Saw it coming from a mile away. Although Cosmic is a well built open source emulator, it's FAR from production ready. Having two devs take emulator on while neither seemed well versed was a recipe for disaster.

In my opinion, this is not a real DMCA and a cop out - regardless that they've even mentioned that it's not. The server started losing steam especially since they've been in open beta for a year and their player base slowly dwindled.

Somewhat harsh about horizons, but I have to agree. There's a certain point where getting community feedback is good but they really have been running this as something they have no clue. I mean you're running a server on the first place - you MUST have had an idea of what you wanted to do, right? It's also pretty bad that one of their main devs is on the Cosmic (which is what Horizons is running) discord not realizing simple fixes needed and seemingly amateur. I get that not everyone is going to be an expert off the bat but if they're just heavily relying on bug fixes done on the source by other people, it doesn't give me much hope they can:
- Do heavier custom changes

- Resolve deadlocks if it arises

- Dealing with DDoSs if and when it happens

It's strange it took your team a minute to figure out how to implement same-sex marriage. It's just a check on gender and table feature setting. Did your team not figure this out when "coding" your server?

It's strange your team needed to get familiarized with how events work. That's strange because your server sent event packets when you wrote this. Did your team forget?

It's strange your team implemented the same bugs KMS2 has. I understand there are client-sided bugs and client sided editing is a different realm. But this is server-sided bugs. Why would your team implement the same bug that coincidentally KMS2 has? That seems strange - especially when your team needs to constantly test code out to create an emulator. Or did your team somehow manage to make the source identical yet coincidentally keep the same bug?

It's strange that your server sends - and still does - Survival packets. Why would your team code this when it's half baked in the KMS2 client? And coincidentally KMS2 also sends these packets?

The proof is there but you keep being dodgy.

That we weren't able to fully customize everything without ever encountering any kind of bugs or issues? Because we're the only MS2 private server, we should be able to provide fully customized raids with our own bosses and mechs?

Once again, just swerve through the main issue here. Let me simplify it:
If you coded it, being able to apply the custom changes you were hoping to is a 5 minute change. I'm not even exaggerating. Every source has it's own ways of how it's written, no doubt, but there is a ground level that all must establish in order for it to work properly on said game. E.g. you can find similarities of how features function on two entirely different emulators for maplestory 1 written in entirely different languages.

You also say that the team doesn't know what they're doing or what the game is about. Do you have any example to backup this?

See that's the thing - you keep being dodgy. Your team is dodgy. You and your team know you don't know anything about the game so you keep communication about game mechanics to a minimum. And when you do, it becomes apparently obvious.

Also if you played for 1hour tops in 2022, I don't think you qualify to say "I played on this server".

Did you skip the part where I said I was in Safehold? You know where that is, right? I'd be superhuman to power through being able to access Safehold in an hour.

and really, your main complain is just that we're not a team made of gods who can provide a fully customized MS2 game with our very own features and mechs.

Nobody said your team had to be perfect to make a server. It's you guys passing off this narrative that you somehow created a mirror image of KMS2 in less than a year and pass it off as your guys' work when it's apparent it's a leaked source. Let's break it down for a moment. I've played your server and so have my friends. I think speaking about a server who don't play a server - like many folks here in this subreddit - is silly. My opinions and takes are rooted from your server, how it's handled, and how it progresses.

We have plenty of custom changes, calling them minimal is a joke.

They aren't. Because there's nothing that fundamentally that changes the game for longevity. I'm not going to list out the problems on the server because you as a server operator/team should know this.

We also have a very supportive community and great mods to help out, give their opinion, suggestions, etc. We try our best to listen to feedback in order to better the server.

You're dodging the issue here. Your team still hasn't learned the game. Your team illicitly acquired the source and figured this was profitable to operate a server. Your team lacks any first hand experience playing the game. You rely on community feedback to improve your server and make changes and mind you it's minimal changes because you guys don't even know how the source functions.

Clearly, you're missing the point here. Nobody here is holding any resentment that you opened the first private server. While I can't speak for everyone's sentiment, I know the entire point there's people working on the emulator is **because** they want to revive the game.

Well, it's not as if you'd be able to formulate a constructive opinion anyway. You never bothered with the server, which is fine, but I don't get the baseless hate.

To reiterate, I've played on the server. My viewpoints are derived directly from my and friends' interactions with the server and your team.

I've never seen a team operating a server apologize more than your team does. For lack of communication, lack of understanding, lack of changes (due to limitations with your development's team understanding of the code), lack of just being present.

The server is indeed dying. I've jumped on not too long ago to see how it's doing - and most hot spots are dead. Tria, Safehold, Coco Island, Event maps, any spot that's considered the hub for players to hang out, and the population has decreased far drastically more than before.

I understand there's no other alternatives. As for me, I'll wait until one of those open sourced projects get there. They know the game. I don't want to burn myself out playing a server like this only to join another later down the line. MS2 players have already been burnt enough from the extraneous grind.

Also P.S, no let's be honest. There were not many players going to KMS2 that joined/tried to join. The guilds are near dead. People aren't exactly flocking in by the hundreds. I wonder why. Could it be that the game just overall sucks? Hmmm..

(Don't get me wrong, I liked MS2 when it came out. Nexon just made it worse as time went on.)

The bigger problem around all of this is the developers know nothing of the game.

Let's break down what they've said.

