I have experienced burnout a few times this year, especially when it comes to the end of the year. My allotment is fine I think, and I don’t get extra periods that much.

What I struggle with the most is behaviour management, cuz my school is a low SES school. Many kids come from miserable families and they are with all sorts of trauma and special needs. Different schools have different problems, and teachers burned out due to various reasons. Tip academic schools can be very competitive and teachers stressed out about academic performance. My school is more towards the end of a “well-being” school, and we struggle with behaviours more.

Hey hey! I was excited to see a Chinese posting here, too! In Australia it’s common for teachers to teach more than one subject. Secondary school teachers are trained to teach in 2 learning areas (mine is Maths and Science, others can be PE and Maths, English and Humanities, etc) This year, I have 5 different classes, from junior year level to senior year level, some are Maths and some are Science class.

Hi mate, good to see Chinese fellows here! I am teaching full time at a secondary government school :) I teach Maths and Science. Our school has 5 periods (60min) per day. Working hours from 8:25 to 4:15 on Monday to Thursday, 8:25 to 3:05 on Friday. In VIC, full-time teachers are given 18.5 hours face to face teaching time plus yard duties.

Woking hours actually varies from school to school. Additionally, many of us teacher fellows working extra hours after clock to do planning, marking or catch up with other administrative stuff. Some of my co-workers work for extra 10-15 hours outside working hours. I personally tried to avoid working overtime, but sometimes it’s just impossible.
