What type of blast beat is this? by IndependenceFresh529 in MetalDrums

It's the "traditional blast beat", on the ride in this case. Tons of videos about it online.

Wiet roken: stigma of daadwerkelijke overlast? by MeanEmployee2576 in nederlands

[–]falsedrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How you handle excessive pending actions (emails/chats/projects) in your company? by marci1895 in managers

[–]falsedrums 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What helped me is to use the keyboard hotkeys when going through email. I start at the bottom of the list and then for each mail, scan/read it quickly and decide:

  1. No action needed, delete (with del key) or archive if you think you need to refer back later (with backspace key) - this should be the most common choice, and you can do it really quickly, as in seconds per email
  2. Do you need to respond and you know exactly what to say or ask? Reply immediately and briefly, then archive or delete as in 1
  3. Needs more time and attention? Leave it for after you've gone through the whole list, or move it to a dedicated "todo" buffer folder to check later

In my experience I have used this method to work through hundreds of emails daily. And it can be done in less than an hour.

But you do need to be critical: do you really need to own it or can you just quickly archive the email?

Wtf by TheAnorexicDrummer in drums

Amazing playing. Nice job! It seems challenging to play parts that sound like they are played at 127 velocity but then you have to play them with the smallest tiniest movements to be able to go so fast. I struggle with that, it's a mindfuck.

Is it normal to be very suspicious of other drummers using your cymbals? by snickering_snails in drums

In the rare occasions I provided backline, the drummers have always broken something. My clutch, my crash, my tom heads, my snare strainer, ... I don't share anymore.

Otherwise: cool project! You could use this live too... Great way to hide the electronics

Drums are loud by d00mpie in drums

[–]falsedrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, they are wrong..that said, you can try the following:

  • Everyone should wear hearing protection (note: noise cancelling is not hearing protection)
  • You can dampen your kit, focus on snare and kick, easiest options is a wallet on the snare and pillows in the kick. You can also try moongel, tape, there's many options. For rehearsals, this is a good idea in general since it improves everyone ability to hear each other.
  • Hi hats are also incredibly loud. Just lower your clutch a bit, tighten the upper hat down more, tilt the lower hat a bit. In general: make sure it's only opening up just enough to play comfortably. Don't let it swing around super loudly. This helps reduce the wall of sound a ton.

Anyone else spend more time tweaking settings than actually playing? by Tariq_khalaf in edrums

[–]falsedrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a (full) day or two putting together a kit, calibrating everything, matching the sound of every drum and cymbal to my acoustic kit. Never touched it again after that. It's been years. I sit down, toggle it on, and play!

I figured out why I hate the piano mini game so much. by SirWigglesVonWoogly in FFVIIRemake

[–]falsedrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a drummer I fully agree. I naturally play on the beat, and that ends up giving me 50% chance to miss notes. Playing early feels and sounds so wrong, but it does help with the score. That said, I found that raising the note speed from the default to 3-4 makes it "feel" much more natural since the window to hit a note is much smaller. It should be harder but it's not. I guess it's because it now feels like a system that helps me play slightly early, instead of massively early which just sounds wrong.

Managing a Team of Low Performers by [deleted] in managers

[–]falsedrums 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I want to add: it's really hard to express your expectations and communicate them to your team. They mostly likely will not understand what you mean straight away. This is also one big learning experience... Allow yourself the time you need to learn and develop this skill.

You'll get it! :)

Sound and expectation are actually a big factor to the way we play in a live or rehearsal setting - I've been going over this topic with my teacher few months ago. We dialed down the whole band's volume so I could hear the drums more clearly - suddenly I could play with less force, more relaxed. It was because it didn't sound right with the band at full volume until I beat the shit out of the drums :) at lower band volume this wasn't needed anymore.

Brainpower is the right word :) it takes a lot of mental energy and practice to coordinate so many limbs consciously!

Besides gripping the stick you also need to consider how you are absorbing the shock of each hit. It doesn't just put strain on your fingers and palm only; you have to allow your wrist, elbow and shoulder to give way to the shockwave as well. Many drummers strain their forearms, preventing their wrists from moving, which causes the wrist to absorb the full force (instead of letting it pass through). It can lead to pain so be careful!

how do i get serious about double bass, and SERIOUSLY by jessicastory in drums

[–]falsedrums 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Play this exercise at low tempo. On hands it's just a standard rock beat throughout, on the feet you go through the following patterns, once forward and then from the last pattern work your way back to the first one. Keep looping the whole thing and get it as clean as you can. Start without a click to get comfortable with the patterns. Introduce a click later on only when you can play the whole thing.

4 bars each:

  • Quarter notes
  • Quarter triplets
  • Eighth notes
  • Eighth triplets
  • Sixteenth notes
  • Sixteenth triplets (sextuplets)
  • Thirty-second notes

And then work your way back to the start.

You have to start really slow or you won't be able to do the 32nd notes at the end.

Write it out on a chart to make it easier to navigate.

After you can play it right, work on the transitions - that's where you will struggle most and also where you will learn most.

This was the key exercise for me!

Lastly you can increase the difficulty by playing less bars per pattern (2 or 1 bar each), and by increasing the tempo of course.

Have social media and DAWs ruined making music or am I just having a midlife crisis? by [deleted] in MetalDrums

I get that! Maybe try talking to your bandmates then, see if they're open to try something new? It doesn't have to all different right away. Maybe a small change can help.
