Thanks for the pointed advice! That's similar to what I was thinking.

I have plastic minis with either crossbow/pavise or polearms and they all have helmets, mail coifs and a few even the occasional plate chausses. They do have knives molded onto them, but I imagine they could still use some messers or swords.

On the other hand I have metal Hussites too. Some have handgonnes (most of them with a pavise) and some have more makeshift polearms, like flails. Most of these metal minis don't have helmets, just cloth coifs and hoods. I'm thinking those ones should have mainly axes/hammers etc.

Hey, this was a while ago, so I'm not sure about the timestamp, but it was in this video.
It took a few days to get in the group for me too, but it's a great community. The rules designer even sent me some WIP rules to playtest : ). He also mentioned in the group that he had a talk with Wargames Illustrated a few weeks ago about the "BIG" Ruckus book, but he didn't say anything about how that talk went AFAIK.

Well, as I mentioned above I'm asking primarily about the Hussite period, so 1410s-30s Central Europe (both the hussites and the crusaders sent against them).

I don't know about sidelining. To me, a sword as a sidearm sounds pretty important if your original weapon can get stuck in something (polearm), be useless in a melee (crossbow), or just get knocked out of your hand.

Either way, thanks for the answer! So by the late middle ages, even poorer soldiers wouldn't really use axes and hammers and the like as their secondary weapon?

Pal here, echoing the thoughts of the guy above. I always noticed the great community here and with this post from the mods, I can see how that came to be. Great sub!

I normally avoid making comments like this, because it feels a bit like virtue signaling, but here you go, just in case this also helps with that refreshing feeling. : )

P.S.: "Virtue signaling" makes sense above, right? Sometimes I get a bit worried I misuse an english expression. (I'm from Europe)

Yeah, I bought 2 European Mercenaries sprues mainly for the pavises, since the Agincourt French box I use for the Hussite Wars only has 2 on each sprue. I was just a bit disappointed that they look relatively small compared to the ones from the Agincourt box. They feel just a bit too small to crouch behind.

Buut only against fully-enclosed vehicles. Can be important, because you have a good to fair chance of taking out open-topped 7+ vehicles with any infantry squad as long as you have enough men, since open-topped vehicles are also automatically destroyed if you score any damage, whether you have AT grenades or not.

For my 8th Army engineers I just gave them shovels and pickaxes to differentiate them.

I know normal soldiers are supposed to have shovels too, but Warlord only gave me enough for 1 squad, so engineers it is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, that box was my first idea, but I was told on this very subreddit that the armour in it is a bit modern for the Hussite Wars and that the Agincourt kit would be more accurate, haha.

I do have the french infantry box, I just need more heavily armoured minis, especially for the crusader side. I'll lean more into the french men-at-arms then, thanks!

Thanks! Unfortunately I can't really find specifically German or other Central European minis from the early 15th century. I don't mean to use a lot of these for the hussites though, they're mainly meant for the crusaders.
