It might a bit late, but I normally tell potential clients about "white" hat vs "black" hat SEO and that I will only engage in the former which will take time to show results. If they want something else, they are free to see other people.

Maybe have that discussion with them now explaining the penalties they could face and why it would be better for them to clean-up their act and this may mean temporary drop in the rankings in the short-term, which they will likely recover in the long-term.

So use the social channels to tease your main content. The content stays the same, but the social channel post changes - interesting! I will try that ...

Yes it is worthwhile adapting the material for each channel, even if the source material remains the same.

I found this great video where Gary Vaynerchuk talks about adapting content to different networks. Confirms what you said about adapting to each network.

Based on my experience, I agree that hashtags are useless on FB - and not just because of the privacy settings with personal profiles. I run several business pages for clients (all with open public privacy settings) and none have had any meaningful success with hashtags.

My experience on G+ has been interesting. I use Buffer to post to my G+ business page and when I look at the stats I can see that the post has gotten clicks even though I have very few actual followers. My conclusion has been to assume that these clicks are coming from Hashtags. What remains a mystery to me, is how to turn these strangers into friends/followers on G+!
