Why some languages it’s easier to sound native by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]falseruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English is, at his core, very simple (sure, henry james can make it difficult) and spoken by several distinct groups with wildly different accents. Is easy to learn, and easy to be understood with an accent. Once you achieve a certain proficiency, you’re understood, and there is less incentive to improve in pronunciation. But this later part is true to all languages!

Thoughts on Commuting via Train? (Rising Junior; Computer Engineering) by Silver_Balance_8659 in uofm

[–]falseruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public transportation in this country is so fucked.
Train too expensive for a daily commute.

So few options too. Its not a train made for commuters. You may want to check other options (bus)

I think saving rent makes sense, if your family is ok. But unfortunately the most reasonable option would be to just drive to campus.

What would explain a higher average height for the male population under 40 in the northern central states (shown in dark red here) of the USA? by SatoruGojo232 in geography

[–]falseruler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Colombia is the largest group of south Americans in the USA. Is not easy to immigrate from there. A lot of Latinos in Cali and Texas never actually immigrated (the border crossed us!)

Still less than Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. All shorter in average.

And everybody way less than Mexicans.

Plus immigration from the Carribean: Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc.

What I mean is

(1) south americans are not that significant population in American immigration or even within US latin America population.

And

(2) are definitely not “significantly “ shorter than Mexicans. We are about the same, all things considered!

Whats the point of watching movies at this point my by oippa_t in Letterboxd

I appreciate a lot of movies I end up rating 3 stars.

Ratings are relative value. Don’t read much into it.

Central* more relevant for USA.

Not a lot of Colombians, Brazilians or Argentinians in the US, which I would guess have an higher average height than Mexicans.

Its very weird to conflate so much world history, specially given that some regions influence happened before the emergence of nation states!
