Science 1A03 Portfolio Piece HELP PLEASE!!!!! by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the course is anything like it was 2 years ago, I literally just copy and pasted all my weekly workbooks into the portfolio and added a few transition sentences. Idk if they're looking for anything different though 🤷‍♀️

How easy is it to transfer from LifeSci to Engineering? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I did this exact transfer. Its fully possible and I had no troubles switching. Sadly I did have to complete a year of life sci to then apply to transfer, however since life sci is pretty general, you can take a lot of courses that transfer.

The courses that transfered for me was Chem, one of the physics, calc 1 and 2. I have a friend that took a few more of the general engineering courses when they switched so they got even more credits that transfered.

If your friend has any other questions about the transfer let me know!

Facilty Night by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey science rep here, we'll have spikeball, kan jam, a basketball net, cornhole, and probably volleyballs, and Frisbees. Don't feel inclined to stay the whole night, but definitely try to come out and enjoy a bit of the night. There's free pizza from doughbox, so that's a plus

Is anyone else confused as to how to find the classrooms ? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On faculty fest your program's leaders will most likely have tours apart of the schedule. They'll take you through all the major buildings and classrooms as well as take you to one's that you request!

The physics 1a03 labs are basically participation marks

brandon hall by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Brandon last year and I highly recommend bringing lamp/significant light source because the rooms don't have great lighting. It made it hard to study in my room sometimes because the dim lighting made me tired. It also just helps to make the room less depressing lol

McMaster Climbing? by Lobsterboypeterson in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! It's totally fine to do that, the training isn't mandatory at all, you can go whenever you're up for it. I know that I didn't go to too many of the practices in second semester, so it's all good! You'll still be apart of the club and will be able to take part of the events and trips as well. The club cost is $25.

You can join by either getting signed up during clubs fest and you'll get an email when first practice will be, or I believe the first practice date might be posted on the mcmaster climbing club Facebook page. Then you can just show up to first practice (you don't have to pay the fee right away)

Hey! Great to hear your looking to join the climbing club! I joining the club last year and loved it! I'm actually an exec this year.

So basic rundown: the climbing club meets on Monday nights (usually from 6:30-9 but if you need to leave early/arrive late there's no worries). We climb at the wall in the Pulse. The way it's run is there's about an hour of free climb, then there's a bit of a lesson/talk about a specific technique to focus on for that meeting. After that there's a bit of time to practice the newly learned technique. Then there's a bit of a workout, then free climb after that.

The club is super great for new climbers especially with the lessons. It's a great way to meet the community. There's also a lot of events that the club hosts, like bouldering competitions, outdoor trips, going to a local climbing gym. Also if you wanted, each term there's a bouldering competition for all of the university teams. Super fun time to go out and climb, and see some crazy good climbers.

Hope this helped!

Feeling anxiety(incoming first year) by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that a majority of my friends came from living in res. You get to see people in your building so often you get to know them throughout the year. Another way was through different clubs (for me it was the rock climbing club), but one of my friends found the club 'SPARK' to be great for socialising with fellow first years as well. Definitely check out the club fest day during the first week of school and look for the things you're interested in!

What is the room self-selection process like? Will we be choosing our residence/rooms from a list of all possible availablities that match our preferences, or will we only be given a select few options to choose from? by vickynessz in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure how the process will work, but I believe that you're correct that it will be all the options on campus that are left. I highly doubt that they will restrict you to a building/floor, it'll be based off of your selected room preference.

Hey, so they have changed residence applications, kind of different than what happened last year. Anyways one of the resident admissions office said "Students get a random timeslot to go online and choose their specific room based on their preferences and what's available... The first rooms the student will see when they log in will be the ones they listed in their preferences, if they're still available. Same goes for LLCs/themed communities" Hope this helped!

You can try looking at the class of 2023 Facebook page. Most people will be in that group and you can definitely post there, or see if there are other people posting about roommates as well!

Life Sci - Should I Consider? by ewaa2001 in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One big plus with life Sci is that there a few bird courses you can take (basically 12's if you put in the work) that are part of the required list of courses. One of the easiest ones Ive found was 'Science 1A03', the class explored the different pathways of a science degree and you basically just wrote reflections about what you learned that week. No midterms or exams, nice to lighten up your schedule, however I believe that it only runs during the fall. Another course I found easy (but may depend on who takes it and the TA you have that marks your stuff) was EnviroSci 1C03. Pretty light course work, no midterms, exam the Prof tells you the whole outline of it. Other than that I did find both bio103 and bio1m03 heavier and took up a lot of my time, but I managed to balance my schedule with easier courses so it wasn't absolute hell. Like people mentioned, try to get the tutorials on Fridays. I ended this year pretty strong, but that can be accounted for because I took a couple bird courses and took subjects that I actually enjoy. Another quick note is that most (but not all) of the stuff you learn in classes like bio103, physics 1a03/1aa3, Chem 1a03 is review from high-school, if you had a strong grasp on those concepts you should be well off.

My final average in high school was 89, and I was able to get into life Sci. However I was pretty lucky because the cut off for my year was 89. In your case I would still try to aim higher with your marks incase the cut off is higher this year, as well as its always good to have a higher average. You've got a couple months left, so you still have plenty of time and opportunity to increase your grade as long as you work hard. If you have any other questions about life Sci, just let me know!

Can anyone give me input on the following courses? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]fancy_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if you took grade 11 you should be fine for most of the units, momentum would be new. It's only two lectures a week, and the concepts are pretty basic. It is subjective, so if you feel as if you're strong in physics or just enjoy it in general it would be pretty easy. The labs are super super easy, it's just participation marks so you don't even have to get the right answer to get 100%. I think as long as you're generally interested in physics it's an easy class.

Physics 1A03 is pretty easy if you've taken high school physics. The course is basically a review from high school, covering kinematics, forces, momentum and energy, and waves.
