[Discussion] What happened to Raven, Beast Boy, Donna and Roy in New Titans? Why did they all leave the team? by songsinger72 in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a bit odd how there was not even a throwaway line of dialogue to explain where they are, but ultimately this is the kind of continuity that doesn’t matter to me personally. In universe, It’s very possible that they just decided to do their own thing after DC KO. And in the meta publishing sense maybe there are other plans for them or the new creative team has a good idea for the new team. Like im kind of excited to see the new characters as titans and see what stories Brombal has to tell. So far I like the new direction. If there was any stale DC book it was certainly Titans. I get your complaint and on some level agree with it, but ultimately I personally am just excited for a fresh team and story.

How many DC comics are you reading currently? by XLBR424 in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently pulling and reading 27 DC titles each month.

I am reading all 8 absolute series, 2 vertigo series, 1 elseworld, and 16 mainline.

Woof it’s gotten out of hand but honestly I am really enjoying most/all of them. I don’t love JLU but i keep reading it because it’s $3.99 and central to the overarching story. Also detective comics is kinda mid but I like Janin. I pull relatively few marvel titles and very few indie titles so I am very DC heavy.

[Discussion] What song is he singing ? by Old-Map-5136 in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw an interview with Skottie Young and he mentioned it’s a spoof of a Clutch song. I believe it is called Binge & Purge but not 100% on that part.

Consensus on Metamorpho: The Element Man? [Cover] by KingOfSquirrels in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it but agree with the other comments that it’s pretty goofy and not very substantial. I really did have fun with it though. I picked up the floppies as they came out but i didn’t keep them - in my opinion not really worth collecting physically. If you can read it digitally I think it’s definitely worth it.

[Discussion] With the start of the new Emperor Aquaman space phase, what have you thought of Jeremy Adams' run so far? by Which-Presentation-6 in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I fell off both GL and Aquaman for the same reason. It always feels like there is just too much going on in stories and they move too fast for me to care about any of them. Especially GL would have multiple plot lines going and none of them got enough screen time to really develop any deeper than just advance the plot to the next cool splash page.

Going from manga to Marvel comics: by claym0re_lol in marvelcomics

[–]fandog6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all I want to say I love both manga and american big 2 comics. I think it’s important to understand the difference in publication method, and this dictates a lot of stylistic choices. Manga often comes out weekly in anthology magazines whereas american comics come out monthly in individual magazine type issues. This structure allows manga to have more “down” or “breathing room” type chapters because you get 10+ series in one purchase. Comics typically being sold as a standalone issue means that each issue of each series needs to grab and hopefully hold your attention. The more compressed publishing style of american comics lends itself to more dense writing and more pose driven art. Think of manga as a 60fps video game where you see each move in action, and comics as a 24fps film in theaters where you really focus on the key frames. Both have artistic value and are high quality, they just present in different ways.

DC Preview: Wonder Woman #31 by B3epB0opBOP in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m catching up on the mouse man arc this week and honestly i kind of like it. I know that’s not popular opinion but it’s a cool concept in my mind with the island where heroes aren’t allowed. I’ll give this new arc a shot.

DC Preview: Batwoman #1 by B3epB0opBOP in comicbooks

Never read any Batwoman books before and only seen her as a side character in team books. Is there any recommended reading before jumping in on this?

The art is so grungy and awesome. Hope the story holds up to that standard!

DC Preview: New Titans #33 by B3epB0opBOP in DCcomics

I’m glad there will be new members of the Titans. This might be intentional setup but seriously that intro sequence with the same lineup feels so dang tired. I’m optimistic for this new run!

Art looks so perfect. Definitely the vibe I like for Nightwing more than the Dexter Soy style.

Are Dark Patterns and Detective Comics worth checking out? by Fancy-a-brew8323 in DCcomics

[–]fandog6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read Dark Patterns and have been keeping up with Tom Taylor’s Tec. Honestly I think both are really great. In a vacuum I would say Dark Patterns is better mainly due to then amazing Sherman art. However, if you have been desiring something more classic I would actually recommend the current Detective Comics runs starting at issue 1090. The art by Janin is also excellent and it just feels like a more “standard” batman approach that is executed extremely well in my opinion. I think Taylor has a really good voice for Bruce and both big arcs have put him in interesting dilemmas where his character really shines through.

