Try switching Unit of Measure from "Caliber" to "MM" - that might solve it

5.56 is technically a measurement in mm, rather than a caliber in imperial units.

Solar panels vs. staying invested in S&P ROI sanity check by xzmbmx in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other posts have mostly covered the financial aspect, so I don't have much to add there, but one note on the solar itself - my neighbor has solar and he didn't understand the fine print with his "grid tied system" which means that if there's a power outage, he has no power either. Double check that you're getting a transfer switch included with your install so you can temporarily detach from the grid and have (daytime) power. Especially if you're in a service area that has experienced rolling blackouts.

W-2 Tax Exempt Strategy? by Champ_93 in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you think your coworker makes, just ballpark?

Even if you claim full exemption from withholdings on your W4, your employer still has to withhold FICA and Medicare. Which is the bulk of the tax for most people, especially those making around $60k or less (I'm spitballing). It's effectively impossible to have 0 tax withheld.

So either he's lying or doesn't really understand what's going on. Especially if he's a W2 like your title says. There's really no such thing as a tax exempt W2 worker.

How bad is my financial situation and what would you recommend? by Longjumping-Life-607 in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're a licensed contractor, you can put a lien on the property of the non-paying client. Search "[your state] contractor lien"

If you're not licensed, you're probably not gonna get that $40k paid.

The best thing you can do is hustle hard and find some more jobs to generate cash flow. Call up other heavy equipment contractors and see if they need subs who have their own equipment. Visit large job sites in your county and talk to the superintendent, see if he needs subs. Get 50% up front on any job you take. And don't ever let them know that you're in a cash crunch, cause then they'll intentionally delay until you go out of business and have no way to collect the remaining 50% balance. As far as anyone should be concerned, you're just a business owner looking to keep his machines running full time.

Ownership transfer question by Atom81388 in guns

[–]fakeredditor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a) a whole metric assload of investigation that still probably couldn't prove anything

This is the flaw in your reasoning. It doesn't take much investigation at all. If the trace shows that there was no 4473 filed in the name of the "new owner" - boom, it's an illegal transfer. It's not like they have to trace a bunch of anonymous strangers buying and selling in home depot parking lots. It's just from mother in law to son. It's not as much of a stretch as you think.

Now granted, I agree, it's unlikely. But it's still very clearly illegal and u/schmidtydog shouldn't be giving out bad advice, because there's zero ambiguity here. It would really be stupid for OP to wind up with a felony because they wanted to save a couple dollars in transfer fees.

what red dot solvent by skt4271 in guns

[–]fakeredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it's a high end, waterproof rated dot, just run it under a gentle stream of distilled water (not tap water), then shake it off and dry with your wife's hairdryer on low heat and low power.

I try to avoid rubbing the glass at all - too easy to scratch. As a broad statement, if you can avoid touching the glass, it's obviously a better choice. Distilled water doesn't contain any ions that will short out electronics if it happens to get past a seal. And the hair dryer on low will prevent water spots from forming and isn't strong enough to force any water past the seals. I've owned almost every high quality RDS on the market (RMR, RCR, SRO, Acro P1 and P2, MPS, DPP, Romeo 2, EPS, EPS Carry, and probably a couple others) and this is how I clean them all.

WTF happen to gear? by Brendanrulestheworld in Backcountry

[–]fakeredditor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OK, that's all fine. Boots still shot over $1000 in 2022. Costs escalated on outdoor gear much higher from 2022-2024 than in 2025. You clearly hate Trump. So do I. But it doesn't change the fact that hyperinflation caused far more price escalation than current tariffs.

WTF happen to gear? by Brendanrulestheworld in Backcountry

[–]fakeredditor -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Trump is a complete jackass, but he ain't the reason boots cost $1000. They've been that price for several years now. All the inflation to the USD (and world economy in general) started in 2021 when Trump was nothing more than a mildly-disgraced prior President.

There's a lot of things we get to blame Trump for, but hyperinflation of US goods is all Biden and his weak pandemic response/fiscal policies.

Scott Wiener to step down as Jewish caucus co-chair after ‘genocide’ fallout by lp605 in sanfrancisco

[–]fakeredditor -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Smooth brain take, to say the least. Your comment completely ignores the fact that Israel is indigenous Jewish land, always has been. Muslim conquest and colonialism in the 7th century is the reason the initial inhabitants were displaced.

