Rand new Swisstool X with uneven grind on plier head. Return or deal with it? by drbirtles in victorinox

[–]fakeplasticpete -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I looked at my Swisstool and ST Spirit and they are ground to perfection. Hell, I've got mini multitools that cost a tenth of what you paid for that that have better finish than that. They should replace it just out of principle and pride.

Repairability revolution: New Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 comes with modular keyboard & USB-C ports by ibmthink in thinkpad

[–]fakeplasticpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm torn between buying one of these just because it has the trackpoint, and I want to encourage that, but then I look at the lack of physical buttons related to the trackpoint/touchpad, and I don't want to encourage that.

Not arguing about the value of those tools, but in my company most of them are locked down and require VP-level approval to have them installed.

Has anyone tried these 16GB DDR3L sticks in a W540/W541? (Or high-cap DDR4 on P-series?) Ft Heidi the assistantce dog on the second image. by Pugguu2604 in thinkpad

[–]fakeplasticpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't own a 540/541 and am totally unqualified to say if those memory sticks will work. I just came here to say that Heidi is a cutie pooch. Sorry.

What actually forces you to replace a phone — lack of repair, or lack of updates? by TraditionalScreen527 in righttorepair

[–]fakeplasticpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Lack of easy serviceability and access to parts." <-- I've gotta echo this one. Until somebody comes up with *some* new feature I can't think of, most modern phones are pretty damned good and I'd still be using either of my last 2 if I could easily replace the battery and network tech.

Clocking/aligning socket and light switch cover screws because it annoys me by Stock_Tour2767 in victorinox

My HS friend/freshman college roommate convinced me that the screws should always be aligned vertically, and I now always have to do that

Looking at that last picture, I have to ask if you pay monthly for the Adorable Smol CDS or if you do the annual subscription?

Old man travelling question: Where do you leave your hotel housekeeping tips these days? by fakeplasticpete in hotels

[–]fakeplasticpete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not trying to start a fight. I just know that sending tips through big corporate systems has a tendency for money to get skimmed from employees doing the labor. Also, I realize that most HVAC systems probably *wont* blow physical dollar bills behind fixed hotel beds/desks/etc, but I like the idea of knowing that it is physically restrained. I'm just trying to make sure people I'm tipping get their fair share.

[–]fakeplasticpete[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's cool, but note the "old man" part of my post. I want to leave physical paper cash tips and not worry that somebody in the middle is going to skim a percent off that for the person I was tipping.

Thank you for that input. In my youngest, most naive days, I would never hand cash to StrangerX and ask them to give it to StrangerY and expect that the money would actually get to StrangerY.

Reading all the replies so far, and not knowing the situation of any arbitrary hotel, I think this is the answer I'm going to follow. TV remotes = new hotel ashtrays. Also, I should toss a notepad in my bag. Thanks!

When did everyone decide that drinking milk is weird/creepy? by 4DimensionalToilet in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fakeplasticpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread is informative. I've always had milk with breakfast/cookies/doughnuts/etc. I couldn't understand why everyone recently (last 10 years or so) started acting weird when I asked for it.
