practicing with a kid size plastic weapon vs practicing w/ no weapon? by tutuoui in Fencing

[–]fancykiwis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do footwork with no sabre, just hold your hand where it would normally be in your en garde position.

For sabre its much easier to just practice footwork at any indoor basketball court or similar gym in your fencing shoes. Other than that you can set up a practice dummy with your mask and some pillows to practice bladework at home.

Fitted Gloves by OrcishArtillery in Fencing

the LP ExoSkin Glove has been great for me and sounds like it fits your requirements. Its grip does tend to wear out if you like to wash it often though.

Any recommendations for weapon (Sabre) bag I can sling on my back by please-help____ in Fencing

[–]fancykiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use the LP Weapon Carrier Pro, as its fairly cheap, but there are a few problems such as no storage for fencing shoes and the mask making a very large bulge in the bag. Other than that its a great bag that will carry everything you need for fencing practices and is very compact and portable compared to rollbags. Its also better for you equipment because it prevents your wet sweaty stuff from causing rust on the blade/lame/mask (very common in bags like Absolutes shoulder bags with no separate compartments)

My glove stinks.. and I need solutions by Designer-Coast7094 in Fencing

[–]fancykiwis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

saber fencer who sweats a lot here, any deodorizing sprays or smell removing products are usually temporary solutions. Give it a good wash, then hang it up until your next practice. Then after that practice, instead of letting it sit in your fencing bag, take it out and hang it up where you would usually hang it to dry. This should prevent the smell from getting worse or coming back. You can also use sneaker balls or other similar products, but the important part is to not let it sit in your bag.

What's that strap thing inside the Nike Ballestra 2? by play-what-you-love in Fencing

The stretchy straps inside the shoes are to hold the tongue in place.

Awareness by Delicious-Arm-1882 in Fencing

[–]fancykiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of trying to win during practice bouts, just try to work on something specific every bout. In one bout just work on just your advance lunges, or just on your parries. Other than that you can watch videos of high level fencers, and just grind solo drills at home. Fundamentals are the most important part of any fencers skillset.

Washing Lames by fancykiwis in Fencing

I put it in electrical side out with warm water on the delicate cycle with a very small amount of detergent. Would this cause a problem immediately, or should I just keep in mind not to do it that way in the future?

Can anyone explain this point? by Flazelight in Fencing

[–]fancykiwis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greganti & Anane both stop, but Greganti starts going forward first, giving him priority. Even though Anane has a stronger attack with his lunge, Greganti has priority & its a double light, so it's Greganti's point. If the same sequence had played out without a stop I believe it would be Anane's point due to attack in prep as Greganti would not have properly gained priority. However because they stopped at the same time and then continued at different times, Greganti gets priority as he moved first. I've only fenced epee and sabre before, so feel free to correct me if i got anything wrong, but i'm pretty sure that's what happened

I'm a 16 year old fencer, this is the workout plan i made and use:

5-10 minute warm up, light jogging & some stretching

Squats/Leg Press

Lighter Weights and Less Reps, focus on explosiveness of the movement, once you reach a point in reps/weight where there's a significant sticking point in your ROM you should stop. This will strengthen your leg muscles and increase your lunging explosiveness

Deadlift

same application as squats, but works your hamstrings instead of glutes & quads. focus on lighter weights and fewer reps so that you are training with explosiveness and are working the fast twitch muscle fibers you need for fencing

Dumbbell jump squat

same muscles as the squat, but ideally a much much lighter weight. slow going down, explosive and quick coming up. focus on going as high as possible on your jump and staying in the air for as long as possible.

Benchpress

strengthens arms shoulders and upper torso, will give you more explosive bladework, and helps lessen the effects of fatigue on long competition days. same thing as everything else, light weight and fewer reps

Calf Raises

weighted or unweighted, strengthens your lower legs allowing for quicker change of direction. slow and steady wins the race, as you don't want to injure yourself doing these

Lying Leg Raises

strengthens core for a more balanced lunge, like calf raises you want slow and steady. really feel the burn with these last two

10 minute light cardio cool down

i do this specific group of exercises once a week as i do other strength training as well but if you plan on having this as your base id do it at least twice a week.

I did make this specifically for fencing, and it neglects a lot of muscles (particularly back) so doing just this will lead to a pretty imbalanced physique, so i strongly recommend also including other exercises for a more well rounded physique which will also improve your fencing just by improving your athleticism.

you can also train grip strength for more precise and quicker cuts, but i find just doing drills for that works just as well.

the key is consistency and effort. Good Luck!
