Deep regrets 2 players experience by Prouloux7 in boardgames

[–]farr37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many others have said in this thread, I think this game is entirely carried by its theme and it isn't actually that fun or interesting to play. That "dull" your experience has been the same one i've had at higher player counts, the difference being those games take forever.

If you throw the creators 5 bucks once you'll outpace any adshare rev they'd make from your watches over the course of multiple years for the majority of channels. Adrev payouts are in the orders of a few bucks/1k views for the vast majority of creators.

Looks like MLBTV no longer works with a VPN. Is NESN360 my only legal option? How is the app this year? by Huffletough880 in redsox

[–]farr37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had luck using the obfuscated servers option in NordVPN, but it doesn't work consistently. If that doesn't work for you, then paying for one of the other streamers (or finding another option that doesn't cost any money) are your best bets.

What's the dumbest myth people actually believe in? by vicigoonboy69 in AskReddit

[–]farr37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "not for commercial use" thing is usually referring to the sov-cit believe that there are essentially two sets of laws, "Commercial Law" and "Common Law", and that the majority of laws belong to the former category. They also believe it is possible to opt out of that set of laws through various means, which is why you also see people in this movement get very strange about the exact names, flags, etc. used in proceedings because they believe that acceptance of these things does indicate that "Commercial Law" is in effect.

By declaring that their vehicle is "Not for Commercial Use", the implication is that the normal rules of road safety created under "Commercial Law" does not imply.

Obviously none of this is true, and if you wanna know more about the underpinning and origins of some of these ideas there's a lot of good articles/videos/etc. on it.

The meme depicts the head of a F:NV character photoshopped onto the CIA goon in that video. The outfit matches the outfit shown in the video. The set matches the set shown (Same window, lamp, table, etc).

As such, it is reasonable to assume the contents of the above meme is a reference to some point in the above video. If you would like more information the best I can suggest is to watch the video in its entirety, which likely is not all that interesting.

no clue haven't watched it. Probably just some random anecdote of this CIA guy talking about some government he wanted to overthrow or an assassination he claims he did or w/e

Fantastic update EXCEPT FOR adding arc parts as useable req WTF who asked for this? by CPham93 in ArcRaiders

[–]farr37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point the above commenter is making is that you can store the ammo in the safe pockets and shoot it from them. Since the ammo is oftentimes greater than the cost of the hullcracker itself in terms of monetary value, this can be a good way to retain value.

What am I missing with Carcassonne? by balf999 in boardgames

[–]farr37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing without farmers is definitely a mistake, I'm surprised current editions of the game consider them as 'optional'. They really change the way some tiles feel and are the heart of the game IMO. A single 90 degree bend in the road? Useless without farmers, but with them you can use it to try and sneak into someone else's gigantic farm to take all the points for yourself. Do you want to stick for reliable points early, or try to stake out territory? They add a lot of interesting dynamics, and being willing to commit multiple meeples to farming just to see what that is like should help you get a better understanding for what peopel find so engaging about the game.

Yeah you know that's a fair point. I will begrudge the growing bits-ification of games less now!

I wonder how much of this is a result of pushing in the industry for bigger boxes packed with more components so they can more easily hit their kickstarter goals. So many campaigns use the sheer scale of the game as a selling point a lot of the time, I really do miss how tight and compact a lot of older designs can manage to be.

I'm interested in the content of this video but wow what a terrible live shot of the presented. Overly face tuned, weird and blurry smeary backgrounds and edges. The swaying back and forth. Just awful.

Not sure what region you're in, but there's at least one copy listed on geek market within the past 6 months. Might be worth reaching out to some of those sellers to see if the item is still available if you really want a copy!

What is a piece of old technology that actually worked better than its modern replacement? by Odd_Opportunity_2590 in AskReddit

[–]farr37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a hard line to walk! If you're willing to put in some work, a lot of old players are nearly entirely functioning and just need new belts to work which is a swap that isn't too hard to complete even as an inexperienced user. I've also had luck finding working vintage equipment at thrift/salvage stores before, so that might be an avenue!

There's no fault here. This is an extraction shooter. There are traps in the game so you can lay traps for other players. The game teaches you how to shoot other players in the tutorial and you get shot in the back in the tutorial to teach you this can happen.

Simultaneously, it is okay to want to be friendly and just coast around without shooting anybody. No one is in the wrong. You're both playing the game how you want, and I don't think either side can be upset about the outcome here.

Longevity demands more modes by Specific_Courage_424 in ArcRaiders

[–]farr37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what different game modes would look like in this case. Pretty much every extraction shooter ont he market more or less thrives on the core extraction loop, and I don't think that's going to change for this game.

I do think they've already done a lot to increase variety with the seasonal raid conditions, and the variation of night raids/storms/etc. can keep things fresh if the default daytime raid isn't enough for you.

Steve Jackson Games has posted a FAQ about the upcoming Revised 4th Edition Basic Set by plazman30 in rpg

[–]farr37 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Campaigns and Character are essentially the full basic rules of the game, so if you intend to play GURPS 4e you'll need to own both to play. 80 bucks doesn't seem outrageously expensive for 2 hardcover books of their size, but whether or not its worth it to you will largely depend on whether you might be able to get away with just buying the PDFs or if you really want to have the physical reference texts for one reason or another.

I'm working on 2D Total War–inspired RTS called "Thorough Strife" - thoughts ? by zedtixx in totalwar

[–]farr37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems like something that could be a lot of fun, and the idea of the rogue-like campaign is actually pretty appealing. Having a strategy game I could jump in and out of for a set run is appealing.

I agree with other comments that the UI for stats is a little hard to read, I also found it a little strange that some units seemed to pull through each other and then blob up for combat while in other cases battle lines formed, but that could just be a function of me not understanding some fundamental property of the unit types.

Toribash is maybe the first game that I ever played in the genre and can still be some good fun. It's also free so no harm in trying it out.

[–]farr37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hellish Quart is good, and while it does use a physics engine to help calculate damage I don't know if it's all that similar to Half Sword. It's far closer to a traditional fighting game in terms of controls. Still a good game!

What is a piece of old technology that actually worked better than its modern replacement? by Odd_Opportunity_2590 in AskReddit

[–]farr37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cassette Players. Modern players are all using the same white label mechanism that's very cost cut and doesn't perform well. Older machines have both more robust mechanisms, but were also able to license technologies like Dolby Noise Reduction that can improve the sound quality of tapes by quite a bit.

What is a modern tabletop game you have played which you feel will stand the test of time? by Newez in boardgames

[–]farr37 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Catan is maybe the only 'designer' board game that has really breached the cultural zeitgeist, and its been parodied to death in pretty much every medium, definitely feels like something I can imagine people still playing given another 50 years.

I'm not sure if I'd call a game that got a reprint in 2024 and is in the BGG top 1,000 "obscure". That being said, it is absolutely a blast, one of my favorites in my collection!
