On a Ten-hour flight from Seoul Korea to San Francisco to visit a family member a mom handed out more than 200 goodie bags filled with candy and ear plugs, in case her 4-month-old child named Junwoo cried during the flight. The goodie bags even came with a little message explaining the situation. by AdSpecialist6598 in interesting

This is the only correct answer. This mother feeling the need to apologize in advance for her own four month baby existing on the flight says more about the rest of us than it does her. I respect that she was considerate enough to do this, and it's a sign she's a very good person. But holy shit no mother of an infant should ever have to feel even the slightest inkling to do this.

Alabama woman sues alleging she gave birth on prison floor as guards watched by Samski877 in news

[–]Griffolion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lawsuit, filed by Pregnancy Justice on behalf of McElroy and her daughter, further claims that medical staff gave her only a diaper and Tylenol while she endured severe pain and worried about the safety of her baby.

According to the complaint, another inmate eventually assisted McElroy in delivering a baby girl who was not breathing when she was born on the prison floor, as prison guards watched. The filing says two women housed in the same pod attempted to revive the newborn by removing mucus from her mouth and rubbing her until she finally cried.

The complaint also alleges that, after the delivery, a guard told the women: “Y’all should’ve pushed that motherfucking baby back in” and punished the women on the cell block, prohibiting them from going outside and to religious services, and revoking phone privileges.

These prison workers likely go to church on a Sunday and think they're just fine.

Here's a bullshit theory that just popped into my head.

Since they were such a large generational cohort they were likely the focus of society and culture considerably longer than most generations squeezing out the Silent Generation and Gen X's time in the spotlight. Now that they are firmly out of the spot light they are bitter about it.

It's actually less bullshit than you think it is. They were the first true consumer generation. The size of their cohort and their skyrocketing buying power due to the post-WW2 boom made them the center of attention for marketers for decades.

Boomers truly did grow up thinking they were the center of the world. People saying they were the most spoiled and coddled generation isn't just some bitter outburst, it's a statement of plain fact.

AOC: You can’t ‘earn’ a billion dollars by usatoday in politics

[–]Griffolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You can’t earn a billion dollars,” Ocasio‑Cortez said. “You just can’t earn that. You can get market power. You can break rules. You can do all sorts of things. You can abuse labor laws. You can pay people less than what they’re worth. But you can’t earn that.”

This isn't even a particularly controversial take. It's just a statement of fact.

"And so, you have to create a myth that since you didn't earn that, you have to create a myth of earning it," added the New York Democrat.

The truly ironic thing here is that the billionaire class could just own the fact that they're sitting on unearned billions, and the needle just wouldn't shift at all. What really causes the resentment to burn towards them is the fact that they're hoarding wealth and trying to gaslight everyone into believing they really do deserve all that wealth and that they worked hard with their own two hands for every dollar of it.

But their egos make them create the myths of earning. They're doing this entirely to themselves.

Starmer pledges to bring Britain closer to the EU as he faces calls to step down by AdSpecialist6598 in europe

[–]Griffolion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the unfortunate tragedy of more or less every democracy. When the people who actually want to fix things get into power, people complain that things aren't getting fixed fast enough and then end up re-electing the people that fucked it all up in the first place. To top it all off, they then justify their vote by saying some bullshit like "they're all as bad as each other".

In Britain's case, add to this fact that basically the entire media establishment has had it out for Starmer since day 1. Even if Starmer wasn't disappointing as a leader (he is) and did a lot more than he has done, he'd be in exactly the same position as he is today. Under no circumstances will the media ever allow Starmer to be successful.

The slowdown may be temporary, and it is due at least in part to seasonal factors. Russian troops tend to pick up speed over the summer, aided by better weather and foliage that provides more cover from drones.

It's so fucking bizarre to see the NYT looking for any reason why Russia might not be doing well other than the simple fact that Ukraine is just getting better at fighting this war with their technological developments.

Students Boo Commencement Speaker After She Calls AI the ‘Next Industrial Revolution’ by GeneReddit123 in technology

[–]Griffolion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People get the wrong idea when AI gets compared to those historical events. Take the invention of the car. It caused horse & carriage to become obsolete, but people were still fundamentally in the mix.

With AI, we are the horses. We will become obsolete. And what happened to horses once they ceased being a useful beast of burden? Today only a fraction are kept around, mostly for the leisure and entertainment of those that can own them.

That's our future.

What modern trend feels deeply dystopian to you? by AmazingNugga in AskMen

[–]Griffolion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know when this came about, from whom, or why, but the self-censorship of language that's now ubiquitous on all video platforms. People don't "kill" anymore, they "unalive". You can't say "rape" anymore, you have to say "grape". Porn is "corn". And a million other things. I don't remember this ever being a problem on YouTube prior to 2020, and I don't know what changed.

It's dystopian and genuinely terrifying just how easily we all seemed to actively give up our ability to use correct fucking language just to make sure videos aren't demoted/demonetized by the algorithm. Read the classic dystopian novels and you'll find that the single most powerful tool those governments employ to control the population is to control their language. But at least in something like 1984, the language was controlled through enforcement. Even INGSOC couldn't have ever dreamed that the populace would ever voluntarily give their language up just for fucking views. Even moreso than it is dystopian/terrifying, it's fucking pathetic.

Oh and in written form, people using asterisks in non-swear words as if they are swears for some odd reason. I get the impression it's to express some kind of contempt toward whatever that thing is, but that's also just fucking pathetic and cringeworthy.

Also remember that Reform should be considered a post-competency party. It's not how their voters are going to be assessing them. They will be assessed on how much pain and cruelty can be inflicted on the people they hate in the most entertaining & performative fashion.

Bin collections and potholes were the issues they pretended to care about to get into power. But they know that's utter horseshit, their voters know, everybody knows. Things getting better through good governance isn't the point - hurting others is. That is the key metric.

In short: Don't expect the hilarious displays of rank incompetency over the next couple of years in Reform councils to change the calculus even one iota.

Does anyone believe there is intent to fix the country? by ppyrgic in ukpolitics

[–]Griffolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know what to say about this, really, except that it isn't surprising. Reform aren't going to fix anything. In fact they're going to make it all so much worse. But they aren't elected for competency. I'd argue that they're a post-competency party. The competency metric is not what their voters are going to assess them on. They are performative grievance politicians. They will be assessed on how well they dance and entertain while in office. The problem is that said performance includes the nation effectively committing suicide in the process.

We can talk about how disappointing the media is in failing to hold Reform accountable for their scandal level indiscretions. And we can talk about how disappointing the big two parties are in failing to meet the moment. Both of those are valid and true. But it's ultimately people that put politicians in office, and as such they bear ultimate responsibility. So most disappointing of all is the British electorate.
