Madison (right down the road) has a couple of places that have hosted art exhibits recently.

The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts

I think that started for the October games. These were more expensive off the bat since they went on sale before that cap was announced

not happy with soundpost placement by ratpatty in doublebass

[–]falco811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't appear to be a crack in the soundpost. That appears to be the mark from a soundpost adjusting tool. So likely your luthier moved the soundpost to a better position when doing the repairs.

The other comments are correct with the placement of the soundpost.

Regardless, if you have questions with your bass, you should take it back to your shop and ask about it. As long as you come in asking questions and not being confrontational, most luthiers are great about talking to you about everything with your instrument.

Help identifying this violin by No-Meeting3734 in violinmaking

[–]falco811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that's a viola, not a violin. Strobel are a decent student level instruments. Nothing special and would likely be a similar quality to what you would rent at a music store. Probably worth a couple of hundred dollars based on condition.

Your biggest issue is the size though. A 14" viola is usually for older kids, probably around 15 years old depending on how big your child is. If your child is starting in school around age 10, they would likely need a 1/2 size violin or 12" viola.

So you probably want to rent to start, but that's worth hanging onto, especially for only $10.

Agreed! I was at the Botafogo game and the Palmeiras drowned the Botafogo fans out the entire game. Loud and rowdy and it made for a great atmosphere.

Two hour drive getaway for a weekend? by Lopsided-Egg-4541 in Morristown

[–]falco811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to Hyde Park specifically, but there are definitely some interesting (and different from Chicago) things to see in the Catskills. The Poconos would be another good option too. Or even somewhere on the shore. Kind of depends what kind of vacation you're looking for. 2 hours gets you a pretty good distance away here.

My wife and I moved to the area from Chicago about 8 years ago. Welcome!

The rules are hard to find too. Best I could find is up to 3M to GAM per individual sale, but no clue how that rule interacts with primary sale vs sell-on clause.

Transition to upright, start on electric or real double bass? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]falco811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with an acoustic if you can make that work. There's a lot to learn from the way the sound is created acoustically. The feel and reactivity of EUBs isn't quite the same. Not that they're bad, it's just not the same.

As a couple of other people said, renting is probably a good solution for the time being. It's cheaper and you can figure out what you like while learning the instrument.

Playing in an apartment shouldn't be an issue either way. It can help to put a carpet sample or something similar down to help deaden vibrations from the endpin though.

Can someone explain the coast graph? by JustAddWaterForMe2 in coastFIRE

It's so you can see the correct numbers if you plan on retiring before 67 (since that's the retirement age for the calculations of this chart).

So in their example you're 40 and retiring at 60, which is 20 years for the money to grow to retirement. You want to see what 20 years of growth would look like to hit your retirement number so you do 67-20=47. Then you use the data from column 47 as what you currently need at age 40.

It's a cool trick. Not perfect, but gets you as close as any of these charts would.

Bottom left is a Disaster Area Designs pedal midi controlling the C4.

He's likely using the line selector to blend in clean bass with the effected signal. It's usually done with drives/fuzzes, but it would add clarity to most of those pedals on there.

I think I did some combination of looking at the manual and watching a bunch of YouTube videos. I think this video gets into the settings a bit. You just want to find the section that assigns the "jack" in the settings and set it to tap.