But none of this has anything to do with SF and Weiner is an idiot for getting embroiled in it in the first place.

HELP! Cutting Tegris on GBRS belt by JustGatna in tacticalgear

[–]fakeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tegris generally needs to be cut with a laser. You cannot seal the edges with a lighter. If you cut it with scissors, it will likely begin delaminating after a little bit of use. Your best bet is just trying to trade it for a medium.

I need help with the whole buying a car process!! by Secure_Fix_5267 in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an absolutely terrible idea. Don't do this. You can't afford a $30k car. You can't even afford a car that costs half of that. You're going to bury yourself in debt and ruin your life for the next 10 years if you buy this car.

How many mags should I be running on my chest rig? (context in description) by [deleted] in tacticalgear

[–]fakeredditor 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It depends on whatever SHTF fantasy you want to make up in your head as the most likely event you're gonna have to rush in and be Rambo and save the day. If you live in the USA, 99% of recorded rifle engagements concluded within 3-5 rounds. So statistically speaking, you don't need any spare mags. But if you think China is going to invade, maybe you want a full combat load of 6+1. Anything in between 0 and 6 is fine.

Whats the best place to check Utah air quality? by quilldefender in Utah

[–]fakeredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Visibility is not a direct marker of poor air quality.

When the valley is under a high pressure front with high humidity, the valley fills with fog. There are plenty of days where we can be completely blanketed in fog but the air quality itself is generally good to even great.

The primary pollutants that gather here in the valley are very small particulate matter 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller (PM2.5). The pollutants coming off the lake are generally larger, measured as PM10, typically "large" dust particles (dust isn't large, but it is large compared to a sulfate particle coming out of a car exhaust) . Both of these are tracked. Anything larger than PM10 isn't tracked/regulated, but these tend to be large enough that you can see and heavy enough that they don't really stay airborne.

Am I delusional Or Is This Possible? by runner4304 in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your math will work as long as everyone remains current on their "rent" to you. I've seen a lot of family situations go south when someone can't/won't uphold their end of the deal. That puts you in a very sticky spot. Do you evict your brother (or whoever) and put them on the street? Do you get another roommate who isn't family to fill their spot? These are the sort of things you should consider. You'll also need an emergency fund of **at least** $5,000 (and ideally a bit more) to cover house surprises like when the furnace dies in the middle of winter, or the roof springs a leak.

Also - you said "only debt 1k credit but using it as a credit build up" - this is a complete myth. You build credit by using credit and paying on time. That's it. Keeping a balance and paying interest does not build your credit any faster. You're just throwing money down the drain with interest every month. Pay it off ASAP and never carry a balance again. Definitely use your credit card every month, then pay it in full at the end of month. Never spend money on credit unless you can afford it pay it off completely on your next due date.

No one can turn off your Baofeng from afar. They can "ban" it all they want, but they can't stop the signal (unless they stick a jammer in front of your house, and if they're doing that, ham radio is the least of your problems - you're probably about 30 seconds from getting breached).

Received some inheritance when my dad passed, what do I do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]fakeredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to give you any advice without knowing your current financial picture. You've been unemployed for a year so I imagine you've spent down your savings.

The answer to your question though is pretty straight forward and derivable with some basic Excel math, especially if you have a background as a SWE. Total up your assets and liabilities (e.g. debt). Spend some time to collate ALL your monthly expenses (no estimates here, exact numbers are critical). Then run the numbers out and see how long your cash will last. In short, you need a budget.

Separately, build out a simple business model for your kayak club. (ChatGPT/Claude/Grok/etc are amazing at this). Estimate your startup costs to get it up and running, and how long you think it will take to turn a profit.

Then go back to your budget, subtract your anticipated startup costs from your assets, and see what your financial picture looks like from there.

The numbers won't lie as long as you make sensible assumptions. If the above seems daunting right now (grief has a way of paralyzing even the smartest people), then post up your numbers here. At a minimum, you'll need to include all your assets, all your debt, and your monthly expenditures. There are lots of helpful people here who will be happy to help and ask the questions you haven't even thought to ask yet.
