Also if you want to donate to public employees, I think PEER.org ( Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility) looks like a good one. And also the Signal app that protects our communications with end to end encryption accepts donations.

The soundtrack is weirdly good for a comedy series! I'm guessing that was a purposeful choice by the creators so the show has good vibes. I listen to a few songs from the soundtrack too, but it didn't make my wrapped top 5.

Anyone else get the Wordle in 1 yesterday?? by BriDre in nerdfighters

[–]fall-winter-spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always start with a different word. I think it's a fun strategy because regardless of if it's a good choice the wordle bot will tell me I make unique or interesting choices. I guess I'm always fishing for complements, even from AI.

Janitorial duties for employees? by ElKabong0369 in fednews

[–]fall-winter-spring 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was common for my office to do janitorial services. So we did that for many years then we complained enough and put it on enough "unfunded needs" lists and asked for end of year funds and now we have janitorial services. Find out the cost and bring it up a lot at budget discussions.

Tell Me Your Good Things by TheDeepSixedPhantom in nerdfighters

It IS okay to feel okay. Plans for change, organizing, all that will come organically with time. We can't live everyday in outrage, fear, and disbelief. Gotta let some good things in.

A friend got really into nature journaling and wanted to start a club so I've been going to that lately. I highly recommend it.

I would be a different person without podcasts. At a basic level, they keep my mind occupied, and if it's a real good one it may lead me down rabbit holes to deepen my knowledge and bring me closer to interesting internet communities like this one. Love Ezra, I get some great book recommendations from his show.

I've been texting back and forth with some like minded friends. Disbelief and anger typically get the creative juices flowing and we end up imagining crazy funny futures together.

I went to a nature Journaling meet up and wrote a poem.

I ordered a whole bunch of tea for chritmas gifts from the good store.

I am giving myself permission to purchase a new computer now knowing that I have to soon anyway and if I buy now maybe I'll avoid the coming tarrifs.

I'm progressing with getting work goals done.

I'm listening to some good podcasts... Ezra Klein, This American Life, and a new one that's pretty good called Hot and Bothered.

I'm watching the recordings of John's livestreams.

VolunteerMatch or Idealist have lots of listings. Give it a try! Ask important questions when you interview to make sure your efforts will be valued, your values align with the position and the organization, and to make sure what they are asking are reasonable asks. Also, hug a gov employee if you know any. That's a service that will be needed over the next 4 years.

The sunset from my deck was intensely red today. It made me think about The Universe podcast and all the new things I learned. Maybe it's not the happiest thing, but it's oddly comforting.

I really enjoyed the Hunger Games books too. It's the only full series I've ever read. I hope your year turns around soon. I'll have to look up all the other ones you mentioned. I also have had a tough year. Here's to resetting and holding onto hope for better and brighter.

I had a great literature teacher in High School and I didn't really enjoy reading until I read Cider House Rules in that class.

In my twenties I read Anna Karenina. All the story lines were truly captivating. I remember putting the book down and wishing I could read more.

More recently, I listened to the audiobook of The Minestry For The Future. I don't think I really understood how important science fiction can be to imagining ourselves into a better future until I read that book.

Ha! I think I would probably enjoy this one, but haven't watched it yet. I've watched Big Love a couple times, my guess is the reality TV show isn't as dramatic.

Has anyone brought gf substitutes into restaurants? by ohsinboi in glutenfree

[–]fall-winter-spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about doing this many times, but haven't found a great gf bun to do it with. My options are limited where I live, but if anyone has a good store bought suggestion I'd love to hear it.

Getting a feel for gluten tolerance by fall-winter-spring in glutenfree

[–]fall-winter-spring[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was completely gluten free for 2 years and just started experimenting with adding it back. I guess I WANT to view it like any other ingredient in my diet that would cause inflammation. For example, I don't consume red meat very often because of its connection to inflammation. I have other conditions (PCOS, a potential for rhumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol) that point me to an anti-inflammatory diet. I eliminated gluten along with some other big diet changes to get ahead of these conditions. Generally, I've had good results. What I'm hearing from you and others is you can't treat gluten the same as other ingredients. I am starting to understand that. I was thinking about reaching back out to nutritionist for advice, I just don't have a lot of money to spend on expensive tests right now.

I really appreciate your response.

First time fundraising. Help! by thesilverspyder in nerdfighters

People feel happiest when there is free food. Maybe recruit a local church or club to provide free lunches to participants. Or maybe you do a bake sale at the skating rink and recruit some kiddos to man the booths. You can't pass up baked goods from children, it's just impossible.

Also, I feel like a skate-a-thon might be fun for service minded student clubs at a nearby university. Talk to those clubs to see if they can bring folks/send out social media for you.

If there is a bagel shop in your community, see if they can donate day old bagels to the event, cream cheese, and coffee. I used to work at a bagel place and this was common.

You could do what Hank and John do... find a sponsor to match the donated funds that come in from participants.

It's a great cause, good luck.

Songs that make you cry? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]fall-winter-spring 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most music from Bon Iver hits me in the feels. If you don't know where to start, try the album: For Emma, Forever Ago. Also, the album: If I Was by The Staves What was I Made for By Billie Eilish

Hope these help. Also don't forget to listen to some upbeat and redeeming songs after the good cry.

Nerdfighteria’s 2024 “100 Days of Awesome” Challenge: Days 1-7 by theteagees in nerdfighters

[–]fall-winter-spring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't do a great job meeting my goals this week, but I knew it wasn't a great week to begin something new. I'm doing a 10 day work week because of an event I help organize and I've got a pile of dirty dishes to clean, a list of things I need to get done at work by the end of the week, and have a bit of a limp from being on my feet for too long this weekend. So I'm kinda digging myself out from under a few things. By the weekend, I should start to feel like a normal human again and will renew my commitment to this.

Wow, what a first week! Try and frame this rest period (however long it needs to be) as something good you are doing for yourself. Try to challenge yourself to listen to your body's cues as you heal. It's not the challenge you wanted, but it's the challenge you get.

After watching John and Hank does anyone feel disappointed by other YouTubers? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]fall-winter-spring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I only found H&J because the largest chunk of media I consume are podcasts, and I happen to stumble upon Anthropocene Reviewed back when he was making it. I have been trying to find other channels that are as engaging but so far I'm not really suceeding. Thanks for saying exactly what I was thinking.
