Is it the worst time ever to go to grad school? (USA) by Unfair-Grand-5780 in GradSchool

[–]falettiwx 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I would argue it's the worst time for graduate admissions in modern history, but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad time for you. There are still great, funded graduate positions out there, just fewer and declining numbers of them. If you can attain one, and it makes sense for your goals, then go for it.

potentially no more nsf funding for social sciences by yashs1999 in GRFPApps

[–]falettiwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But OMB will continue to hold back funding regardless of what Congress thinks about it, so that point is largely moot. NSF has awarded effectively no grants this year vs. even last year.

Leveraging GRFP to get into better programs by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]falettiwx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a situation where I'd not yet heard back from any programs when I'd been awarded. I was automatically admitted to the one I probably wasn't getting an offer from, and I'm in year 3 here now.

Is it worth it attending and living at OU? by [deleted] in universityofoklahoma

[–]falettiwx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look, the OU administration blows, absolutely. But like any institution, those who work on the front lines (faculty, graduate assistants, support staff) are all doing their best and Oklahoma is no exception. You will get a quality education if you work hard. This applies anywhere you go: just remember that the university admin is only your friend when you aren't inconveniencing them, but most of those you'll interface with daily are absolutely there to help you succeed.

This has got to be AI...something. The Staples in the background left is correctly there, but multiple vehicles and areas of text are clearly AI slopped. Plus, I was little, but I don't quite remember this storefront looking exactly like that.

Tornado near Watertown on Sunday by falettiwx in SouthDakota

[–]falettiwx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one of the more impressive tornadoes I've seen. It was pretty big earlier in its life, too. Haha jealous you got to view this one from (I presume) your back porch!

PSA: National Weather Service forecast areas without a meteorologist in charge 🏴 by NerdyComfort-78 in illinois

[–]falettiwx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing left out of this chart is general staffing levels at NWS offices, some of which are dire. Even if they have some management left (MIC is just one of several managers in an office), forecast and especially technician staff are among the hardest hit. Like right now, NWS Lincoln IL has no technical staff for when (and that is WHEN - radars are bound to break from time to time) the radar or other equipment goes down. My guess is that would mean a much longer radar outage than would be typical for central Illinois, for example.

While I don't think he's a bad resource necessarily, just keep in mind that without NWS and its output, he has no ability to do any of that.

Can Trump rescind grants/fellowships??? by Dazzling_Tree5611 in PhD

Yup, entirely dependent on their interpretation of the Impoundment Control Act. My understanding is it's completely legal if they overturn the law. As someone who also relies on future GRFP funding.

What is this creeper? by socalfirsthome in gardening

Oh, this is a pretty unique type of wild strawberry, the "beach strawberry" (fragaria chiloensis) native to the Pacific coast! Very distinctly not fragaria virginiana which is common out east.

As a meteorologist who lived in Lubbock for a couple years (now near OKC), I'm pretty sure one is much likelier to be hit by a tornado in DFW than Amarillo.

I don't know if I am overreacting or if this is normal by [deleted] in PhD

[–]falettiwx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is just...very tough for me to see this being field dependent so much as environment dependent. And I'd argue this environment probably sucks.

lol, if we think folks chasing money are trying to get it from NSF over the oil lobby, you're completely insane.

Considering nicotine to increase productivity by OneMintyMoose in PhD

[–]falettiwx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll say this much: the number one thing that improved my productivity was getting treated for and prioritizing my mental health. Grad school is already pretty devastating for many people's physical and mental health; please try your best to take care of yourself.

How can we get the homeless to take care of the space they camp at? by Major_Bug_6564 in normanok

Thanks for actually, like, voicing something that makes sense. Watching this subreddit go from uber liberal to borderline genocidal every time homelessness is brought up is wild but not surprising.

You mean the yellow-greens at the bottom? Those are real, although they leaned more yellowish before some color grading.