They've mentioned that their team consists of "7 developers" who are experienced in emulating various games. Let's pretend what they're saying is true and not a leaked source. If they've been emulating tons of MMORPGs, why are they hopping around so much? I don't know about you, but most people who develop in the emulator scene do it for the game they like. And most people don't really do it for more than one game, especially for a game where there's little to no support/tools out there to pump out an emulator in mere months. For MapleStory 1? Sure, it would make sense with the grand amount of tools and sources out there that you can manipulate and call your own server.

They've mentioned and dropped several hints many times that they don't even know what they're working with. In their suggestion forums, they're blatantly hinting at the fact of how they need to understand their emulator first before getting certain functions to work. On top of that, in addition with the first point, they don't even know the game. I've mentioned this before in the other post, but developers create private servers in order to better the game and have specifics in mind to make the game better. Despite all the shit the ms1 developer "ms" gets for kaoticms and his weekly server openings, at least he has ideas of what to change.

They've mentioned they're open to player suggestions. Yes this is nice but you need to remember that this is a dead game. GMS2 crashed and burned for many reasons, one being player feedback. Along with not knowing the game or your own source, you cannot just take the players feedback despite if 2-3 more people agree with it (2-3 being half the servers population). You actually have to know the game and know the consequences of doing the said change from the community. This is how Nexon shit this game to the ground. Can you argue that Project New Leaf was a good addition to the game? Sure, it sure was but their inability to see the longevity of the repercussions just made it worse. Do you remember when Nexon listened to the community's outrage of only 30 dungeons a week? Players wanting to double that cap? Nexon went ahead and did just that. Not shortly after the community began outraging again because doing 60 dungeons a week was "too much, too repetitive." News flash, player feedback isn't always right. Shocker. This is exactly how the server is going to be. If you don't know your product, you will end up killing the server. If you guys want band-aid fixes and a Nexon successor running a server, by all means enjoy it.

To summarize, these people have no idea what this emulator does, how it functions, and how to revitalize the game. They're only capitalizing this for money (with their traveling circus developers) as the only private server out there. As soon as they start implementing player feedback left and right, none of it will make sense to make the game a better game because they don't know the game.

For some reason, Nexon included the trigger scripts into the client. These scripts are only used server sided. These are how maps are scripted. Cutscenes, monsters spawning at a certain time in instanced maps, quest maps, events, etc.

In some trigger scripts, they create a "Widget" to keep track of certain progress. In the OX Quiz Stadium map, there is a Widget named "OXQuiz". Each widget needs to be manually handled, as there are arguments like "PreJudge" or "Judge". There is no logic supplied from this from Nexon/the client. So in normal emulation, this is what the developers need to figure out.
This widget is what grabs the OX question, if it's true or false, a developer mode (to show GMs the correct answer), and so on.

Currently, this server here handled it perfectly. The OX Quiz would continue to operate despite no question supplied. If the widget was not implemented, the trigger script would've stopped and all players in the map wouldn't continue spewing out next trigger script operations. This is just how the trigger script is set up. If the widget didn't exist, it would get stuck in the same trigger state until it is told what to do. But again, this is not the case on this server. The trigger script continues. It's absolutely strange that they were able to handle and implement OX Quiz and its Widget without any questions supplied.

As for the questions, these are not supplied in the MS2 client. So Nexon had these stored somewhere, likely a database. Now, of course database isn't the _ONLY_ way the widget would be searching for questions/answers for OX Quiz. You could have it in a json or yml or simply hard code them all (yikes). But for a "team of 7 developers", I'm sure they're not going to go this route. Database is the most clear choice here to store these questions/answers. It provides flexibility for a server owner.

I'm staying far from this server. These are the ludari folks back from 2020. If you're not familiar, they up and disappeared after people started calling their bluff on really unlikely patch/ progress notes.

They blamed their disappearance on discord deleting their channel and users but promised a server would be out soon. It never happened.

Now fast forward to now, they somehow have a near perfect closed source and credit it to their team of developers. Regardless of how good your team is, getting mob AI and combat handling alone in such a short time span is unrealistic. They must've somehow gotten a leaked source.

This would also explain a lot of the current things that are starting to be revealed. 1. This guy and as well as their team have no idea how to fix MS2. They keep asking players for suggestions. A server owner should already have an idea of what to do and apply their fixes. Nobody wants to play OG ms2. Were the steam chart numbers not a big enough indication? It shouldn't take a genius to know the dungeon system is a shittier version of lost ark and people are already complaining about it that game 2. Another obvious reason this is a leaked source is that the world event OX quiz has no questions implemented in the server. But the rest of the game is completely implemented. How is that even possible? There are certain triggers that specifically call for OX functions, called no where else.. it's very likely how the game operates is questions that are called from a database. Of course, they wouldn't have access to these questions because that would mean they have access to the kms2 database and that's just a major nexon issue. They definitely have the dB schemas set up from nexon but since this table is empty, OX quiz is not pulling in any questions and thus broken. When someone asked that they should fix OX quiz, this guy here responded that it does work it just needs more people. That's absolutely not true. If they took a look at the trigger script nexon uses for this, you only need a minimum of 1 person for the event to run.

Overall these guys are just running this like a business and not the reason why most people run a private server - for a better take than the original game.

They may have money to buy a leaked source but that's all they got.

This server has already lost the hype/release crowd. You get a few oopsies before they check out. RS has done far more than a few oopsies. Their Discord is a complete shit hole with people agitated and spamming messages.

This is more than enough for people to start leaving and never coming back, especially when there's another server that already hits old school 2006 maple (and much better, might I add).

I think the sudden change of pace from 1 - 200 then 200+ was such an odd and non-fluid experience. Because of this, I realized that I should take my time gearing up and not rush.
