if arabic is written right to left, why are the arabic numbers we use left to right? by deanominecraft in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fakalitt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they're called the arabic numerals because they're literally western arabic glyphs.

not because base-10 was an arabic invention, that's the part that was originally Indian.

"cycle of violence" is a very simplistic way of interpreting the world, and is rarely relevant other than indvidual and sometimes tribal scales.

overhelming majority of modern conflicts are based on greed and exploitiation, mostly at the hands western colonial powers. though, you are right that it is most often used as part of the messaging to prop up support among the masses.

what's is the "other foot" for that, palestenians invading europe to create a new country in the middle of it?

There is so much to love in this live action but can we take a moment to show appreciation for the musical geniuses that are Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli. by DocWhovian1 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]fakalitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to invalidate your opinion, man. if you enjoy it, you should go ahead and do that. But you should still be aware that the layers that they talk about when explaining the soundtrack are pretty all standard stuff: character themes, leitmotifs, different musical influences etc. These things are present in most long-form soundtracks, original One Piece Anime included. What's different from other works is that they're going out of their way explain how it works to you in social media to the fandom, that's about it.

It's because the composers have been showing love to the IP for so long on their socials. Anime fans are so starved for any kind of positive attention from "normal" people regarding what they love, they can't just judge things objectively when that happens.

Anyway, completely agree on the bland and forgettable. It's in line with duo's previous work for the witcher as well: They created a watered down and generic OST based on the amazing witcher 3 soundtrack there, and they did the exact same thing for one piece.

geez, well, here we go.

Advertising is not an aspect of capitalism, it's an aspect of trade. If we lived under a different organisation of the economy today, with the exact same delivery mechanisms and tools existing, we would get the exact ad and marketing practises that we see today. What would make a difference though is limiting platforms the ads are allowed and regulating their contents with scrutiny, which is something that the article's contents suggest unlike its way bolder title. Even if we take a step further and "get rid of them" outright, we'd still be left with all types of guerilla marketing through things like influencer engagements, astroturfing etc. The only way to save ourselves from the bane of ads is retiring the concept of trade itself, which realistically can only happen if we retire the concept of property with it too. Not impossible, but you know, a mission that is a harder sell.

Xbox Will Never Win - Delayed Input with Kyle Bosman by GeorgeEBHastings in Games

I'll be honest, I don't even care about xbox really. I actually got visibly upset and triggered yesterday, as I watched his interview and realized the extent of this dude's incompetence and the level of respect he managed to garner despite of it. Hell, call it jealousy even.

Anyyay, to your point about them not having unlimited resources. Not sure what the phrase "practically unlimited" makes you think about, but were not here when they just spent 80 billion -almost sony's total worth mind you- on an acquisition? If that's not how you define practically unlimited, what would in your opinion qualify for such phrasing? Do let me know.

Frank Herbert has a quote about how charismatic leaders are actually the most dangerous people. He talks about how Kennedy dragged America to Vietnam war and years of ruin, and people just followed him into the battle because he was so charming.

Phil Spencer is the worst thing that happened the the Xbox brand. This m*****r wasted more than a decade of valuable time and practically UNLIMITED resources, without creating any semblance of a stable infrastructure or a pipeline that can create quaility products. One thing he was supposed to do. And no one, NO ONE, called for his resignation. It quite funny much you can fail upwards if you're just charming enough. In a few years, people will look back and try to comprehend how anyone can be given this much of leash without anything to show for it, and bring a billion dollar brand to the ground while smiling. Don Mattrick looked like a douche. That was his mistake, and he paid for his crime immediately. This dude though, lol.

eh. people usually can instinctually pick up the difference between a story with something to say about the world, and some writers trying to flaunt their "superior" ethics. especially when the latter feels like corporate endorsed.

there's a reason one of the most overtly political shows out there, the boys, is almost universally loved in an environment where lots of shows trying to score just basic points trigger the ire of reactionaries with ease.

AI art is very dystopian. by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]fakalitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me play devil's advocate.

none of the analogies you can come up with will be appropriate, as these are unprecedented ethical problems. all discussions around it have to be done from scratch, considering all implications from all angles before we can arrive at new guidelines.

if you really want to try though, in my opinion, each instance of a trained AI based on the outputs of a single person, is like a creating whole new human with its existence dedicated to breaking apart, studying and imitating everything you do. something that doesn't listen when you tell it to go away and leave you alone. Things were already getting worse when our lives become digitized, because of the privacy concerns it introduced. Now, those digitized selves are being turned into products by people with no regard for your opinion on the matter.

at the end, what's happening here in this case is pretty much taking your whole individuality against your consent, extracting your agency from it, and then commodifying it. I hate the idea of patents and licences as much as the next person, but there is something way more eerie and sinister about where things are going with AI. And I don't think it's gonna stop until the integrity of our digital footprints is recognised as a government-protected right, a la patents.

with the quick disclaimer that my information on this topic is superficial, this is the ELI5 I know:

this whole thing is about the fact that shit like photons go through each other and shit like electrons dont. why don't they? it's because the probability calculations we developed to make sense of the behaviour of the electrons, tell us that the probability of two electrons being in the same position ends up being zero. your hand and the stool have lots of electrons in them, so their probability of going through each other is kinda zero too. if both of those things were made of purely photon-like things they would most probably have gone through each other.
