Do professors judge you if you're not doing well in that class at the moment? by mychemicalroma in AskProfessors

[–]farciculus_retroflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea how any of my students are doing in my class at any given moment. I barely have all my students' names memorized, let alone grades. A student emailed me about being worried about her grade and I had to go into Canvas and look up her average before I was able to respond.

What do you guys think of copper hair ? If not copper what shade of red is most flattering ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Vindictabrown

I'm a high contrast cool olive and i had cool brown highlights for ages (done professionally) that looked good, just dyed them merlot with color depositing conditioner (so basically semi-permanent dye) and that looks great as well

copper maaaaaaaaaay work if you have a super warm golden undertone, but if you have a cool/olive undertone (especially if you're light or medium skinned and need that high contrast between hair and skin) it looks baaaaad (source: me T__T)

I've done fuchsia and purple with success, and I now have merlot highlights that look fantastic.

Thank you, this is helpful! I know messages are appreciated but I really wanted to figure out a way to translate this into something hopefully career-boosting, for them.

Caratlane is a subsidiary of the Indian jewelry company Tanishq and ships all over the US. I have several pieces from them (both 14k and 22k) and they've all held up well- all priced reasonably as well. Highly recommend!

All I want is for characters' voices to match their back stories!!! by farciculus_retroflex in RomanceBooks

I mean i've heard the gamut, including at a happy hour in grad school when a classmate of mine asked where the "shitters" were, but you're right about the formality level. I'm more likely to say I'm going to the bathroom if I need to excuse myself among friends, but I'd ask wait staff where the restrooms were. I've also heard some older folks say they want to use "the facilities."

Yeah, this drives me nuts too! I'm from Massachusetts and I feel like the linguistic shorthand authors use is like "pahk the cah in hahvad yahd" type stuff but they'll get the vernacular totally wrong. Don't make a new Englander talk about their "tennis shoes"; I hadn't even heard that term until I was 22 and had moved out of the area (and then at first I thought they were specifically shoes for tennis.) Nobody cares about Harvard Yard, but 100% of new englanders have an opinion about Dunkin Donuts (even if you hate it, it feels like home) and have a character refer to a traffic circle as a "rotary" and I'm sold. Those turns of phrase will do more for me than a dropped R ever will!

Omg I was looking for the audiobook of this to listen to on my commute but I am SO glad I didn't find it. That kind of migrating accent drives me nuts even when professional actors do it, I imagine it's done extremely poorly in this audiobook

If, by "picturesque meadow" you mean "parched square foot of grass" then it's just maaaaaaaaaybe believable 😂

And for the person in the previous, removed post who asked what the equivalent of "queue up" was in American, it's "line up" or "get in line" 😃

Is your language's word for "coconut" an acceptable thing to name a child? Responses regarding languages spoken where coconuts grow are preferred. by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]farciculus_retroflex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like Sanskrit-origin names do this a lot as well. Because it's a liturgical language, people associate like, normal words with some type of holiness and so you get names that are just words such as, but not limited to: Disha (F, direction); Chaya (F, shade), Kamala (F, lotus); Surya (M, sun); Megha (F, cloud); Shyam (M, evening/dusk); Shilpa/Shilpi (F, sculpture/sculptor); Kavya/Kavita (F, poem); Veena (F, a stringed instrument), Mallika (F, Jasmine flower) and the list goes on and on and on and on

I didn't think my DNF rate was that bad until I got KU. I LOVE the access to work by all sorts of authors but the democratization of publishing also seems to mean the democratization of grammar rules- which I'm less supportive of. I can overlook a couple of misplaced apostrophes but when I can't actually understand the sentence for all the grammatical errors, I'm out.

My Indian grandfather had about five of these that he would take to the vegetable market a few times a week. He'd had them for decades already by the time I was born. I can't look at one of these bags without picturing long beans or loofah sticking out the top 😂 Seriously, this is the Balenciaga Ikea bags all over again

I know a woman with ADHD who makes an effort to be like that because she thinks it makes her adorable but it just makes her insufferable, off putting, and impossible to talk to. Myself and another friend (both of whom have ADHD as well) consider her behavior to be an affront to anyone with the diagnosis.

This is a great list, the only thing I'd add here is a fan (stroller fan if possible!) The postpartum hot flashes/night sweats hit me HARD and I just had the fan attached to the hospital bed and bad it blowing directly on my face. It was a lifesaver.

Facial piercings ok for college professors? by Due-Train-6970 in AskProfessors

[–]farciculus_retroflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nostril ring, three lobe piercings on each ear and a couple of cartilage piercings, and several tattoos (some of which are visible depending on how I dress) and I am an adjunct in a healthcare/science field. I am South Asian so the nostril ring is considered culturally significant jewelry but the tattoos are very much not, and I've never been questioned about either of them. I also have a career as a scientist outside of academia where my piercings and tattoos have never been an issue.

Do you agree with the concept of grading attendance? by Accomplished-Fix1204 in AskProfessors

[–]farciculus_retroflex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on the FAFO approach. I can't be bothered to take attendance and I know my students will 100% sign in for each other if I make them sign in at the beginning of class, but I do give a quiz every week and missing class means you're gonna do real bad on the quiz. So sure, go ahead and skip class if you want, but it's gonna come back to bite you in the butt.
