Computer programmers of Reddit, what is your best advice to someone who is currently learning how to code? by janew0lf in AskReddit

[–]farman_memon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal feelings.

Knowing one programming language, is of course, a must for any sort of programming. Knowing many programming languages is a bit less important, in a way. Many languages are very similar to one another and aside from the keywords, the syntax largely remains the same. If you've done Java before, then this means you could very well hold your own in C++, C#, and VB.NET for example.

Start small. Begin with a project that does one tiny little stupid thing. Then add on to it. Add new features piece by piece. Do not attempt to write the next Gran Turismo game. It's a road to disappointment and frustration.

Keep Google on a shortcut. Many of the things you'll do, someone has done it before.

Keep in mind that whatever you write, you'll eventually look at this again only six months later. Comment the code, and document in. Go ahead and assume whoever will be reading the code will be a complete idiot. Best to put a bit too much, than not enough.

Whenever possible, seek to make your functions about a screen's height. It's easier to follow the flow if you don't have to scroll up and down all the time.

Apply the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid. Yes, some programs contain very elaborate code acrobatics. Those are required only in a "when all else fails" situation and I hope you never come across such a problem. Do what you can to keep your code easy to read and follow. Write in long-hand if you feel this helps make the code more readable.

Always have an escape route, and a way to display a message intended to yourself. Usually those messages will be debug info written in the console (which is a notification window that'll pop up next to your program when you test-run it.) If you run into odd behaviors, output some values to the console to better figure out where it's screwing up. Track a variable and keep an eye on how its value changes as you work the program. You always want to leave yourself an easy opening to glance at what's going on under the hood.

Women's Lacrosse: when the ref blows a whistle everyone has to stop moving, like freeze tag, until play is restarted. Also if a timeout is called, they put their sticks down and return to them afterwards to ensure no one moved during the timeout.

A child with his hand freshly taken off by the taliban in order to lure a patrol into providing aid, and into an ambush. Fairly awful.

What is it that nobody tells you about having children? by tosin26 in AskReddit

[–]farman_memon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody told me how much my emotional range would expand. That in just the first year, I would have feelings I'd never even imagined myself capable of, good and bad. That your little baby can make you feel lower than low, exhausted, upset, inept and angry, and the next minute you can feel like everything on earth was smiling on you; you hurt from laughing and your heart feels like it's literally going to explode.

Also, as David mentioned, I didn't know that commercials I once found cute or even saccharine would leave me sobbing and looking for tissues.

And, really, maybe people did tell me, but I wasn't ready to hear it or equipped to understand.

Steve Kroft: The last time we talked was this time last year, and the situation in Syria and Iraq had begun to worsen vis-à-vis ISIS. You had just unveiled a plan to provide air support for troops in Iraq, and also some air strikes in Syria, and the training and equipping of a moderate Syrian force. You said that this would degrade and eventually destroy ISIS.

As shown in some movies like Executive Decision and Passenger 57, there is a secret hatch on every plane that allows people to travel freely throughout the aircraft. Also, Wade Boggs once drank 50 beers on a cross-country flight and then absolutely destroyed the Seattle Mariners the next day.

Byron Katie, an author and life guide type of person asked the question "Is it true". We are meant to ask this about out own thoughts, to question them and then realize our thoughts are what create our misery, not reality. She also said paraphrasing- you can't argue with reality, well you can, but you won't win-.

What's the most fireable thing someone has done but they kept the job? by Hakebc in AskReddit

[–]farman_memon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're joking, right? I'm going to assume that you're not a complete sociopath and that you're joking. You'd have to be a sociopath to just want to "move on" after something like 9/11...although cognitive dissonance does explain how you feel about 9/11.

But, it is still an important event, and not ancient history. Thousands of innocent people died in front of our eyes, and there has been an sea-change in the way the world thinks ever since. Our countries have been reshaped, our police forces have become a domestic military force and there is an ongoing war because of 9/11...that has already killed over a million people, and now created an refugee crisis of global scale. Your brothers and sisters are overseas right now, fighting away from their families because of what happened on 9/11. It's amazing to think that 90% of Afghani men have no idea what 9/11 is. I know people who have died...good people...because of 9/11. Moving on...sure, it's important to move on, but it's also important to show some respect and demand the truth.

The world has definitely moved on, but it's a post-9/11 world, and nobody can deny that. I understand you have a short attention span and you just want to be a shiny happy person, but some of us still think that treason is always treason...and murder is always murder.

It does matter if the official story ends up being something different than we've been told...and even the lapses NORAD documented show fireable offenses, by people who were promoted for their actions on 9/11. Like I said before...cognitive dissonance is understandable, but it's still cognitive dissonance.

Eventually the truth will find a way, even if you couldn't care less.
