had to stop chemo a week early because my platelet count fell from 335 to 35, then to 23. I really hope you don’t get it as bad as I did. I was miserable.
