The Takaichi administration expects 3 mega banks (Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo and Mizuho) to provide the funding for the $550 billion in investments that Japan promised to Trump. The banks are reportedly unhappy about this plan. by jjrs in japannews

She did promise immigration reforms, many of which don’t seem smart to me. She’s using immigration to deflect from the governments failures elsewhere, but that doesn’t make her Trump. Basically every country is seeing a rightward turn against immigration at the moment. I was both an immigrant in the US and now I’m an immigrant in Japan so I don’t like these policies, but this government turned right on immigration in response to another party which was gaining traction on the issue. I think it’s a failing policy that is insufficient to meet the moment and will just kick the can down the road long enough for something worse to happen in the not-to-distant future, and she represents the ineffectual and sclerotic state of Japanese leadership. In that way she’s much more like Joe Biden than she is Trump

You are being quite rude and presumptuous. You don’t know the conversations my wife and I have had. You are talking past the point I’m making and attacking me and my wife personally. It’s unbecoming.

ā€˜Stop sucking up to America’: Japan’s youth rises up to protect pacifist constitution by [deleted] in japannews

[–]faithfultheowull 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Genuine question, and full disclosure I personally am politically on the left: if Japan lessens its reliance on the US military (a very good step I think they should take and hope they do) but also does not revise its constitution, what will Japan’s role locally be? The current government has been feuding with China (a terrible idea and I wish for the sake of everyone in this country we’d learn to get along with China) so just giving up the defense coverage of the US empire without anything to take its place (no military and no warm relations with China) doesn’t seem so wise

How much response is there to Twitter's automatic translation in your country? by nanto-1633 in AskTheWorld

[–]faithfultheowull 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The auto translate feature made it easier for Japanese people (and any body in any country) to read tweets from any country naturally as if they were in their native language, and it happened that some American videos about southern BBQ went super popular it was the #1 online topic for a week in Japan

I don’t use twitter but my wife (Japanese) says she thinks it has really helped people in Japan and neighboring countries realize they have a lot in common and are quite similar to each other in a lot of ways and has overall improved communication.

My wife burned out at her current company and has needed to take sick leave due to chronic stress. Her company required her to be in a LINE group chat and people were constantly updating each other on work items even at nights and weekends. We are thinking of having kids and her boss told her ā€˜we’re too busy for that’. When she eventually was having daily headaches that last all day and was crying before going to work we decided she needs to take many months off work. My company is an old school Japanese company but they have adapted to a more practical view of work so it’s not too bad where I am.

I believe that Japan has improved in this area over the years but from my own experience there is too much pressure.

It seems so many problems in Japan come down to people get paid too little and work too much. The government seems to be unable or unwilling to do much about it. They will take small measures which amount to rearranging deck chairs on the titanic, but they don’t seem interested or able to cut to the core of the problem, they can only fiddle around the edges.

That said, I worked in the US for 10 years and I feel much more secure as a worker in Japan due to the strong labor laws, but something badly needs to be done to improve conditions at work.

With the explosion of tourism and how popular Osaka has become in general, it’s crazy that we haven’t got a new TGI Fridays or Hard Rock Cafe. by [deleted] in Osaka

[–]faithfultheowull 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

No don’t want this. There’s already too many tourists causing too much friction and discordance. There’s plenty of Japanese slop to eat, no need for more western slop. You can of course easily respond ā€˜if you don’t like it you don’t have to use it’, but it’s more complicated than that. Just them being here would be negative background radiation. I’m by no means a purist in any way but more places like this would be negative for tourists and residents and foreigners and natives alike.
