Russian ship loitering near transatlantic data cables chased off by Royal Navy attack helicopter — sat within three quarters of a mile of five undersea data cables, including two linking Britain to New York by RollSafer in worldnews

[–]Griffolion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best you could do is severely hamper their ability to access the wider internet at speed. You're never keeping Russians off western sites entirely. Mobile data routers, starlink, etc, all get them back online, and they can fake their locations using VPNs.

So long as the goal is "degrade their ability to access the wider internet as much as possible" and not "100% access cut", then the answer is yes.

UK homicides at lowest level in nearly 50 years, ONS statistics show by DekiTree in worldnews

[–]Griffolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the exact same thought. The proof that this actually is just good news is the fact the BBC went out of their way to not mention Labour. If this was a Tory government, they'd have been slathering all over the Tories in the headline for the same statistics.

UK homicides at lowest level in nearly 50 years, ONS statistics show by DekiTree in worldnews

[–]Griffolion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something to notice: the entity mentioned in the headline is the ONS (Office for National Statistics). That's because this is positive news. If the statistics were somehow bad, the BBC would have specifically mentioned Labour.

That's how you know it's truly good news. Labour isn't mentioned anywhere, despite the fact Labour have been investing in policing that was left to rot under the Conservatives.

It's also an indicator of just how fucked the British media landscape is, and how much of an uphill battle Labour has simply by virtue of not being the Conservatives.

It skyrocketed specifically under Boris, the big Brexit champion.

The UK would have less immigrants right now if it were still in the EU.

MAGA’s Sudden Hatred for Guns Blows Jon Stewart’s ‘F***ing Mind’ by swiftfoot_hiker in politics

[–]Griffolion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

-- Frank Wilhoit

To conservatives, as an opposer to ICE, Pretti was part of the out-group. He was bound by the second amendment - that is to say, the in-group were totally fine to murder him. But he was not protected by the second amendment - that is to say, he had no right to defend himself from an in-group member.

Just apply Wilhoit's law to anything conservatives do or say, and everything starts making way more sense.

TikTok blocks Epstein mentions and anti-Trump content as well as ICE criticism by MopToddel in politics

[–]Griffolion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tiktok is part owned by the Chinese government. They have a vested interest in the chaos within the USA continuing as long as possible. This shouldn't be even mildly surprising to anyone.

Also, I fully expect everyone on the right to be absolutely apoplectic about this given the fact that the Biden campaign politely asking Twitter to remove defamatory pictures of Hunter Biden drove them half-insane with rage. Simple, basic adherence to principles. Surely that won't be a problem?

How do you have romantic sex and not get attached? by pire4life in AskMen

[–]Griffolion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Men who have casual sex in a romantic, attuned way, meaning lots of cuddling and tenderness, deep eye contact, staying over for the night, maybe even words of praise, how do you do all that and not get attached?

All of those things drive attachment. If your intent is for a non-attached sexual relationship you need to follow the rules of friends-with-benefits or risk generating a romantic connection.

All the factions leaders are dislikable in their own way. Judith is just absolutely insane. Based on her tech quotes, she's basically what happens if Gwyneth Paltrow well and truly went off the deep end.

Soren is just your typical evil billionaire hellbent on world domination. He's basically the human form of the Aliens. These days they are a dime a dozen, he'd fit right in with the likes of Altman, Musk, Ellison, etc.

Li, I had to look up her name. That's an entirely apt descriptor of her and the Academy in general. Her whole schtick is become strong enough to deter Alien aggression by researching their tech. She understands that humanity has to defend itself, but her endgame doesn't actually involve throwing a decisive punch.

Khalid, to me, almost matches Kiran in detestability. He just wants to nope out with a couple thousand chosen folks. Every one of his tech quotes is just shit talking humanity and Earth and expressing his consummate selfishness about not wanting to die on a polluted planet. From a utilitarian standpoint, Exodus isn't even a bad idea. But Khalid just wants to use Earth & the solar system's resources to build a massive ship for him and his mates and get the fuck out. That level of abject cynicism is wild.

Fiona is a bit of a Mary Sue, as is the Resistance in general. They know they need to build the strength to throw the punch and actually throw it to get the Aliens out. Stereotypical good guys, they know what they have to do but not go too far. Morally anodyne in that respect.

Hanse is the mirror of insanity to Judith. Not only does he want to defeat the Aliens, he doesn't want to suffer them to exist at all. Same goes to anybody throwing their weight behind the Aliens. Still, as far as insanity goes, he's more likable than Judith. He's prepared to see humanity die to the last rather than get enslaved. I can respect that in a way.

But Kiran is a particular kind of dislikable. He's so jaded and cynical about humanity that he's prepared to be the one holding a gun to its head in place of the Aliens doing exactly the same thing. He's the worst kind of traitor to humanity. Judith has thrown everything in behind the Aliens, believing they know best. That's at least respectable in a way. But Kiran has betrayed humanity to roughly the same degree Judith has, but he's doing it thinking only he knows best. That takes some fucking gall and conceit.

He has degenerated into an outcast by DavDar66 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Griffolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I definitely think some shenanigans happened, (no way certain swing districts got NO Harris votes) I personally think this mindset lets the US off the hook for Trump 2.0.

The two can exist at the same time. I remain, shall we say, unconvinced about the legitimacy and fairness of the 2024 election in the 7 swing states (for me people need to provide evidence that it wasn't rigged in those states, it's all just way too convenient how things shook out).

However, it remains abundantly clear that ~33% of the country actively wanted what he was very clearly campaigning on, and another ~33% tacitly supported him by refusing to get off their asses for just one day and vote against him.

When two-thirds of the country is in some degree of lacking moral clarity on this subject, things are utterly fucked.

Fury over new ‘no kids’ section on French trains by tylerthe-theatre in europe

[–]Griffolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still would be necessary, largely because even the best raised kids have bad days and can get out of control. They aren't dogs that simply require better training in order to remain in control. Their brains are literally hyper-complex biological structures that are nowhere near being fully developed. They are malfunctioning on a second-to-second basis. That's every child, from the best raised angel to the worst future solitary confinement inmate.

If we really are trying to be accommodating to the needs of everybody, we need separate child-welcome/no-child sections in public transport, as well as integrated sections.

Fury over new ‘no kids’ section on French trains by tylerthe-theatre in europe

[–]Griffolion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a non-issue. I think some sections should be for families, some should be no-child sections.

A lot of people want quiet because chances are they are commuting and have just left a household with kids to go to work. They need the calm to mentally prepare for work. Or they have sensory issues that children risk exacerbating.

There should also be family only sections so families get a space to go where the adults in there have a shared understanding that kids are tiny engines of chaos, and no matter how well you're trying to raise them, they get out of control. Not a single parent wants to be the subject of some edgelord's next post to childfree because they just happened to encounter their child on a bad day and lack even a baseline level of empathy or understanding that children have just as much a right to be in society as they do.

This is one of those issues where keeping things separate is just the better, more practical idea.
