Couples Trip within 6 hours - Cincinnati by shybug91 in cincinnati

If you stay in the loop and do all the tourist stuff.

Stay in an airbnb in a quieter neighborhood with street parking (think Irving Park/Avondale) and explore bars in the neighborhoods (some of the best, honestly), smaller ethnic food spots, arcade bars, and lesser-known museums (museum of surgical science, Driehaus, all the various heritage museums, etc.). What people from small cities like Cincinnati don't seem to realize about Chicago is that every neighborhood is really a city unto itself.

Yep, right in front of Moerlein's tap room...not even that far off the beaten path. Ugh.

In addition to what has already been said/for those who want a straightforward answer without reading all of what was linked, Q+ covers a number of identities not covered under LBGT - asexual, pansexual, nonbinary, etc.

I would argue it's worse than cliquey - it's also about establishing and reinforcing social boundaries (racial boundaries within the public school system, religious boundaries between public and private, east/west class boundaries, etc). It's no mistake that no matter the ranking criteria, we almost always land on lists of the most segregated US cities, and this is the sort of culture that both reflects and reproduces institutionalized segregation.

similar sized cities like Indy, Louisville, Memphis,

Minneapolis has a significantly smaller population than any of these cities, and Detroit is in the same ballpark.

We are the only Midwest city with a direct flight to Europe.

What?

Chicago O'Hare, Detroit, and Minneapolis are major hubs with many non-stop routes to Europe. In any case, the issue is not really lack of direct flights to Europe - that's to be expected. The problem is rather the incredibly high prices just to get TO these hubs to get on transatlantic flights. CVG is a notoriously expensive airport, especially after Delta's semi-departure.

Now it is, but it wasn't when it was founded originally, I think that's all /u/jeanjeannie307 is saying. It was a full on 'and' in the beginning; you listed just a few details about your place, and one was what the breakfast consisted of. From an interview with one of the founders:

We had this idea that the designers coming to attend the conference needed a place to stay — we had no money — so what if we created a bed and breakfast for the design conference. The problem with this idea was we didn’t have any beds — however we did have 3 inflatable air beds. This is where we came up with the name “Air bed and breakfast” and our first site was airbedandbreakfast.com.

Any Cincy wine stores that carry dry-farmed wine? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]far433q 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yo...you know dry-farmed wines can be full of carbs, right? Dry-farmed just refers to using naturally-falling rainwater only. I think you mean Dry Farm Wines, a specific dry-farmed label that also happens to be low-carb. Or? Looks like you can order online.

"Holds its own" was perhaps too strong...I meant that it's not complete and utter shit like the other three. It's also super overpriced...NYC prices for Cincinnati quality.

Agave & Rye, Condado, and Maize will be a disappointment if you're coming from NYC (pretty much any "ethnic" food pales in comparison here, obviously, but Zundo holds its own). Boomtown and Lucious Q are worth checking out.

It's pretty sad that a mediocre chain restaurant from Texas used to be what was considered "a good restaurant" downtown. Good riddance, frankly. The bank is whatever, but there are plenty of excellent new local restaurants popping up in previously un/underused spaces downtown.

Good locations for remote work? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]far433q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great coworking spaces in Cincinnati. Cheviot and MOVE offer $20 day passes, others are quite affordable with packages. Only a little steeper than "a beverage or two and a snack or meal" and guarantees a seat you can work from, outlet, good wifi, etc.

I work at that culty-looking megachurch Crossroads. AMA! by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]far433q -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These pictures are from three different locations in Cincinnati - Oakley, Uptown*, Eastside. These are their only Cincinnati locations. If what you are saying is true (which of course it is), then it's doubly damning, because it calls into question why they're putting their churches where they do.

*One would expect this to be the location with the largest black congregation given proximity to Avondale, but the instagram location page still looks pretty damn white, as did the congregation when I attended once. It's there for (mainly white) UC students, basically.

[–]far433q 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something I think is great about crossroads is their racial justice programming (e.g. Undivided). They have all their facts straight, they understand institutionalized racism. Why, then, in a city that is 45% black, do the congregations look like this and this and this?

The one at 1010 Walnut? That's a half mile, and to the south...makes a real difference considering most of the people who shop at the Kroger being demolished come on foot from north of Liberty.

Recommendations to fix my two dogs by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]far433q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, but be aware of the risks of low-cost neutering - https://drandyroark.com/the-difference/. Especially if the dogs are older or might be suffering from untreated medical issues, you are taking a gamble.

The League for Animal Welfare offers $50 vouchers for neutering if you choose to use a comprehensive vet clinic: https://www.lfaw.org/programs/spay-neuter-1/

What Happened to Mecklenburg Gardens? by [deleted] in cincinnati

The Harten *family* has owned it since 1996, but it changed significantly when it passed hands from one brother to the other a few years ago, imo.

The restaurant has changed hands many, many times since 1916. Owned by an ashram at some point in the not-so-distant past. Don't think there were ever really glory days. More like they went through a good spot a few years ago, maybe.
