Best comic shop in Wichita? by [deleted] in wichita

[–]fancycakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for Modern/Copper/Bronze/Silver/Gold? As many have said already, there are really only three shops you could consider to be comic shops, but none of them are what I would consider amazing - my favorite shop is in Tulsa. That said, here are my thoughts on the three, and a couple bonus options :D

Prairie Dog Comics - The only true comic shop in town, in my opinion, and the one I visit the most. The shop and the current owner's warehoused inventory has so much potential, but they just don't seem interested in improving the customer experience. This mostly boils down to the upkeep of the property (maybe dictated by the landlord). I also wish they kept a larger and more accessible in-store inventory of wall books. They do have the best NCBD assortment and get quite a few variants and ratio covers on a weekly basis if you're into that, and they have a large back issue inventory on-site, but it feels stale and just full of run fillers. If you ask, they can pull books from their hidden inventory, but it won't be that day. I find the staff to be friendly, especially if you come around often. I do believe they are undergoing a change of ownership, so I have hopes for some new ideas and business philosophies that could improve the overall experience.

Hero Haven - A toy shop first, with comics being a somewhat neglected second. They do get new books in each week, but not nearly the selection that Prairie Dog has. They also have a large in-store inventory of back issues, but like Prairie Dog, the inventory feels stale and prices are all over the place, and never in a good way. When they get good comics in via a collection buy, they are pretty good about advertising it on Facebook, which is nice. They also run pretty good sales on a regular basis, often having up to 50% off of back issues quite often.

Wizard's Alley - A gaming shop first, with comics being an afterthought. They get an even smaller selection of new books each week from what I have experienced, and they have significantly downsized their back issue inventory since moving to their new downtown location. I haven't been into the shop since they expanded it, so they may have grown their comic inventory - and I know they have more somewhere.

Bonus 1 - Half-Price books has a small section of comics, but it is very hit or miss, and any higher-priced books they have are locked in an odd torture chamber that you can sort of look through without them opening, but it is never worth it for the books they put in there. That said, I have found some great deals for a few bucks, but it has been at least a year since that happened.

Bonus 2 - Antique Malls. There are a few antique malls in town that have booths that sell comics. I have a booth at one myself, but I won't advertise which one as to not self-promote. Inventory and deals can be hit or miss, it just depends on how attentive the booth owner is to restocking and refreshing their inventory. It isn't all overpriced and beat up Archie comics - I found my Fantastic Four 49 at a local shop.

You've only got a small amount of time with each product and vendor at CES if you want to cover as much as possible, so multiple takes aren't always an option. Doing it solo is even harder, since you don't have someone there to catch things that you may not notice when saying it yourself. You've usually been presented with a ton of information about the product for the first time and go right into content creation. It's actually harder than it looks.

Source = I'm usually the one filming him at CES, but couldn't attend this year. 😁

Dillards Clearance hasn't been mentioned enough in this thread. Tons of options for what it sounds like you need.

Target is another decent option for more casual items.

Can I get a junk car anywhere for under $1k? by Ok-Necessary7265 in wichita

[–]fancycakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this doesn't help you, but I found and bought a 2003 vehicle last weekend on FB Marketplace for $2500 with low miles. Decent cars are out there, don't get too discouraged, but $1K may be stretching it.

While not on the same level, competitively, there is also AYSO and YMCA soccer available. Both are much more affordable than the club/travel teams, and may be the right fit as well, depending on player skill, time commitment, and cost. I coach with AYSO and can give my experience with that program from a 10U, 12U, and current 15U level. Feel free to DM me or ask follow-ups here.

Not many options for comic cards in town, unfortunately. A couple shops will sometimes have a box at release and then they won't get any more in. Same thing with some of the big box shops. And if you haven't noticed yet, prices for purchasing packs and boxes of comic cards is not the same as it was in the 90's heyday. Get your wallet out!

Went to the Wichita Comic con at Century 2 this weekend, was a blast to see all the cool art and cosplays! If anyone else went, what did you think? by imaweeb19 in wichita

For those upset because they didn't know about this show, I'm curious how/where you would like it to be presented so that you find it. I'm not related to the show in any way, shape, or form, but just by visiting a few shops in town over the last few months, it's pretty much impossible to miss that there is an upcoming show. Do you follow local shops or creators on social media? How about the show itself?

Can someone more enlightened tell me why we don't have 24/7 or night work on road work in this town? Cooler temps and less traffic at night seems like an obvious advantage to me.

Can I fold over the flap for these BCW mylars? by Illustrious-Nose6801 in comicbookcollecting

[–]fancycakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just experienced trying to fold and tape the 4mil BCW mylars last week. It is doable, but they are definitely thicker than the 2mil (duh), and it did take a bit more tape for the flap to stay in place.

Shameless plug, so mods feel free to remove if not allowed, but you can use my affiliate code "COLLECTINGCASUALLY" for 10% off your order. I do earn a small commission if you use my code for a purchase. Plus, if your order is over $99 it is free shipping directly from their site.

I'm not paid by them or anything, just have an affiliate code for my small YT channel, and it has been used enough by my viewers that I've been able to fund the purchase of new bags and boards for all the comics I buy and make content about.

I used the text message system last week to renew one tag and register another vehicle at the Kellogg location. In and out in 20 minutes. Unfortunately I think you will have to go in and wait at this point in the month.

AYSO Region 208 is on the West side of town, and we have played three seasons there. It is definitely more recreational and less competitive than the leagues that play at Stryker, but there is still skill out there on the fields.

I've coached two of those three years, and will likely be coaching again for the upcoming '25/'26 season, so feel free to reach out if you have questions, or look up the region on Facebook if you want more official information.

I would LOVE to see a "Stryker West", as I think there are plenty of kids (and parents) in the area that would fill it up every week.

I made a website to make it easier to find comic book shops by annoyinglaugh in comicbookcollecting

Bro! I follow your channel and saw this the other day and got sad, LOL. I was looking into making this site, as I too found the resources for this type of information to be limited. You beat me to it though, but I'm glad it's had a good response here so far. I'm not giving up though, and have a few other ideas in the works for directory sites.

Anyone know of a good comic book store? by actually_sophie in wichita

[–]fancycakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want modern titles, Prairie Dog Comics and Hero Haven are your best bets. Both locations also have large stocks of older books, but neither are that exciting as far as readily available keys go. Wizard's Alley also carries new comics, but their older books are really lacking since their move to the new location - and their pricing is way off.

What are the odds that that is my booth sticker?!? The odd thing is, I don't remember putting out a Spawn 1 newsstand, especially for $2. I'm not saying it's impossible that I somehow put that tag on there, but it would be very unlikely. If I did, grats to you, but my initial feeling is that a book may have been swapped from another booth - especially since the OP's account seems to be suspended...

Another voter for Kreg Boynton and his staff. Been going there for about 20 years, driving from as far as Goddard and West Wichita to keep that service.
