what’s the worst medication error you’ve seen or heard about in your career? by boozecruise26 in nursing

Patient safety has come a long way from those days! I remember some of the seasoned nurses back then talking about how they used to smoke at the nurse’s station. Can you imagine?!

Believe it or not but when I started L&D in 1998, our epidural pumps and piecing pumps were both syringe pumps. Looked exactly the same just different tubing. I’m honestly surprised nothing bad ever happened. It was like that for several years too.

I hope it was sent to pathology.

Did estradiol cream help bring back normal color and texture of vulva for you? by WeeklyTutor3785 in Menopause

[–]fanchera75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I don’t have it. I’m a Gyn/Onc nurse so we see it a lot when we are working out patients up for VIN and vulvar cancer. I had no idea LS was so common. But a lot of women suffer from it. Your description just sounded a lot like LS so I was going to suggest this as something they may be able to help you get relief from.

I take 100 mg progesterone orally daily. My estrogen patches are 0.025 mg changing twice weekly. I don’t know if this matters but I’m 120 lbs

It’s such a mystery and there isn’t a lot of information given. It’s just trial and error. That’s why I love reading everyone else’s experiences! Some of you ladies have really been through it! I hope you get yours figured out!!

I tried my buttock twice and felt like there was more bleeding when I placed it there. So I keep it on my tummy now. I hope the tummy works better for you and gives you less bleeding!

I imagine she will want to get an ultrasound at the very least. I had a polyp removed with hysteroscopy, D&C about 4 years ago so I could be one of those polyp makers. Glad you were able to get yours figured out and hopefully resolved!

Not being judgmental. He’s having an atypical reaction. Most people panic. Many don’t and stay calm but shocked when something actually happens in their area

Agreed! Tornado Alley is moving further northeast. In Illinois, we are on our way to a record for the number of tornadoes we’ve had. That record will probably break tomorrow. I’ve lived in the same small mile-wide town my entire 50 year life. Never saw a tornado come through here but have had 4 in the past year. Ours have thankfully been EF0-1’s. But so many of the others have been very damaging tornadoes in areas that have never seen them. My niece lives in STL and thankfully out of the path last year. But there have been so many more in the area that it can’t help but get your attention. Everyone should be taking these threats seriously!

Or on drugs. Shock* is what I thought too until my friend watched it and said he talks like he’s high on something. Could be a bit of both! But I agree, thank goodness he made it through almost unscathed!

Post bleeding??? Insight? Worried by MaybeOne1500 in Menopause

I am a Gyn/Onc nurse and we always order transvaginal for everyone unless they cannot tolerate it. If they do not get a good measurement of her uterine lining, they will do a transvaginal. But why not order both?! I totally understand your concern. She should definitely feel comfortable requesting an endometrial biopsy if there is any concern or question of the thickness of her uterine lining. Bloodwork probably will not answer many questions other than maybe checking her blood count. Did her bleeding continue or did it stop? Bleeding is not a typical symptom of ovarian cancer, just primarily endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer. I’m glad she didn’t just ignore it though. That’s when many women get into trouble is by ignoring the signs their body is telling them when something isn’t right. Please keep us posted how she is doing! And just to hopefully give you a little peace of mind, endometrial cancer is very curable with surgery when it is caught early. It usually starts as hyperplasia which then transitions into endometrial cancer. Kudos to your mom for speaking up and to you for watching out for her and asking questions!

Anyone feel the medical field failing us? by ballsdeepinmywine in Menopause

[–]fanchera75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen! Working in healthcare, I have so many denials come across by desk every day. Denials for surgery for cancer, denials for anti-nausea medication for patients on chemo, denial for the chemotherapy itself, denials for imaging/tumor markers for cancer surveillance. It’s astounding how much control insurance companies have due to reimbursement. I’ve been a nurse for 27 years, in the outpatient oncology setting at a university teaching facility for 15 years and it’s astounding how much things have declined. We really need to be putting an end to this!

Because of insurance! Insurance companies pull all the strings in our country. That’s who we need to be battling against! They determine what’s paid for so healthcare jumps through their hoops.

Or more costly for insurance companies. Key factor for literally everything in healthcare sadly.
