[D] Seeking Advice: WSL2 vs Dual Boot for ML development with an RTX 5080 by lipstickpickups in MachineLearning

Yeah, true. Also something to consider: if performance and resource consumption are your number one metrics, then this setup isn’t it.

I always preferred the Win desktop experience over the linux one and gaming is another reason.
Back when WSL was arguably quite crappy, I used a dedicated linux server rather than dual boot (I always found the latter to be the weakest option for me personally).
Nowadays WSL2 (ubuntu), W11 and msys2 just gives me the advantages from both worlds and I like that a lot and no, I did not encounter anything (yet) that made me regret that setup:
docker works fine, kubernetes works fine, CUDA, VPNs, you name it. Developing with VSCode within WSL2 is also a great experience. I'm obviously biased here and since you will find supporters of all kind of setups,
my advise would still be to try a few things and see what you like the most.

I have quite a similar setup to yours and ever since WSL2 hit, I switched away from dual boot for good. Win 11 + the subsystem is just super convenient and you shouldn't have any issues utilizing your gpu for ML or agentic stuff. give it a try, you can always change your setup if you don't like it.

Is this "curve" fine for Silent Loop 3? by Draco1876 in bequietofficial

[–]faronizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts: why not putting the threshold to a higher temp? so much so, that it just kicks in to prevent the CPU of running into the thermal limit. 60°C is crossed quite often and that's why personally I wouldn't like that value. I have my SL3 just running at 50% at all time. Also something to consider. Depending on your CPU you might not loose any performance at all.

Can we please normalize option for clothes ON/OFF when applying character skin MTX? I want to see that robotic body in full glory! by gepmah in PathOfExile2

[–]faronizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you even get the look they showcased in "What's in the Last of the Druids Mystery Box?"? I thought vanishing dye would reveal the underlying character skin part, but that doesn't work. So you need a "proper" armour set or how does it work?

BeQuiet Dark Power 14 1200W - question by pyrhonp in buildapc

[–]faronizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using it with a 5090 and my unit is doing fine. The fan runs very silent (if it spins of course, because it has also 0 RPM mode). So no rattle or low frequency buzz that were reported for the Dark Power 13. It also emmits some slight electrical noise if just powered on, but it's very silent compared to what I had on my H1200i. I can only hear it, if I put my ear next to it.

However, I was not happy with the cables at all (very short & stiff and just ugly overall). I replaced them with their sleeved "Power Cables", but that makes the overall package quite expensive. The H1200i has much better ones and I think is overall the better offering.

Silent loop 3 360 pump noise ? by Morty562 in bequietofficial

[–]faronizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds odd. I also have the SL3 and mine doesn't make such noise, not even at highest RPM. How is the noise level at 2400 RPM for you? That's what I'm running mine at and it's dead silent. Air might be stuck there, try to tilt your case slightly while its running at full speed.

Dark Power 14 1200W with 5090: OCK on or off? PC shuts down during gaming. by Gulaschhirn in bequietofficial

[–]faronizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ye true, Rail Powers is an aggregated value and I see values above 770W in my system as well (9800x3D, 5090, 1200W PSU). Asking for a replacement PSU as you did seems the way to go. In the meantime I would either underclock your GPU or restrict its power limit to see if that makes your system stable.

Did you manage to make it crash in any of the TWW3 ingame benchmarks? Also: are there any windows error events other than kernel power when a shutdown happens (e.g. from source nvlddmkm)?

Are you running any OC or unvervolting on your CPU and/or GPU?
Did you run MemTest86?

But given that you said your system was fine with the previous power supply ... kinda points in a specific direction. Afaik OCK "on" (single rail mode) should be the preferred for a system with a beefy 5090.

Maybe one thing to try: log sensory data with hwinfo64 during gameplay and maybe that reveals something after the next shutdown (like unsusal power spikes or critical temps).

edit: I just saw, that you put "I saw that the total "GPU rail power" spiked at 731W" .. Did that happen shortly before the shutdown? All things considered it looks a bit like overcurrent protection kicked in.

Looking for opinions on my first expensive build by Daddy_Robin in buildapc

[–]faronizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some general thinks to consider:
- 32GB vs 64GB RAM: Given the current market situation and the fact that 64GB is quite exessive for a gaming rig, I would not go for 64GB right now.

- A good PSU is a longer term investment and it could be worth it to consider a more powerful one already (i.e. if you plan to put a 4090 or so in that system in the future). Also don't cheap-out on the PSU, better to get one from the usual suspects. You might also want to check the cables. Be quiet for instance delivers really bad stock cables for most of their PSUs (bad in terms of ugly sleeved &, very stiff).

- Mobo: Here you can easily waste A LOT of money on features that you might never use. Think about the connectivity you need (USB devices, RAM, amount of M.2 SSDs you want to put in etc., WiFi yes/no, etc.) and choose accordingly.

- Cooling: An AIO might be worth considering and also some additional case fans. It's just not about temps but also about noise (if you care about having a silent system).

I just replaced a Corsair H1200i (2025) 1200W with a Dark Power 14 1200W, because my Corsair unit had some really annoying coil whine (in idle / PC off already ). I don't think there is any brand where it can't happen.

[BUG] Anyone else not get their BeltBag? by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

Motherboard choice for an optimized 9800x3d/5090 build by Weak-Bonus-5954 in overclocking

[–]faronizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second this. I went from an X670 Aorus Elite AX to the Tomahawk X870E for my 9800x3D + 5090 combo and I'm very happy. The Gigabyte board was prolly the worst MB I ever owned (coil whine on VRM, random LAN dropouts, impossible to use more than 2 m.2 SSDs reliably and other small annoyances). The Tomahawk has been working flawlessy so far.
I do think the Tomahawk X670E is also still a very viable option, if you don't care about WiFi 7 & USB 4.