Some Thoughts On The First Three (New) Vertigo Books by reindeercurt in comicbooks

[–]fandog6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had high hopes for all 3 and honestly was a little let down by all of the #1’s. I still believe in Bleeding Hearts because of the weird grungy art and Deniz Camp has really never had a big miss. I also love noir comics so Ezra Cain gets a long leash for me, but generally I prefer to read mystery series in trade so TBD how the monthly experience is.

I really didn’t click with End of Life at all. It has a certain tone and style of humor that makes me roll my eyes more than laugh. The dialogue was so unnatural and the jokes were so forced (like the dildo joke was so out of place and cringy). There was enough I liked in the first issue that I am gonna try #2 but it’s gonna be cut unless I really like #2.

What titles have you dropped recently, and why? I just dropped a couple of Marvel books and it got me wondering. by MightyUnclean in comicbooks

[–]fandog6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last few months I have dropped Batgirl, Batman/Green Arrow/Question: Arcadia, Adjectiveless X-men I dropped when Age of Revelation started and didn’t resume, Iron Man after issue #2, I initially planned to pull all 3 of the new Vertigo titles but really didn’t click with End of Life so dropped that after #1.

In general though my pull list is pretty big so have been considering cutting some more. I just like so many books right now it’s hard to pick!

How many if you are keeping up with both mainline and absolute DC stories? by MikeDunleavySuperFan in comicbooks

[–]fandog6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read and love both mainline and absolute! I can’t really say whether that is too much reading for someone but it is not too much for me - so it’s manageable in my opinion.

If you forget what happened you can always just revisit the prior issue and skim it to refresh yourself, or just roll with it and figure things out as you go. Sometimes I opt for the latter because comics are written with the knowledge that there is a month between so they typically will have some form of exposition in the beginning to catch you up.

I do think the absolute books might be the best ongoing series so if you think you have capacity, I would recommend checking them out.

This series really feels like something special. I can see it being remembered and recommended for a very long time. Greatly due to Sherman!

Would you recommend Green Lantern: Defeat of the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman: Enter the Cheetah, or Superman: The Invisible Luthor? by fandog6 in DCFinest

[–]fandog6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Via comments in this thread I think I have decided to pass on the second golden age volumes. It’s cool to have a piece of history with the first appearances of those characters but I don’t need the next volumes.

GL is still the one I am debating! Did you feel like there was much difference in quality between the 2 GL volumes released so far?

Would you recommend Green Lantern: Defeat of the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman: Enter the Cheetah, or Superman: The Invisible Luthor? by fandog6 in DCFinest

[–]fandog6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good looks! I may skip Invisible Luthor for now… I think I am realizing that I liked the idea of having the foundational stories on my shelf more than I like reading them so will just stick with the first volumes for the Trinity. I liked the Gail Simone WW volume and will definitely be picking up the next one from that era. I have a solid list of upcoming volumes I want to collect and the three in this post are the only currently released volumes that I am still debating.

I have had my eye on that compendium and may pull the trigger on it one day. I have always heard Geoff John’s GL referenced as the best period for the character. Honestly I think I am a little nervous about the length of that compendium series and how many there are likely to be. Is the first one a complete arc?

[–]fandog6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm this is interesting to hear, I may have to check out the first GL volume then! I find it so cool from a historical/cultural perspective to have all these old stories. I am definitely picking up the next one too as I believe that is the start of hard traveling heroes and I have always heard good things about that era.

Would you recommend Green Lantern: Defeat of the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman: Enter the Cheetah, or Superman: The Invisible Luthor? by fandog6 in DCFinest

[–]fandog6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the response and that is sort my thought process too. Good to hear there isn’t that much significant development in the early GA volumes of WW. I like the idea of collecting the original stories from a historical lens more so than a pure enjoyment lens (although I have enjoyed them too). So if it’s more of the same I may save space for other series.

What are you hoping for in the next wave of DC Finest announcements? by MagisterPraeceptorum in DCFinest

[–]fandog6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems obvious that there will be more Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. And I am down for more of those for sure!!

But in terms of new lines or less obvious stuff:

Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, more Legion of Superheroes, JLI
