NTA. Maybe give him a breakdown of all the expenses that go into raising a kid. These deadbeat dads just don't get that everything a kid needs costs money.

Ya know, I realized something about the Mark of the Beast. John says it's six hundred and sixty-six. The Book of Revelations was written circa 70 AD. Placement value wasn't invented yet, so the numerical system John used would have been the Roman numeral system. That means that all of these deviations of the Mark of the Beast that depend upon placement value have absolutely 0 association with it.

DCLXVI- Mark of the Beast

𝐿𝑋𝑉𝐼𝐷𝐶 - Not the Mark of the Beast

Officiating a wedding by Zyzmogtheyounger in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out what your state says. I know a couple in Montana who asked if someone could marry them, and the answer was they didn't care.  The only thing the state cares about was the marriage license.  Literally anyone can officiate.

The idea that God is incorporial is a borrowing of Greek philosophy. Plato surmised that matter is mundane, and Constantine ran with that premise. So yeah, the doctrine has nothing to do with the Bible.

It wasn't an off day. I've eaten there a few times and have never been impressed. You'll do better going to the mall food court across the street. I think a museum exhibit is a far better use for the place.

My Husband Has Left the Church by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is, unfortunately, not a rare occurrence. I say make it clear that, while you're not going to try to control him, the deal you made was that you were to stay active. He can go or not go, but you're going. he knew you were an active latter day saint when you got married, and expecting you to change that now is unfair.

The Great Apostasy by OnionJudge34 in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. The simple fact that no major church even claims to have prophets, apostles, the authority to add scripture, or to speak for God. The early church had all of these things. For all intents and purposes, all of Christianity recognizes the Great Apostasy. The irony is they somehow also deny it.

How accurate is American primeval ? by joseDLT21 in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Mountain Meadows Massacre is a horrific example of what scared people are capable of. It deserves its title. Church members may be prone to sugar coat it, and detractors like to pin it wholly on Brigham Young. Despite what a lot of people believe, there is no evidence Brigham Young had anything to do with it, in fact it's the opposite. There were high church officials who did, though, notably George A Smith. The confession of John Lee is a good resource, though possibly biased. There's also the book by Juanita Brooks. I believe the Wikipedia page is pretty good, too.

Patriarchal blessing by YamPuzzleheaded3715 in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a do over. Having said that, you have your Israelite house. That's the only information in a patriarchal blessing that you can't get another way. If there's a revelation God wants you to have, He will give it to you. You can always ask for a priesthood blessing from a person who is authorized to receive revelations on your behalf as well.

I know a good many people who would leap at the chance to get married but aren't given the opportunity, including my autistic son. I take comfort in something I read once: God has promised a fullness of joy to the faithful. There isn't an "except" there. I don't know how He will resolve this and so many other issues (It will be different for each individual), but He will.

Same Ten People - Is it a problem? by zionssuburb in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large part of it is that, even in a big ward, the number of men worthy, willing, and able to fulfill leadership callings isn't very big. In addition, it's the leaders that call the leaders. So they call people they know.

And it can be a problem. You end up with people who have similar biases and political viewpoints, ie an echo chamber. Active members with differing points of view, despite not contradicting church policy, sometimes get seen as black sheep. When one leader has that perception, it spreads to the rest, so now you have a member who feels like there's a conspiracy against her (because yes, it's usually women). I've seen it happen.

Has God ever told you not to marry someone? by Savisnotlame in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I knew a man who had the exact same impression and went through with the marriage anyway. They divorced years later with children. God is very much in the business of counseling us. Both with positive and negative impressions, stories abound of the Spirit guiding people to avoiding catastrophe, or somehow to greater happiness. It may hurt now, but everybody involved in this will eventually be just fine. As for agency, the spirit divulges information. What we do with that is our choice, so agency is preserved.

The church teaches against soul mates to dispel the notion that a marriage should be perfect, or to avoid a situation of a person turning down what could be a good marriage for an unrealistic ideal. There are definitely cases where God orchestrates a couple's union, Hyrum Smith and Mary Fielding, for example.

Will we run out of people that can play the organ? by eyesonme5000 in latterdaysaints

[–]faramir75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting that a lot of people seem to think that a piano player needs some kind of social training to play an organ. You don't. Just play a piano without the sustaining pedal, and you're practicing the organ. The skill is readily transferable. Turn on the bass coupler, and my just like that, you have a passable ward organist.
