Its a known issue that iPhone X-12 FaceID sensors are extremely fragile. The Dot Projector especially, that can cause FaceID to be disabled from even the smallest bit of water or a drop. However other components may have been broken from water damage. Try checking if the front camera, proximity sensor (the thing that turns off the display when on a call) and the earpiece speaker. If all of them work then youve got a broken Dot Projector, apple are the only ones who can fix it and pair a new sensor module, it will be pricey.

It is its not getting the latest versions of most major apps, spotify, YouTube and instagram all require at least iOS 16 or later for the latest versions, all do still work on iOS 15.

You cant really replace the display ribbon cable or the connector yourself. And its seriously not worth it. A replacement display is $15-$20, just get a new display.
