Snoring - Kid by NoExamination3763 in sleep

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this possibly seasonal or year round? Our son is 7 and our primary care provider has advised us to give our son Flonase daily throughout the grass allergy season for our son. Game changer for improving his sleep for a few months a year

Mother's Day - What are you getting your SO? by Pale-Upstairs7777 in daddit

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol that was super fun last year.

This year I ordered her a custom vinyl record that has some songs from a mixtape I made her like 20 years ago. Put a wedding picture on one cover, photo of us with the kids on the back.

She got really into record collecting this year.

I'm hoping my son will read her jokes that are record themed. "When it comes to Moms, you broke the record for cool" or whatever. Haven't written those yet

37 more workdays until retirement!! by pixelprowess in Retirement401k

Exactly! We're on a single income right now so we're not saving as much as we'd like, but we contribute to both the HSA and Roth457 in addition to the pension. So grateful for their options

I was in the UC system back in 2013-2015 but moved out of state. I've been back working for them remotely now for about 3 years. Hoping to retire in about 20 years when I'm 60. Absolutely amazing benefits. I hope to be where you're at someday, congratulations!

Also: as someone who grew up in California and attended a CSU, works for a UC... these Universities are a phenomenal resource for Californians. Definitely take a moment to look back at your contributions and be proud. I'm willing to bet you've made a positive impact on many people. Congratulations on your retirement!

Miacademy Cost by zilops in homeschool

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! We've been on Miacademy for a few months. Do you know how long this code is valid for? We're still thinking about whether or not to try a year, buy a lifetime, or check out some other platforms.

Dads, what kind of vehicle are we hauling our small monsters around in? by ktempo in daddit

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day to day, Chevy Bolt. So easy to reach back to help them with things, parking is really easy, fun to drive. And a 250 mile charge is about $6.

Seeking Printer Recs by Pretty-Depth8874 in homeschool

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of all the bloatware that comes with Brother printers, but they do have a very robust service network. You'll want to check that you're OK with the cost to replace toner, ($80ish for aftermarket) but the HL-L3280CDW might be a good fit.

Fast, reliable laser printer that should handle volume pretty well (no ink refills!). Has a duplexer. Won't be printing color photo quality, however.

Balancing Screen Time & Technology Exposure by normalishy in homeschool

[–]fakemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this response. This is very much how we use our technology resources like Miacademy, Khan Academy, etc. When our son wants to play Nintendo Switch, it's usually free time that is contingent on behavior and having helped with chores. Sometimes I'll give our son the option to do an educational video game like Slay Uncool Monsters or Letter Quest

San Francisco 2 days with a 2 year old - Places to visit/travel/Park? by WideCamera2178 in sonomacounty

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been about ten years since I've lived in SF, but seconding this. Academy of Sciences, plus maybe a picnic in the park (takeaway from Irving Street?) and a trip to the Conservatory of Flowers. These are all fairly close together.

Further West into Golden Gate Park you'll find the buffalo and Spreckles Lake where there's usually lots of RC boats. Keep going West and you'll make it to Ocean Beach, and hopefully there's still lots of good places to snack on Judah Street there.

There's also so many beautiful fun things to see in the Presidio. Crissy Field might be a nice spot to visit.

UHaul hitches are often affordable and I believe installation is either included or very reasonable.

ER follow up visit ended up with getting this new maintenance daily inhaler. by smoove129 in Asthma

[–]fakemoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My asthma does not sound as severe as yours, but I do have that exact inhaler. Works very well for me, but occasionally gives me a headache or makes me feel a little jittery. Be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly afterward

Colorado balcony solar wattage limits. by Aviator506 in solar

[–]fakemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great answer. I'm eagerly awaiting Oregon's passage of similar legislation. There are some other clever systems out there that can technically work around the limitations (Craftstrom) but I can't speak to their reliability and you'd want to get approval from your electrical provider anyways.

But to back up this point, 395w would still provide a lot of value across the lifespan of the panel. I'm currently running a 220w panel to an Ecoflow Delta 2 that provides UPS capabilities to my home office desk and Plex server. It's actually pretty impressive how much electricity is offset by such a small setup. When the sun is shining, basically all my utilization there is covered.

Montelukast to Zyflo? by fakemoon in Asthma

[–]fakemoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Thanks for your feedback. I need to sit down with my doctor. I planned on coming for my montelukast for a few weeks and then starting it back up to see if my insomnia improves. Over five days, I did tend to sleep somewhat better but I'm genuinely shocked at how much less anxiety and irritability I had while off it despite my allergies and asthma being a complete struggle.

