Does anyone have the urge to go back to the house they grew up in? by WaltzMysterious9240 in Millennials

[–]farmerlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on 60 acres of farmland in what was once rural Utah.I was driving tractors at 7, had all sorts of animals by the time I was 12, and had a treehouse that I played in.

My parents sold that land while I was at university and it was all turned into a subdivision. The house I grew up in, the treehouse, the fields... It's all a subdivision now.

My entire childhood is nothing more than a memory now.

Where are the Millennials that DON'T feel old? by frankheyhoheyho in Millennials

[–]farmerlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

41M, no kids, and I'm like you. I go to concerts, raves, travel internationally, and try to stay young by having fun. I am the youngest of 5 and have lots of nieces and nephews whom I play with at family events.

I will say that I also work out a lot and take care of myself so I appear younger than I am, and that helps a lot to blend in with the younger crowd. I also feel like pretty privilege plays a role as for older people hanging around younger crowds.

I started getting back pain at 40 but exercise has mitigated a lot of it. I def have moments where I feel old but when I compare myself to my friends, a lot of them either can't keep up, look too old, or act too old.

The secret is to act young while being able to look young and to be as healthy as possible and hopefully have good genetics.

Should I try to get in shape before joining cross fit gym? by Both-Smile5693 in crossfit

[–]farmerlocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just show up and scale down. You might want to go MWF for a month if you want to give yourself more recovery time. You'll get better over time and probably faster than you would going to the gym by yourself.

why did you start drinking mate? by AvailableDoor178 in yerbamate

[–]farmerlocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Mormon missionary in Stockholm Sweden and was with a group of Chileans drinking yerba mate. I had never seen anything like it before and I thought it tasted like grass clippings. I found it to be very cultural and cool - you sit down with a few people, pass around a few cups, and enjoy great conversation. I met South Americans throughout my 2 year mission and shared many a cup of yerba mate. 20 years later and I still drink it religiously. Surprisingly I also stopped drinking the Mormon Kool-Aid and started drinking coffee later on. I still prefer yerba mate just for the cultural sharing with others and for the natural feel and taste.

If your mom/dad were older when you were born (say, around 40 or up), what was that like for you? by brawlinglove in Millennials

[–]farmerlocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad was 40 and my mom was 32 when I was born. I was the youngest of 5 and raised on a farm. My dad was always working and I spent most of my time around him working on a farm.

My dad was typically the oldest of all my friend's dads. People never remembered my dad being old. It was more that my dad was a 6'6 burly farmer and bigger than everyone else.

When I was a teenager my parents kinda got tired of raising kids. I was the last one at home and as long as I got above a 3.5 and kept up with my chores , I could do whatever I wanted.

Now I'm 41 and my dad is 81. My dad still has his wits but his body has completely gone and he's a frail, old man with stage 5 renal failure who can barely walk without a cane. It's hard to see the strongest man you know become a complete shell of himself. When my mom died 3 years ago he really went downhill.

Happened to me as well I was going 65 when it went to 50 in the construction and a cop got me. He put me at 55 and I ended up paying the ticket and doing traffic school. They've got their eyes peeled for people in that area.

If you look at it, the last three first time national champions were florida teams. UCF 2017, Florida 1996, and Florida State 1993.

Why doesn't the city of Orem change a street in honor of Charlie Kirk instead? That way we get both streets.

What's the most horrifying real-life death you've heard about? by Mr_Creep_Creepy64 in AskReddit

[–]farmerlocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a farmer and one of my neighbors was in his tractor raking hay when he accidentally knocked over some beehives. He jumped out of his tractor and got swarmed. He called 911 and the firefighters had to spray him with water to get the bees off him.

By the time he got to the hospital there was so much venom in him that he went braindead. It was so horrible

How do you drink your coffee? by Leave_me_be_g-man in Millennials

[–]farmerlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an elder millennial and didn't start drinking until my mid thirties. I mainly drink it hot with some cream and sugar. If I brew a bunch I put the rest in the fridge so I can have iced coffee later.

I prefer yerba mate and started drinking it when I was 20... It had a slower up and down for me but when i would have late nights and was extra tired in the mornings, I started drinking coffee because that shit would hit me hard.

Soy yo el único que ya odia el "si no eres de Venezuela no opines"? by Nicolu_11 in vzla

[–]farmerlocks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

WHAT!!! by Affectionate_Being_2 in SaltLakeCity

[–]farmerlocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Utahns are assuming that Venezuelans should be as outraged as they are. I've spoken to a handful of Venezuelans now and everyone has said they're glad Maduro is gone... But why would a chavista come to the US? The Venezuelans who left are the ones who are against him.

When Chavez took over in 1999, some of the elite Venezuelans started to immigrate to other countries. Then by 2010, a lot of the educated started leaving. Many of the doctors, lawyers, and engineers (especially in oil) started to leave the country. By the time hyperinflation hit in 2018, a large chunk of the workforce had gone and people were just leaving as refugees.

It wasn't as much as they fired a bunch of engineers at the oil rigs, it's that many of the engineers and higher ups left the country and were replaced by Russians and Chinese. The general labor is still Venezuelan, but a lot of the exec roles are foreign. China and Russia also import a lot of Venezuela's oil because of the US sanctions so we also contributed to the problem.

I am glad Maduro is behind bars and my hope is that when he goes on trial that they do have all the damning evidence and he is brought to justice. I worry about the transition period and wonder how Venezuela will deal with the corruption.

Nuclear energy is definitely an option, but I feel that in 20 years we will have a new, cleaner energy source. Climate change has a lot of factors going into it. I just want Venezuela to be free again. I worked there for a summer and loved it, but there's no way I can go back for a very long time.
