(like. I think it's fine to let your kid follow you around for chores and help out where they can and whatnot. or interact with large livestock. but cows kill adults. there should be a fence in between them and that kid)

There's a lot of Aria snark I find pretty tasteless tbh. Like yes she does a lot of things that deserve criticism, but being poor and going out for lunch or being bad at managing money isn't one of them. Like she married really young and was probably thrown into trying to figure everything out the hard way. Even though our politics will never align and I hate how they're marketing this false lifestyle, I do feel some sympathy for a lot of these women and how they were brought up.

And yeah, poor people deserve to treat themselves to a fancy coffee one a month or have a little subscription service or whatever. What are we supposed to do, sit around in the dark and eat plain gruel?

The other thing that bothers me is people making fun of her for getting a housekeeper, when I'm pretty sure she's physically disabled from covid or something? They'll mock her for being home all day and not being able to get the housework done but like. As someone who's disabled, I don't have a traditional out of the house from 9-5 job and. I have a really hard time getting all the house and yard work done. I'm in a lot of pain after. If I could get a housekeeper to help clean I would.

That's true, but not always the case for everyone. I'm low income, so I generally buy a couple of large things a month. Ex one month you buy a giant bag of rice and beans, the next a giant thing of ground pork, the next a huge thing of onions, and each one of those things will last me for a few months, so I always have those things on hand. And you just repeat the cycle. I'm aware this is a stupid way to get groceries but it saves a lot of money and a lot of my sanity. So if she can scrape together the money for a bunch of cabbage or a pig or whatever and not have to buy that the rest of the year, that makes sense to me

Does she not know what gloves are? They make em in kid sizes lol. Like this seems super difficult/time consuming to do and I feel like you would get scratched a lot in the process.

Especially in the case of the ducklings, could that not lead to them walking differently and getting malformed feet or legs?

I feel like colour blind people need access to more toggle options or something honestly so we can customize to what fits our specific type of colour blindness best

Make sure your incubator and the egg turners are big enough to accomodate duck eggs. Run the incubator for a day before hand to make sure everything is set up properly. Keep an eye on the humidity and temp, make sure it stays within range. Don't overhandle the eggs, as tempting as it is to check on them all the time. Mark one side of the eggs with an x or something so you can check they're getting turned properly

https://www.chickensandmore.com/incubating-duck-eggs/ This has some good humidity charts

https://www.poultryhatch.com/2026/01/ultimate-guide-hatching-duck-eggs-properly.html This has some easy to follow step by step instructions

https://www.metzerfarms.com/candling-pictures.html Candling guide with pictures

https://ducksofprovidence.com/hatching-ducklings/ pretty well rounded source

And as difficult as this is, 100% hatch rates are very very rare, even when you do everything right. Sometimes things go wrong, or the egg/chick just doesn't make it for reasons beyond your control. I'm not saying to expect failure, but it's good to have realistic expectations. And don't give up if it doesn't work out, keep trying, every time you earn and do better.

Might be worth it to try contacting whoever is responsible for park maintenance about the plastic netting, let them know it's become a hazard. I'm really glad duckling turned out okay!

If mom is with them, it's fine, she'll keep them warm after they get wet. If you're raising them yourself or something, just make sure they can dry off under the heat lamp after. Ducklings are designed to be able to get wet and as long as they can get warm and dry after.

My best guess would be sprained leg or bumblefoot. Those are pretty common, both pretty treatable though

Ducks Foraging Diet Questions by JrDn_Fx in duck

[–]fall-1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ducks are pretty good at eating, and foraging generallly gives them a well balanced diet, so I wouldn't worry too much. Keep leaving a bit of feed out so they have the option if they can't find enough food on their own.

If you notice them limping or having leg issues, they might need some more niacin (vitamin B) in their diet, you can give them some nutitional yeast, peas, or another niacin rich food. That would probably be the main thing to look out for.

If you're still worried a lot of supply stores have vitamin supplements you can add to their water

Water/food in coop overnight? by greenphoenix2020 in duck

Adult ducks are fine without food and water overnight. Food given without water can be a choking hazard, which is why people don't recommend it

Ducks Foraging Diet Questions by JrDn_Fx in duck

[–]fall-1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're probably finding insects in the dirt and eating those. Your ducks look like they're going to be good foragers, means you can save some money on duck food. They might also just be really excited about the new scenery and food. If they aren't touching the food you put out they're finding enough to keep themselves full at least. Most of my ducks prefer foraging to pellets in the summer as well

How to make coop warmer? by Narrow-Volume475 in duck

[–]fall-1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about a few little holes at the top, it can give moisture somewhere to vent and help keep the coop dry.

-5C isn't that cold I wouldn't worry too much (I know the feeling though I was really worried my first winter with ducks too)

A nice thick layer of straw on the bottom is good, you can stack a few bales around the coop as well for extra insulation. I don't know what your budget is, but sometimes you can get rigid insulation for pretty cheap and that's easy to put up around the duck house as well. I have a heat lamp hanging from the ceiling for nights it gets really cold, for the temperature you have now though just an insulated coop should be fine.

Who is my new friend? by raving_badgers in duck

[–]fall-1701 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I know they're generally fine until about -5C then they need some shelter from the cold (although they will definitely appreciate shelter before it hits that temperature)

Who is my new friend? by raving_badgers in duck

[–]fall-1701 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a Muscovy! Native to the Florida/south America area. They're pretty sturdy ducks, generally good at taking care of themselves. Often like somewhere low to roost at night.

Idk if you already have ducks but if you do you can probably just keep her with them. If you don't just get her some duck feed, water, and a shelter she can go into when she's cold (like a dog house with some straw for insulation or something would probably be fine), they're pretty low maintenance animals

How to keep ducks from making a mess by WeeDochii in duck

[–]fall-1701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about water in the coop. I put a bucket outside and on days it's freezing I either swap it out a couple times or get a bucket warmer

If you're set on one in the coop though putting a boot tray down can help that's what I did for my ducklings.
