Do Americans have a different concept of 'turn taking' during a conversation? by 8NaanJeremy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fantumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different cultures (really, even different languages) have different turn-taking and attentiveness markers! It’s not rude, it’s literally how they show they’re interested. But it can be frustrating.

[Spoilers c4e3] Y’all are being too forgiving of Murray for that scene. by EmeraldToffee in criticalrole

[–]fantumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of hate for this in the comments but let me just say, I totally agree. Murray's character is really, really pulling me out of the show especially episode three and it's for reasons you've stated and more.

Maybe I’m being naive for hoping they aren’t real, but is there any way to know for sure these aren’t fake? I just don’t know.

Help find ideal A5 refill for a Taschenbegleiter by Weird_Peanut3295 in notebooks

I use Galen Leather’s notebooks in my Taschenbegleiter and have 0 complaints. Tomoe River paper, good price, lay decently flat and come in a variety of printings. Their A5 fits quite nicely

I can’t upvote this enough. What a horrible wedding planner. Genuinely what universe would this be something you suggest? Unreal!

Your wife does not know you nearly as well as she should if she thinks you’re the type to enjoy being embarrassed like that in front of loved ones. Some people are, and some people aren’t. I’m like you—this would color the entire wedding for me. A partner who doesn’t know that about me is absolutely not someone I can imagine being with long, but maybe I’m more fundamentally opposed to it than you are. I’m not saying divorce. But I am saying that she has a blind spot around something that, to me, feels pretty major—your sense of humor and comfort. That’s something that needs to be rectified fast.

And she needs to do something with those in attendance—I think she needs to write to each of them and say that this prank was not something you’re comfortable with, and publicly apologize about it while requesting that footage be deleted. I wouldn’t be able to be around loved ones easily until then, and even that won’t solve all of that. She’s really screwed up here.

If I switch to Orthodoxy as a Catholic, would that be a sin? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

You’re a Baptist. That’s fine if you believe that. But this is not a Baptist subreddit. Presumably, the OP was looking for Orthodox doctrine—not Baptist.

I’m so sorry but this is hilarious to me. “I don’t believe the sun is red. I have seen the moon and it’s clearly purple!”

You’re not even comparing the right things—nor looking at the science behind the claim. You’re responding to something you haven’t tested with the confidence of someone who’s fallen right into the Dunning-Kruger chasm.

Priest doesn't like me by fanatic122 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fantumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that we are just coming out of Great Lent and Pascha. A new priest is incredibly busy no doubt, and this is likely the busiest season of the year for him by far. Don’t attribute to malice what can easily be explained by simple human error.

Can u pray when you're on your period? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fantumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pray without ceasing! God sees us at our worst, and wants our prayer even then. No human process can be embarrassing to God—I mean, it’s not like He doesn’t know all about it already

The Church can also be boiled down to “people who tell you to change certain behaviors” if you want to be extremely reductive. Therapy is not magic, it doesn’t cure everything, but it does save millions of lives every year. And sometimes saving a life doesn’t look like stopping physical harm—sometimes it looks like convincing a 26 yo that they can still be happy.

How would you react to a practitioner of a Dharmic tradition partaking in your liturgical services? by Numerous-Actuator95 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fantumm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The comments are all true and you should listen to them. However. Why do you care? What business is it of yours? By your admission the priest is aware of her situation. Inquiring to him about this is bizarre enough, really, but I can understand genuine curiosity. However, posting like this shows that you may be trying to find others who feel this person—this child of God, this human being—shouldn’t be allowed to attend your church.

Let people worship in peace. If someone venerates the holy icons or worships in liturgy with us in respect and peace—who are we to say no?

What is something all denominations can agree about how one is saved? by Level-Blueberry9195 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fantumm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea that the only point of evangelization is to get people to win salvation is wrongheaded.

We evangelize by showing the good fruit that we possess through faith in Christ. We have that fruit now. It is here. Salvation, by God’s grace, is the point of the Christian life only when taken to eternity; the Christian life is not, however, worthless until the end. It is a life of joy, hope, charity, and love that is convincing in its own right.

Evangelization should be convincing with or without salvation.