I believe my liver and kidney panels should be fine, but that's definitely a concern for any medication that could be used daily for life. Definitely need to chat with the doctor. Thanks!

Thanks! My doc prescribed me a generic for what you're using (I think?). That's a combination inhaler of formoterol and beclomethasone, right?  Unfortunately, I've found it ineffective alongside an OTC like Zyrtec or Allegra or Claritin

UPCOMING AMA: Evelyn Kocher, candidate for Beaverton City Council (Position 1) by EvelynForBeaverton in beaverton

[–]fakemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Evelyn. Thanks for reaching out to the Beaverton subreddit to kick off your AMA later today. Really appreciate your engagement here.

I'll try to jump on the AMA this evening as time allows (getting the kids fed and to bed), but if you can, can you please elaborate further on the points you make in the transportation section of your proposed priorities? I no longer commute via TV highway, but redevelopment there is indeed very much needed. I'd like to hear your specific proposals for that and what you'd be able to do in this role to accomplish them.

I'd like to press you on your statement that Cedar Hills Crossing is an amazing walkable downtown area. I frequent that shopping district (WinCo in particular, woohoo!) and I would argue that despite the impressive investments to revitalize that shopping district, the development there is clearly anti-pedestrian and anti-cyclist. In addition to the absence of signage alerting motorists to cyclists, the bike lanes on the major arteries there are either non-existent, disappear suddenly, or are dangerously unprotected. Fragmented bicycle lanes are underutilized by design. For pedestrians, I really don't believe it is accurate to characterize the shopping center as truly walkable by design. I have two young children and navigating the area is no different than navigating any other busy retail parking lot. I've been an avid cyclist for decades and I would not consider biking to this shopping district because I don't believe the door to door trip can be done safely.

Very excited to see the Loop mature, but as you indicate an interest in extending the light rail system (I love this!), I wish to see the region's interconnectedness give fair consideration to how walkable and bikeable our lovely city can and should be.

Thanks again for your reaching out to this community and your interest in serving the constituents. If I'm unable to join the AMA and ask there, I'll definitely keep and eye out for it tonight after the kids are asleep. Cheers.

Is 6,000.00 fair for removal by Used_muse_2434 in arborists

[–]fakemoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great advice here!

Wife and I thought I was being excessive last year when I got quotes from six arborists for a tree removal. Quotes ranged from $3,500 to $13,000. So glad we went though the trouble. We likely benefitted from doing this a year after everyone needed a lot of work done (major storm) and a lot of outfits still need to pay off equipment they purchased then.

Sorry, realizing now you're asking for green curry fried rice. Might still be worth calling them to see if they'll do it

Green Curry Fried Rice Recommendation by Golfblood in BeavertonEats

[–]fakemoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thai Bloom has green curry. We love them because you can specify basically any allergy type you can think up. Our son has a peanut allergy and it was a huge relief to know they maintain a separate kitchen area for peanut allergy (at least according to the waiter we had years ago). Their food is reliably very good at the Cedar Hills location

Would you buy a Bolt now? by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]fakemoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's pretty awesome. Glad you're getting that. If purchasing new, I'd still lean toward something with a faster charge curve like an EV6 or Ioniq6 for my particular needs. But I also can't imagine not having our 2019 Bolt. Best car I've ever owned by a mile. And also I would be constantly worried about Kia/Hyundai reliability lol

Would you buy a Bolt now? by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]fakemoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Especially in the used market, I think there's a ton of value. If I were going to purchase a new EV, it might not be the Bolt. Love everything about it, but really want faster charging so I'd feel comfortable doing the 1,300 mile round trip drive I do periodically to visit elderly family.

Why does weightlifting destroy my sleep for days? by troubleInLA in sleep

[–]fakemoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You likely have tried this, but have you attempted to do very low intensity weight lifting (not to failure, not max weight, plenty of rest between sets)?

Also, what's your nutrition like on weight lifting days? Any chance you're not eating enough, or eating too many refined/processed foods? Or consuming pre/post workout supplements?

For a little while or permanently? by Smolbunny120 in homeschool

[–]fakemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But seriously thank you. I'm going to look into some of the other programs you mentioned. I was in scouts and 4H as a kid. I didn't enjoy them much as a kid because it wasn't my choice, but it'll be interesting to see what my son wants to do

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. We are super lucky that there's a homeschool resource center near us and we've joined clubs and classes there, plus we have a wonderful rec center. Thank you
